Helpful Hints, Home Remedies
Comments (22)I love the idea of using the hair conditioner for shaving legs. I need to try that one. My husband has used dryer sheets in his pockets when he is out camping and it does work to keep the mosquitoes away. Baby oil is great to remove the oil sludge from your skin that you sometimes get down at the beach (and most of us are avoiding many beaches along the Gulf for that very reason!) We found this out last summer when we were down by Corpus Christi and one of my boys had it on his legs. Brunettes - Use soy sauce as a rinse in your hair to enrich the natural color. Comb it through your hair and let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse. I need to add this list of helpful hints link to my favorites so I can pop back and refer to it later. Thanks everyone for posting these great ideas!...See Morewarts

Comments (14)Thanks for all the comments. I did buy a Horticultural oil yesterday for the scales. Will be glad to get that on. As for the health of the plants, it's always a learning process to balance wet and dry, especially when it can vary so quickly in our seasons. If we have a few dry days where we ran the fire or wood stove, the soils in the house can dry up immediately, and then I find I'm dealing with thirsty plants. But, at other times they can go much longer and I have to watch overwatering. Here, low humidity will always be an issue. I know I need to do a better job of fertilizing regularly, which would help with the health of the plant. Light is generally not an issue. We have big south-facing windows with a great deal of natural and reflected light. In fact, the inside of the house gets less light in the summer because of the leaves on the trees, which is another reason plants go outside. Al and/or rina, could you clarify something for me? Are you saying detergents are bad, but normal "soaps" (NaOH) are OK? The Dr. Bonners soap I used in the spray from my original post is the Castille variety for babies and has KOH in it. Are you saying that's OK to use and won't damage the wax coatings and general health of the leaves/soil? It confuses me because the purpose of soap is to bond to oil and grease, so I'm not clear on what soaps are better than others, be they Castille, Murphys's, or something else. dchall, the molasses post was a big surprise. Did some research and was surprised to find that some of the off-the-shelf-products actually use molasses! Will research that more. Thanks for the info. Again, I appreciate every comment!...See MoreAnyone have any home remedies for repelling mosquitoes?
Comments (58)Ya know, nothing is a substitute for reading the toxicity warnings on any pesticide product, whether it's "natural" or whatever. How long you stay out of a "fogged" area depends on what the area is "fogged" with. "Fogging" just refers to the method of application. Pyrethrin sprays 2-4 hrs. some others as little as 30 min. In mosquito infested areas, new mosquitoes will quickly repopulate. Sprays only effective in very short term and not much use if not part of an overall mosquito control program. But if you live in an area like I do, where the mosquito is the secondary state bird, you have to adapt. Total control is a pipe dream, move to a less infested part of the country. I lived in PA for half my life, was rarely bothered, particularly in urban areas. Here, hordes, can barely make it from car to front door during hatch outs. It comes in waves. We don't expect to entertain after M hour during M times outdoors. We have a screened in porch for that. We've lived in an infested area for decades and rarely get bit. We work around them. When I backpack into the worst areas, I use DEET for exposed areas. It's toxic but if you're not slathering it on all over your body daily for you entire life, your risk is much less. As for the dragonfly shortage, I dunno but these insect sprays, if applied improperly so they get into the water, are very toxic to water life, and the stuff doesn't break down in water like it does on land. Dragonflies not the most sensitive creatures to water quality, but not the least either. About midway. Even they have a point of no return. Like I said before, Mom nature can help you but only if you respect her, otherwise you're in for a heck of a battle....See More- 16 years ago
