This is Trisha Yearwood's cast iron skillet almond shortcake.

Well, that depends on where your dad lives ... or, to be more accurate, where the plants were living. If they were growing outdoors in zone 6 or 7, and haven't become accustomed to indoor heat and light conditions, they should be fine if you plant them out now. Just be sure your soil is not too wet to be worked. If a clump of moist soil crumbles easily in your hand, go ahead; if it forms a clump, wait until it dries out a bit, otherwise working it now is likely to cause compaction.

is this a trailer or modular home so you have to go to the furnace to switch it to cooling and fan? If so your programable stat will not work on that system. You would have to run new 4 wire and do a lot of rewiring at the furnace. Later Paulbm

Touching up paint on walls??

A couple of thoughts: 1. Most walls are rolled. If you used a brush for your touch up, it's very difficult to hide the brush marks because the texture is different. 2. Unless the paint you're touching up is fairly new the old paint may have faded slightly and there's probably some dirt on the surface. 3. The number of coats and the color of those coats can have an effect. Imgaine this. You have a bright red wall and you put on one coat of white. You'll likely end up with a pink wall. Put on another coat of white and maybe you have a wall that appears white but actually has a pinkish hue (that you may not have noticed). Now when you touch up you essentially add a third coat. Nothing has changed about the paint per se but rather than you've covered up more of the red. So the freshly painted area appears more "white". Touching up an existing wall can be very tricky. You might be better off painting the whole thing. Mike

Our house is over 90 years old. We still have the old-fashioned removable wooden storm sash and screens. Since DH keeps them well-maintained, and since wood and a 3" airspace are about the best insulation you're going to get, yes, our house is very cozy in winter. Of course, we're not interested in it being totally airtight--that's not good for the house (causes condensation and rot), nor healthy for the inhabitants (that's when you get radon build-up, among other issues), so we do make sure the house is breathing some, even in winter. The country house is only from the 50's. But it's got hot water heat, which of course, feels much warmer--we keep it at 55-58, and it's very comfortable at that temperature.

Glenda, your shortcake looks yummy. It is a recipe that I would love to try. Is it usually served "as is," or with ice cream or another "add on?"

Skillet Almond Shortbread

Ingredients

1ÃÂ½ cups plus 1 tablespoons sugar (for topping)**eyeball it

ÃÂ¾ cup (1ÃÂ½ sticks) butter, melted

2 large eggs

1ÃÂ½ cups all-purpose flour

ÃÂ½ teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon almond extract ***used vanilla

ÃÂ½ cup sliced almonds with skins ***use a knife to gently swirl the almonds into the top of the batter. They stick better that way

Preparation

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Line a 10-inch cast-iron skillet with aluminum foil and spray the foil with nonstick cooking spray.

In a large mixing bowl, mix together the eggs and 1ÃÂ½ cups sugar, then add the melted butter and almond extract to the mixture. Sift the flour and salt into the batter and pour the batter into the prepared skillet. Top with the sliced almonds and the remaining 1 tablespoons of sugar. Bake until slightly brown on top, about 35 minutes. Cool the shortbread in the skillet. Let it cool a bit then use the foil to lift the shortbread from the skillet. Remove the foil and slice up for serving. The end product is creamy while warm, but firms up for a chewy inside and crisp outside when cooled - delicious either way.
