Is it really cheaper to make your own bread now?

I sometimes bake my own bread but usually buy a loaf at Whole Foods and freeze it. I prefer homemade because I hate all the preservatives but with the high cost of flour, does it really pay to make it myself when I can get a relatively preservative free one at a store? I guess I like the idea of being able to add what I like but not if it ends up being $5 a loaf! Seasoned bakers, what do you think?
