The thread about the now famous couple who ended up on the cover of the Woodstock album got me to thinking about another famous candid photo of a couple.

Tomorrow is the anniversary of the event when 2 million people gathered in Times Square to watch for the official announcment of the Japanese surrender. One of the most famous photographs ever published by Life, VÂJ day in Times Square was shot in Times Square on August 14, 1945.

One sailor went around kissing girls and one shot of him kissing a nurse has been immortalized appearing on the cover of Life magazine and in news stories. Years later the photo was manufactured as poster art.

The historic gathering is re-enacted on the anniversary day by people. No event scheduled this year though. There is one for 2010 celebrating the 65th anniversary.

Various people over the decades have claimed to be the sailor/nurse in the photo. Some people claim to be witness to the photo and say it was posed and not spontaneous. Some witnesses say the nurse screamed and slapped him after he grabbed her and forced a kiss on her.

Who are these poeple in the photo? We will never know.
