Not a peppermint person!

ICE was one of my favorites. Only place I could find it was Fred's, but it's gone from my area.

Next to ICE I enjoy butterscotch flavored hard candy.

Lemonheads, Red Hots and Fireballs.

Not sure they are technically 'hard' candies but I love them. But my favorite is Gummy Bears and Sour Bears. I'll eat them until I'm sick. We may be in old bodies, but we never really grow up. LOL

I don't like hard candy, really - never have. I'll occasionally have a peppermint (maybe at Christmas).

Great pics from floota, as usual. But gardenfanatic, the fact that floota can grow those daylilies with such perfection doesn't mean that you can. Or me. :) Of the three, I have only PRECIOUS CANDY. I had it directly from the Stamiles, as a new intro, and it's never wowed me much, except during its first summer here. Second summer, it was pure muddy mauve. Third summer, pretty much ditto. When did I get it? I don't recall, but last summer, the color was very pretty. Very, very pretty in fact, and coming semi-close to images I've seen. Only problem....it was very pretty on all two of its blooms. floota lives far southier than I do, so that could make the difference (even though I have PRECIOUS CANDY in a bed fronting a stucco wall of the house and close to a very large stone patio -- attempt to give it a warm microclimate). Now, maybe its me and my skill (or lack thereof) with daylilies, but gardenfanatic, maybe you want to try to see all three Candies in gardens in your area before ordering any of them? Or at least ID growers in your area who sell them, which would suggest they increase enough to be able to be sold. Or, you could do what I've done....I have both the SPECIAL CANDY and SHERRY CANDY look in other daylilies. Interesting now that the subject's come up, they are all from the same, northern hybridizer -- Darlyn Wilkinson, of Massachusetts. I have her GREYWOODS COUNTRY SQUIRE, not exactly like SPECIAL CANDY of course, but for me, for now, close enough. And instead of SHERRY CANDY, I have GREYWOODS CHASIN' THE BLUES and GREYWOODS GIDDY UP GIRL, and they are just gorgeous here, not to mention, vigorous. GREYWOODS COUNTRY SQUIRE much less vigorous, but it might have to do with where I'd first sited it here, rather than anything inherent in the plant. I wasn't trying to get northern versions of the Candies when I ordered those -- but I guess I do like the look a lot. :)

Fruitcake candied fruit --- do you make your own.

I recently made fruitcake out of dried fruit too. I used some of our dried figs and dried apricots. I forgot one should use candied. I did use our candied citrus rind though. Other ingredients included currants, yellow raisins, cranberries, prunes, crushed hazelnuts, and marzipan paste. Brandy too of course. I sent a large fruitcake to a party and none came back, so I have to assume it was good (I know, I should have gone to the party...). I have a couple more soaking in the brandy cheesecloth, will taste them closer to Christmas. It smells so wonderful I really doubt it will taste bad.... I am posting to give the approximate recipe for the syrup and candied rind, since i have been using them quite a bit. To make the syrup and candied rind here is what I did. Mix equal parts sugar and water, heat until sugar is dissolved, and put the zested rinds of a basket full of minneolas after carefully washing them. Sorry, i did not measure, but you will see when enough is enough, when the mix turns a pretty orange color and you see lots or rind on the syrup. Boil for about 30 minutes and let the whole thing sit overnight or a few hours. Strain the rind and keep them in a separate container. The strained liquid should be orange and taste like minneolas. Or, any citrus that you want to preserve. My oldest (and most productive) trees are a giant Minneola, which is probably over 100 years old, and a not so large looking but incredibly prolific Meyers lemon tree. Both of them are super loaded (again). I am thinking about a similar Myers syrup and candied rind combination. I have used the syrup as a flavoring in citrus wine, to make the zucchini candies that were posted here, as a mixer with vodka, will use to soak the non- brandy cheesecake....and that will be it (not much left so it will be gone after that). The candied rind is used every time I make zucchini muffins, every time I make fig bread, and I used some in the fruitcake.

All good choices. Shade Fanfare is an old one, and for years I wasn't too enamoured of the yellow-green center, cream-white margins look... but I've grown to appreciate a few in this color combo and Shade Fanfare is one of the old dependables. Nice inexpensive hosta. Praying Hands - I've always grown mine in the ground, but it is in a location that sets if off. I know it has gotten into a "grow it in a pot" recommendation pattern... but it grows fine in the ground as well. The container idea is just to show off what is already a somewhat odd form. I like it a lot - not just as a novelty but as a neat kind of hosta that I hope will generate some more - maybe larger, maybe all yellow, etc. Blue Mouse Ears deserves a spot in every hosta collection... it is something of a phenomenon... I'd never call it a mini as it will reasonably quickly grow into a nice small-hosta clump... I quit collecting two years ago, so I missed the Wheee surge - but I think it might be a real keeper and I may have to add it. (Gardens are full and over-full, so Rule is that I have to delete two hostas from my garden for every one I add... )

Where are all our Canadian friends????? My Goodness, the BEST candy bar in the world is a Mars bar. Not a USA one. I think I kept three of them in my fridge, eating one per year, after our trip to Alaska, thru BC and the Yukon. Sadly, they are gone, but the memory lingers on! Chocolate as only the 'blokes' make, with caramel....just heavenly. Good thing I live a long way 'south of the border'! Meanwhile...... Chocolate is my fav.... coffee second, like TJ's Coffee Rio.

My DH is addicted to Werthers. I hardly ever have a hard candy, but if I were to choose, it would be Cherry lifesavers.

BD (before diabetes) orange lifesavers were my favourite. Just enough tang to them. Didn't have too many of them though.

Love horehound candy and those wonderful gin gins, made from ginger. Hard ginger candies can be extremely helpful for someone with a queasy stomach.

My favorite is Ice Blue Mint Coolers by Brachs. I can't find them in the stores anymore, so I order them online from candyfavorites.com

I keep them in both vehicles, plus in a candy dish on each level of the house.

Home made hard tack in the spice flavors. Clove is my favorite, then cinnamon and ginger. Like the mints too, cool mint and spearmint are good, peppermint ok. Almost forgot...sassafras and rootbeer, love them. Have never been a fan of the fruit flavored hard candy.

Wanda, that's the one I love! Knew it has ICE in the name.

I had some in the freezer and pulled them out, and used them up with the cold I have. Hacking cough! Now I have no more :o(

Use to love butter rum lifesavers can't find them around here anymore. I like just about any hard candy as long as it isn't real sour.

I used to love those ones that are wrapped like a strawberry, and have a soft middle filled with jam. I had one recently and it was so sweet I nearly croaked. I remember them being more tangy.

Have you ever seen those really small ones that are wrapped in mylar, and are flavoured with anise (Ouzo) and Cinnamon? I love those. I also love to watch the faces of people that assume they are mints, then get a mouthful of black licorice flavour ROFLMAO! I happen to love that flavour but I know most people hate it.

I don't eat hard candy very often though, as it blisters my tongue. If I would let it just sit in my mouth and melt I would be fine, but I can't do that!

I used to keep Jolly Rancher watermelon flavored hard candies around. But I stopped for the sake of my teeth - I tended to chew them and would give myself a headache by the end of the day.

Yes susanjf.....definitely NIPS!! I like both flavors but the caramel is my favorite. Buy them 6 boxes at a time to make sure I don't get caught without them.

The ones with chocolate in the middle - butterscotch or butterrum on the outside maybe?

otherwise anything dark chocolate. Do the Lindor Truffle balls count?

Ooooh - remember those life safer booklets? We used to get them every year in our stocking for christmas. It had assorted rolls, and wild cherry, butter rum, mandarine orange, I know there were more. We LOVED those things. Saw them a couple of years ago and wanted to get one for DD's stocking - and there were FOUR rolls in there, all assorted. What the heck??

We used to crunch the mint ones in the dark trying to make sparks ROFL!

Life savers and lemon flavored candy. There used to be a hard candy called Napolean Bonbons. They had a very sour powder in the center of them. They were in lemon, but also other flavors could sometimes be found. Those were my very favorite hard candy.

Can't believe you coffee lovers haven't discovered Trader Joe's "Coffee Rio". May not be "TJ's" but that is the only place I have found them. Best "cuppa" in town.

Yep. lifesavers are still around. Those are available in both hard and gummy soft. What I haven't seen lately is the little compact rolls of lifesavers. What the local stores stock are bags of lifesvers and these candies are a bit larger than the ones packaged in rolls.
