do you have black kitchen appliances? a cleaning question!

Here's a link to a kichen over on the kitchen forum. It's not mine, but it does show an oven that has a black front, like mine does (I believe it was builder-installed when the townhouse was built, in the mid-'80s).

What do you use to clean the black oven front without leaving streaks? Even glass cleaner seems to leave streaks.

Many commercial glass cleaners add a coloring agent or perfume to their product which I think increases the chances of streaks. Someone on this forum works at a framing shop and she recommended Sprayway. I can buy it at my supermarket.

I used to use a glass cleaning solution that I made from a Consumer Reports article.

for a quart bottle you'll need:
1/2 cup (4 oz.) rubbing alcohol
2 tablespoons sudsy ammonia
1/2 teaspoon hand dishwashing liquid
4 cups (1 quart) water

However now that I have granite counters I just use the cleaning solution I use on them. They both work equally well. I don't have streaks on my black glass voen or microwave.

1 quart spray bottle
1/4 cup isopropyl rubbing alcohol
1 teaspoon hand dishwashing detergent
add water to fill the bottle.

I use plain rubbing alcohol.

If you can find it near you (or order online): 3M's SS Cleaner and Polish aerosol spray works well (thank you once again to rococogurl for the suggestion--we also use it on our KA fridge). Spray it on a cloth or micro fiber cloth, wipe on (covering all SS surfaces), and then buff in/off with dry part of the cloth, or a fresh cloth. It's approved by the NSF as being safe to use around food, and I use it on my SS sink a few times a week to repel or cut down on water spotting. For scrubbing off "gook" and cooked on food, you can use some BKF (Bar Keepers Friend) on a blue scrub sponge, and then remove powdery residue with wet/damp sponge or paper towel, and then follow up with the SS spray.

First of all, in my opinion, black appliances + stainless hood would look just fine. Secondly, many stainless steel ranges have as much black showing as stainless. I think they would marry the two colors of the other appliances quite well: Finally, I think your idea (SS range+hood, black ref. + DW) would also look just fine!

I love black appliances and I did have a mix of SS and black for about 3 weeks and did not mind it at all. In fact, I kind of liked it. My stainless steel solid surface electric cooktop is, of course, black and the sides of stainless fridge are black, my built-in microwave was black. The dishwasher was black. Dishwasher went out during our upgrade of countertop and backsplash, so that was easy to move to stainless and as fate would have it, three weeks after the upgrade was complete, the microwave went out and we replaced it with stainless and I had no aversion to going to a mix for the long haul, but as it worked out it was a short haul. Personally, I prefer black over stainless just as I like other surfaces better than granite, but sometimes the man writing the check gets to pick some of the stuff. I also did not like the black sink when I had it in another house in another life, and in this house even with the black appliances, we immediately changed to a stainless sink (which we had done in the former house) as well. I think black and stainless are a good mix and match whereas some colors just do not do that well. Red, I love that Halcyon color and it will give your beautiful red kitchen a new look. (You have such great taste and that tile is to die for). I loved my red kitchen too but now I am loving my dry sage kitchen just as well. I am sure one day I will tire of that and perhaps, if and when that happens, I can find a pretty wheat color that I will fall in love with.

I tried alot of different products with not much success. I really sorta hated my new stainless appliances...I'm not one to do a great deal of cleaning so I couldn't believe the maintenance with these darn things. Anyway, I think it is important on these threads to mention the brand of appliances you have. Even though it's all stainless steel, I do think they are different. I have all GE Profile appliances. The product that has worked best for me is the Weiman spray. I get it at Wal Mart. Spray it on a cloth and wipe. And I agree with Boxerpups, the Weiman SS wipes do not work as well. Unfortunately, you are probably going to have to try a few products till you find the one that works best for YOUR appliances.

Mair, does your granite cleaner have to be rinsed off? I am trying to find one that can be sprayed on, wiped off (like with a cloth or paper towel)and leaves the granite shiny. My dark green granite (Verde Peacock, I think)often seems to have a haze on it.

My range is black (I would not get that again), and I have a special cooktop cleaner for it. It works on the front of the oven door, too.

I have a black range hood/fan. I clean it with Lemon Pledge cloths. Leave a nice shine and smell good.

I have several black appliances, including a large sub-zero fridge with a black front.

I use Lysol spray kitchen cleaner, and wipe with a clean microfiber cloth.

dedtired - I just spray on the granite cleaner and wipe with a paper towel. It's important to use a neutral cleaner with natural stone granite and I got this recipe from my granite supplier. It's what they use for everyday cleaning. I did buy an aerosol product from him that I use when I want a real shine. It's Bellinzoni Maintenance Daily Cleaner & Polisher for use on marble, granite & quartz. It's a spray foam that you just spray on and then use a soft, clean cloth to wipe. It does leave a real shine.

My granite's been in since 2005 and it still doesn't need to be resealed. Using a neutral cleaner doesn't strip off the sealer.

I've been careful to use a cleaner for granite, but haven't been happy with them. I'll try your "magic potion".
