Is it possible to catch a stray cat?

We've noticed a small cat coming into our yard frequently. I didn't think much about it because I assumed it was someone's pet. But this morning she came with 2 kittens. Who would allow kittens to roam outside? I went outside and called to them but the mother cat hissed and the 3 of them took off. I wasn't close to them physically, maybe about 40 feet.

I'm not positive they're strays or feral or just pets allowed outside. We live in the suburbs and there's no way I could contact all of my neighbors to ask if the cats are theirs. But I am concerned about the kittens. I'd be willing to take all 3 to the vet and have them inoculated and spayed.

I think I'll just watch them for a week or so and see if the kittens come back with the mother. Maybe they just slipped out and the owner didn't notice. But if they return every day I'm not sure what I should do....if anything. If they are feral I doubt I could catch them.

Any thoughts on this?
