yes, they still do it, it's called ECT. It's usually only used for very, very severe depression and I've actually seen it work pretty well. It's much improved from the "old days", although it still seems barbaric to me, in theory.

I used to work with a older lady who got it whenever she was in the depressive phase of her bipolar disorder. But, she was really bad off, wouldn't get out of bed at all, etc. After ECT she usually slept for the day, but then would wake up the next day in a miraculously good mood. It would usually help for a few weeks, and then she would have to go back.

ECT still has a lot of negatives though. People have to wear diapers while getting it because they often lose their urine/bowels, and it makes them very confused and forgetful for awhile after the treatment.

I'm shocked though that someone would still be "sentenced" to ECT as a punishment. It's generally just used as another form of mental health treatment, like medications or anything else, and done WITH consent. I can't believe someone would be forced to undergo shock therapy for committing a crime! That's really messed up.

I don't know anout Missouri, but here the junk yard guy could be charged with possession of stolen goods.

I'd sure like to see the article you quoted from. Do you have a link? I googled, and read at least 10. None of them mentioned shock treatment.

I believe what they meant was to "shock" the man back into good behaviour. If he doesn't show repentance and remorse after 120 days, then he would spend 5 years in prison.

Jails and prisons would never be allowed to administer Electro-Convulsive Therapy. They don't have either the equipment or the personnel to administer it or care for patients following treatment.

I was just reading comments there and found this which explains what the "shock treatment" means.
Shock Probation is when a judge lets them out of jail early and is supposed to be used on first time offenders. The shock is learning what life in jail is like. By releasing them early, it is hoped that they won't want to go back. I guess if he screws up again once he is out - he will then serve the full 10 years.

I haven't read eveything, but don't I think term "shock treatment" used for this story is the kind used for severe depression (which they still do do). I think it's just the "shock treatment" of being thrown in jail to try to shock you into realizing what you did was so stupid and hopefully you'll come to the conclusion to get out of the crime industry.

Although, it's an expensive thing to replace, theorectically he probably had no clue what he was doing was so damaging. And, if it was his first offense and since I'm guessing no people were hurt or involved, etc... they'd probably go easy on him.

My BIL was very depressed a few years ago, my sister thought he was going to kill the both of them. He got EST electro shock treatment and has been fine ever since. I know it's still a recognized treatment for some mental disorders.
