Those are cool. I just started watching Cake Boss and Amazing Cakes. I never knew that such fancy cakes were made!

Amazing work. I'll bet Gillian's daughter could make a lot of those. I haven't seen Gillian post for quite a while. Has anyone heard from her?

Everything on the cakes is edible!! The flowers, all the accessories - everything.

If you watch the show you can see how time consuming it is to make all the decorations by hand.

They're pretty, but they're all made with fondant, which tastes just awful. I know that lots of decorators put a layer of buttercream underneath and expect that you'll discard the fondant, which I suppose is a good compromise.

Personally, I'll go for buttercream every time, even if you can't do all the amazing things with it.

joann i'd have to agree with you. when dh and i were married we had the tiny reeception at my mom and dads apt in vegas...

any way my mother didn't trust herslf to make a cake, and bought one...talked her in to making one of her best, an angel food with 7 minute (cooked) frosting! it put the bakery cake to shame...it was so elegant with it's fluffy frosting, and tasted sooo good!

they do make an striking center piece...my friend's dd had one in black and white (her colors) white fondant with the black swirls...she's seen it done on martha's show...

You guys should also watch Ace of Cakes! It's located in Baltimore, where my MIL lives. I keep telling if she ever needs an super nice, but expensive cake, call them! Although since they've been on Food Netwrok, I hear there's a year wait list for a Duff cake!

I agree with Joann. While I do appreciate the art, cake to me is not just about how it looks but how it tastes.

DD and I recently had this discussion. I told her I could make the "perfect" looking fondant cake for when she gets married or something people will eat. She laughed and said NO fondant. She's seen it at other weddings and thinks it's a huge waste. A lot of brides even have a dummy fondant cake and another iced sheet cake for eating.

Those cakes are really amazing, and the creators are true artists.

I know I'm in the minority though, but I do like the taste of fondant. It's rich, so I can't have too much, though. And it depends on the brand of fondant too. Wilton, for example, is notoriously disgusting, but some brands are much tastier. Still, it's an acquired taste.

I agree about the taste; It seems a waste of money to buy an expensive cake just to have a focal point. There should be enough going on at the wedding reception that you shouldn't need to take out a loan for a focal point! Although I admit I have seen the cakes and they are really pretty. I guess I'm just practical. Give me a nice slice of delicious cake anyday. (I have no idea what fondant is!)

Interesting responses. I agree - stale fondant tastes terrible, but freshly made from scratch can be pretty tasty.

Did anyone check out the cake flavors and fillings? Yum!! I think these cakes are for more than just for show. But y'all don't have to eat them - more left for me. LOL!
