There are several styles that I love and want in my home.

I know I can do different styles in different rooms.

But the thing is, I cannot decide on which is my favorite.

I love the cottage/shabby chic style...a lot.

But I also love the spa look for a bathroom.

I love the warm and inviting look with a real warm color on the walls...not anything in the brown family. I've been living with beige and taupe walls.

My living room furniture is contemporary & traditional.

I cannot afford to buy new.

I hate the thought of making my pieces into the shabby chic look...only because they are nice pieces.

My bedroom is definately going to be shabby chic...and so is my kitchen...what there is of it.

I am moving into a 14x65 mobile home.

Everything The living room and 1 bedroom are all paneling.

One bedroom is painted lavender. One has wallpaper (or contact paper) that is white with small blue flowers on one wall. The other walls are either half of the wallpaper and paneling, or half blue paint and paneling.

That'll be my room. I have a half bath that has the same blue wallpaper in it. Yellow countertop...which I love...my favorite color!!

LOL!!

So does anyone else have trouble deciding on design styles?

I love to have every room different. I break all the rules and just have fun with my "off beat" style. Some people walk into my home and just crack up laughing. (Especially, those who knew the house when my folks lived here.)

I say...to each his own. I love yellow and blue together. The only suggestion I have is to paint the paneling. I wish you could come to my Garage Sale. Boy could I furnish you some shabby chic. (My former House Decorations).

I like different styles throughout the house.. without making it a drastic change.

I like shabby chic a lot too. My guest room and guest bath are shabby chic, while my living room and kitchen are somewhat shabby chic, somewhat traditional.

I agree with Gayle about painting the paneling. That looks like what the people in the link below did with their mobile home paneling. You'll get some shabby chic ideas there too!

I would say colonial style and scandi go well together. I disagree strongly that you should keep to the original style of the house. However, as a designer, I would say different ideas look better together if they share some similar characteristics or are related - as colonial and scandi are. I think there some degree of lightness and openess in both style, turned wood in both scandi and colonial furniture, although lighter wood and white in scandi. With a keen eye and careful research, two styles that share some common denominators can always work; otherwise you risk looking like a museum otherwise. I would not mix tudor and scandi for instance or high victorian english, as they are diametrically opposed, but if they share components, go ahead.

The story book whimsy corner on the right of the entry suggests a beginning for a porch roof on the front and right side of the house if you are more inclined to view it as a contemporary ranch than a Tudor wannabe. Would move the two shrubs in front of the front stoop stone section of the house and use them to fill in the spaces in the shrubs on the left side -- trimming all of the shrubs to below window sill height. Generally wouldn't change out the windows for "looks" if they're in good shape but that left one does seem oddly out of place. Depending upon what room that window is in (such as over a kitchen sink or bathroom), you might consider a small bay /garden window rather than cutting the brick to install a longer one to try to have it "match" the other windows. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/30751209944822919/ If you're keeping the wide white front door trim as is, in lieu of adding charcoal shutters (as houssaon suggested), you might want white shutters or even adding white trim around the windows -- keeping white as your one trim color . Agree with houssaon that the front railing should be removed. If you're not adding a front porch, the front stoop/landing could probably use more attention -- perhaps enlarging and reshaping it to create an arc as is over the door. If you do add a front porch, bring the under floor vent forward, too, and see if you can match the existing brick to face the vertical edges of a concrete porch as well as to outline the walk path. What type of indoor faux plant/tree would you put in a contemporary/transitional space? I feel like the ever-so-popular olive tree almost looks too “vintage” with my contemporary sofa and rug? Maybe I’m thinking too much into it. 😜 I absolutely want to stay away from mid century modern. I’m still putting the space together but wanted to get some thoughts and opinions. I also want this faux plant/tree to be about 6-7ft tall.

Forget styles. You clearly have your own style and it cannot be nailed down to the simple world that home design markets to. I would look in high end online magazines like Architectural Digest, 1stDibs Introspect, and Galerie instead of on Houzz, Pintrest, and Insta, which show more marketing than really skilled, unique design. If your designer is really good, creative, and can think beyond marketed looks then they should be able to take your list of descriptors and come up with something. You could tell them you are inspired by 1970s BMWs and vintage British toasters and they should be able to start picking pieces to show you and pull together a look. However, I find it is usually really high end designers that have these skills, and higher end budgets that can afford looks that aren't prepackaged. Sooo, what is your budget? How big is the room? What will you use the room for? Answer these questions and give the replies to your designer and see what they do: 1. What are some patterns you like? Look atKravat and see if anything grabs you. 2. Do you like shiny, metal, mirrored, wood, laqurered, glass, velvet, gold, neon, woven fibers, marble? 3. What pops of color do you like - bold black and white, lime, raspberry, deep oranges, bright yellow? 4. Do you like a sparse space, crowded space, balanced space, cozy, inviting, formal, a balance? 5. Can you find a bunch of hotel lobby pics you like even if you don't know why you like them? 6. Are there anythings about your fashion style that relates to what you could like in design? Also, what about the Four Seasons lobby you posted makes you want to live there? I think the descriptors you can find while answering that question will help hone in on your design.

Diane - we must be related! I cannot pick a style either so I've settled for eclectic. My version is a mix of traditional and clean lines. And while I adore the cottage look I'm afraid that if I were to try it the result would look more like Salvation Army than Shabby Chic.

And I love warm colors on my walls but I am so indecisive about picking paint colors that everything would be beige if it weren't for my husband who has great taste and confidence (which obviously I lack).

My parents had a trailer at their vacation property and they painted some of the paneling and wallpapered over the rest. They had to use a heavy liner under the paper to cover up the grooves in the paneling. But it was much easier on the eyes than the dark shade the paneling had been.

I am just like you, Diane. I can see the beauty in most styles. I do try to avoid the shabby chic or Victorian look just because so many things sitting around require cleaning and dusting, and I am lazy.

We removed the wall paper in our family room, two bedrooms, powder room and entry hall the last time we freshened up the place. I cannot tell you how much bigger the rooms all look without wallpaper. I tell you this because you are moving into smaller quarters with wallpaper. If the walls feel like they need to be pushed out some, strip some of that wallpaper and decorate the walls with paint.

The other thing that made the rooms look bigger is we removed the fussy window treatments and went quite simple, which seems to be the look now.

I do plan on painting the paneling..after the kids move out. DGK's are almost 5 and 2.5.

I just remembered as I was looking around the 'net..that I also love Primitive decor..and whimsical decor.
I am just eclectic like you, mcmann!

Nice to know that there are others here like me!!
