Breaking news ... Molly will be featured on the NBC Nightly News show this evening. Check your listings for time. It should be around 5:30pm or 6:30pm but may be earlier or later in your area.

They did a nice story about her on Saturday but want to feature her this time with a follow-up showing her babies.

I love barn owls....I need to put up a box and see if I can get one to move in. There used to be an old house nearby and there were barn owls in the attic.

Alana, I bought a bunch of the Sunrise last year and only 2 came back for me. I wonder if it is a weak variety. This one is in the bed in front of the house and gets intense afernoon sun but big drinks of water with the soaker hose when I remember to turn it on. I don't have much love for that bed as I don't spend time out there. I'm trying to get it together out there though. Generally speaking, I don't document the ugly ducklings either but I do on Clematis. So many of them look cruddy for years on end until they grow up. Whenever I see something wonky with them I take a picture and save it in the "uh oh" files. It's helped with asking the experts over on the clem forum and then showing even newer newbies images of some of their common ailments. Thanks ptilda! I'm glad you like the pics. I love that Bradfords Beauty fern with the hosta. It is so big this year and makes an awesome backdrop to the mid size hosta. Fran, so pick my box. LOL! I posted the fern for you so you could be a little more tempted besides the moonlit masquerade dl. : P

I have a "garage forward" house, and perhaps what you don't like is the strong statement the stone makes but only halfway. So it's a pretty big contrast between the stone and the other side of the garage which makes a strong out of balance statement. I'd paint the house a color closer to the stone so there's much less contrast. Painted stone is like putting tinfoil on a turd, IMHO. You could also cover the stone with siding that matches the pillar or some other siding on the house. The problem with your house now is that the garage is looking way too prominent considering how pedestrian that part is, with the entrance receding into the background. That can be fixed with paint and landscaping. But if you have your heart set on a white house . . . I dunno, maybe cover the stone with stucco. I just think painted white stone is going to look cheap. Colorful front door will be a nice update too.

Oakley, if you can make cinnamon rolls, you can make bread. Cinnamon rolls are bread -- enriched and sweetened bread that actually takes a bit more effort and patience. And bread is baking -- is that different from cooking? Maybe a loaf of bread or some rolls would inspire a pot of soup (it's cold here) or something else to go with. Even a slice of buttered toast or a pb&j is better when the bread is homemade. But I won't push --- just be here if you are ready to try again and want some help or some congrats when done. Trailrunner, will have to try buttermilk in mac and cheese. I don't make it often, but I imagine that would be good. Yes to cornbread here too. My grandmother liked to drink buttermilk, but I grew up thinking it was just for cooking -- and a glass for her on occasion. Your berries and lemon curd look so nice. I made lemon curd with the last of our Meyer lemons. My French neighbor brought us some crepes, so we used our lemon curd and berries with them. And a little whipped cream cuz we had it. It would have been rude not to, right? LOL

Marilyn, according to the Backyard Barn Owl web site, barn owls are considered one of the world's most common bird. Yet few of us ever see one because of their nocturnal habits. I think I read somewhere that they are on every continent except Antarctica (and I don't blame them for that miss! LOL) I bet you have plenty in your area.

When I was a kid, I went camping in Northern California with a friend's family. As I was walking along the road, I found a beautiful adult barn owl dead on the ground. Its beauty was absolute perfection. I touched it and it was still warm, so it must have died moments before. There was no obvious sign of injury so I decided it must have flown into the power or telephone lines above and broken its neck. I've been captivated by these lovely raptors ever since.

Years ago we lived in an old house (built in 1881) that had a vent in the attic. It had screen on the inside, but somehow it got pushed out. A barn owl moved in and called our address home. I went to the attic one night to see how big of a mess we had, and it was clean as a pin. I had the kids hand me up a biggish card board box with hay in it. The owl lived with us for about 10 years. I would go up a couple of nights a year to renew the box and clean up any problems, but it was always nice and clean and the box was obviously well used (and slightly shredded :^). I will have to say that we never had a mouse or squirrel problem in our neighborhood!

I watched her for a little while and could see the eggs and a baby when she stood up. She makes such funny noises. Too cute.

Some people here might enjoy the book "Wesley the Owl" written by a woman who raised a barn owl. He was her pet for something like 18 years. (O'Brien is the author.)

There is even an owl movie coming out: "Legend of the Guardians."

Thanks for the link to the owl and her owlets. Very interesting.

I haven't seen it yet. It's 7:40pm and I'm still at the office. Had hubby run home and set the Tivo. Can't wait to see it.

It's the night vision camera. In real life it's pitch black in there right now at 9:30pm.
