We are also on the 'do not call list' we get several calls a day. We screen every call now!

I would never buy anything from a telemarketer, or from a person door to door, on a street corner or in a parking lot. leave me alone, do not even look at me!

Never. I only hung up afer saying, No. Thank you. I didn't want to waste their time so they could move on to someone who might say yes? You'd be amazed how many hung up on me before I can say, thank you.

Now, I have a cell, no landline. And I won't give out my cell phone number, I say it's unlisted. Wich is something people nowadays do not understand. Privacy is my right.

I even get them on the cell phone and no one has that number, I think att sells their lists.
I hang up if I do answer but generally I don't answer. Would never buy or support them.

We have had some men coming around again saying they work for private alarm systems companies but they are not!
One of my neighbors that is 91 and very sharp and lives alone let one in her home, I had called and warned her about it, he immediately told her to give him her alarm necklace because he had to test it and the system! She gave it to him and he then disabled her systems and told her he had to go back in her bedroom and she needed to stand there by the unit and tell him when it buzzed.
Of course he had completely disarmed her and was now going through her rooms. When she saw him go into the bathroom she realized what was going on and what a serious situation she was in.
Thank goodness she thought quickly and shouted hello there then told the guy that her son who is a police officer was in the driveway and she needed to go open the garage door for him to come in so she was going to be moving from the unit. At that the guy came flying out of the bathroom, ran past her and out the door. She locked up immediately. Called her son, he called the police and the alarm company, they sent some one over to make sure that he had not totally disabled her alarms and checked to make sure he had not unlocked any Windows.
He was apparently looking for drugs and money. She was so upset and crying, she didn't know if he took anything. I tell you what if not for her quick thinking, well who knows what the outcome would have been. She was expecting a repair person that day because lighting had struck a tree in her yard and damaged some lines, she just automatically thought that was the person.

I don't open my door for anyone!

A number of years ago a door-to-door salesman went to my friend's door. She told him she wasn't buying anything and shut the door. He put his foot in the door so that she couldn't close it.

She was agitated and told him to move his foot. Her Rottweiller was upstairs and heard her voice and he came thundering down the stairs. The guy turned tail ran like a rabbit.

As soon as they ask "and how are you today" - I ask them "if I know them well enough to answer that." They usually don't know what to say and hang up on me!

Someone might actually have a good deal, but I don't trust any of them. When I was in college, my friend bought what he thought was 1 magazine, and ended up with 5 or 6 very costly subscriptions that were nearly impossible to cancel. I think of that everytime I hear a telemarketer selling things.

I worry about older trusting people giving out too much information.

Nope, and I am a suspicious older person. I am on the do not call list, and most of my calls are related to electricity options and the scooter and senior alarms. I let the machine take all calls if I don't recognize the caller ID.

call your cell phone

It's illegal. Tell them that, maybe they'll quit calling it. And don't give the number to anyone, not even when doing business online.

The telemarketers don't give a hoot bout being illegal. You think that they play by the rules? And many are out of the country.

Once, probably 40 years ago, I fell for a line from some charity that sold light bulbs for the blind. They bulbs supposedly lasted longer to account for an inflated price. I was suckered.

We've kept our land line primarily because I want doctors, business people, etc. to call me at home. I don't want to take personal calls in public or try to concentrate on something important when I'm distracted. I never put a cell phone number on a form.

However...if the phone companies want people to continue to pay for land lines, they should develop and implement technology to block robo-calls.

What can be done? Should we contact state or federal representatives?

It's just an outrageous invasion of privacy.

An older man calls me every few weeks. He calls out, "Susan????" It sounds like some family member frantically looking for me. Now I know his disgusting voice and just hang up.

susieQ, file a report with the FCC. That works. I've had it end practically instantaneous doing that.

No - and I do not answer the door either. I can see from the window and open it and tell them to go away if they won't give up - you would think my ballistic dog would be enough incentive for them to leave. I have suggested on many occasions that said door-to-door sales people - often dressed and acting as if they work for the government - learn the meeting of "no soliciting" - as per our sign. Re the phone calls, I unplug the phone at night - I have had them as early as 5:30 a.m. We are on Canada's Do Not Call list but it is a serious joke - and of course there are so many legal exceptions - never mind the people who don't care about the legal aspect of it all.

Don't get many calls but now with DH gone, do have to be real careful as some call to try to convince me that he bought something for me before he passed away--I don't think so!!! That is one reason I cancelled certain credit cards as soon as I did.

I am so ding dang tired of these calls. I've tried being nice and asking to be placed on their "do not call" list. I've tried to be short and to the point. I've tried to be rude. I've picked up the phone, heard the robo boop sound and hung up. Nothing works. They continue to call every day. I'm buying a loud whistle next time I'm at the store and that is what they will hear when they call from now on. grrrr.

hint if you don't have caller id, do like fil does. he lets it ring 4x before answering...usually it goes the answering machine and it stops the call...

The problem with the calls to my cell phone is there is never a human being on the call. It's always an automated message and to even find out who's behind it you have to call them and I sure am not going to do that, then they know for sure it's a good number.
I do look it up on Google and find hundreds of other mad people who want to know about it also. On occasion some one else will post the information they were able to get from them. In most cases it's about a cruise ship from Florida but of course there's a lot more to it than that. They call my husband's number too and besides me and his business associates not many have his number either.
We don't ever put our cellphone numbers on anything because I don't want the calls coming to any where but at home. I don't answer if I'm driving anyway so it is easier to deal with it from home.
I have seen on Google some people who have reported the numbers but nothing was done about it..
I do put some on the block list but they have so many roll over numbers it doesn't matter.

A guy called the other day and, after asking me how I was, told me that there was some bad stuff in my computer.

I asked him how he knew, and he said that they knew what was in there. I asked him how he found out, without knowing the code and he said that they were able to access computers.

When I told him that I haven't had a computer in my house for at least a month, maybe two, as it was in the repair shop ...

... and that I don't have internet access ...

... he hung up.

What really frosts my gizzard are the several that I get where, when I reply, there's dead line ... which goes on for about 10 - 12 seconds, then there's a click, then after a second or so, a busy signal.

Chisue, light bulbs for the blind? I'm assuming you meant they were selling light bulbs as a fundraiser on behalf of a charity to benefit the blind :-) I wouldn't have thought too many blind people needed light bulbs :-)

colleenoz -- Hee-hee! I guess that alone should have warned me off buying! LOL (Now I'm picturing some blind person trying to *warm* her hands over one of the new twisty bulbs.) I believe the pitch was that blind people MADE the bulbs. Oh, I used to be such an easy mark! I probably still am -- just don't expose myself to it.
