Hubs always had a thing for Theresa Brewer. Some of you younger folk probably don't know who she was but she was a singer in the 50's. Real cute.

Hmmmmmmm...this is a hard one. Like many, I love it just the way it is. But then some sort of stone in the center could really set it off. I like what concreteprimroses suggested about a found object because ravens are junk collectors. What about some sort of polished stone? Be sure to post a picture if you do add to it! I would love it either way. Robert, I know art galleries in a few small Wisconsin towns that are big tourist draws that would love this kind of stuff!

Hi everyone, HOORAY!!!!! The STEELERS brought home one for the thumb! Thanks Semper! You are so wonderful to do this for all us ponders. It was great fun! And thank you for the win. I asked Semper to donate my winnings to The National Aviary right here in Pittsburgh, PA. It is a wonderful place that is close to my heart. Here is a pic of the Bald Eagles that reside there. Notice the one flapping only has one wing. Poor thing had been shot by some @#$&*!*....... And this is a picture of me the last time I was there..... Thanks for helping take care of the birds Semper. This is my second major garden, and I learned a lot of the basics with the first one. I didn't have the forum with my first garden, but I did have my horticulturalist sister, a keen gardener herself, who gave me lots of information, encouragement, and plants. I'm sorry I don't have any pictures of either of my gardens; words will have to do. Things I learned: My first garden was in the Pacific Northwest, and I learned to love the old once-flowering roses there. At first I wanted repeat-blooming roses, but the more once-bloomers I grew, the more of them I wanted. They don't work everywhere, but in the PNW they're fabulous. I have and love them here as well, but they come into flower right when it's getting really hot, and so aren't as well suited to local conditions as in Washington. So the other thing I've learned is to grow roses suited to your local conditions. I'm gradually allowing Bourbons into my garden here: they did poorly in my first garden because they didn't have summer heat, while here they're great. I learned to plan for succession of bloom, rather than roses that bloom all year long (this is still a characteristic of temperate climates): here this means, more or less, spring bulbs, lilacs, tall bearded iris, peonies and roses, clematis, lavender and buddleia, dahlias, roses again. I found out that roses are drought tolerant plants that can happily go weeks without water; in fact, I found out that a lot of plants are more drought tolerant than I had supposed. Western Washington and the Italian foothills are both dry in summer. A lot of my mistakes in my first garden involved not siting plants correctly: not exploiting walls for warmth; putting shade plants in shade, sun plants in sun. For some reason, right from the beginning I gardened organically and didn't use the various poisons available to help the gardener; and I also believed in mulch and soil improvement from the start. I've never seen any reason to change this approach. I started gardening as a non-pruner, and have slowly learned how to prune as I went along. I think this is the healthiest path of development. As Henry Mitchell said, often the best thing the gardener can do is nothing. My gardening philosophy is minimalist: I do only what I think is necessary, always working toward a garden that will be relatively self-sustaining (I still have an enormous amount of labor, don't worry!). My sister introduced me to the writings of Henry Mitchell, among other things, so I read about garden design and plant selection from the start. I think this helped me avoid a lot of mistakes I might otherwise have made. I've learned here in Italy to be very wary of doing anything that might provoke a landslide. About roses, I've learned to look at the whole plant rather than at the flowers, and to take size estimates with plenty of salt. It's really hard to get an idea of what a rose is like without seeing a well-grown specimen at first hand. This is also quite terribly true of flower colors: photographs are untrustworthy. Melissa

The only male relatives I have are my husband (almost 70), my brother....who is in his 80's and my nephew, who is in his 50's and married. (Oh, and I have a son-in-law, who is around 40 years old). I don't expect any of them to have a sexual attraction towards Carol Christmas. I mean, we may be kind of "out there"...I am a possum rehabber and that is kind of strange, but making anyone feel sexually uncomfortable would be the fartherest thing from any of our minds....of that, I am sure. I think my nephew would like to have some family. His mother and siblings are all dead. She is likely, his full sister. I would caution him (and will caution him) if this proceeds, to go very slowly and let her take the lead on this. She may never want anything to do with any of us, and that is understandable. She might well resent any intrusion in her life....and I understand that completely. My life is very quiet. I would not be open to a bunch of drama, myself. I will see if I can find an adoption group to join. If for no other reason than to get feedback on what they think about this. If I go to any meetings, I will take my nephew. I'd invite my brother along, but he is getting kind of feeble. The very last thing I want to do is cause anyone any discomfort or make them feel uneasy. Just because she is a blood relative, does not mean that her life experiences haven't made her entirely different from any of us and she may have nothing in common with us, and no interest in us whatsoever. I am not at all a pushy person. I don't want my "idle curiosity" to be a source of trauma or pain or the slightest bit of problem for anyone. I would like to give her some info on family health issues....which really aren't many....we are all very healthy....and I can give her pictures of her birth mother. I can fill in any gaps she may have, but I would want her to know that she is under no obligation to include me (or us) in any part of her family. When I was growing up, my grandmother (father's mother) lived next door to us. My mother never got along with her mother in law, and from what I understand, the worst insult anyone could say in our family was "you are just like Grandma Stout"....who really was known to be a rather mean old lady. I remember when I was about 9 years old, going over there to play with a couple of cousins and when it was time to eat lunch, she made me go home. When I came back, after lunch, I had left my stick horse there, and my grandmother had thrown it on her burn pile and was setting it on fire. I tried to pull it out of the fire and she hit me with her cane. Anyway, I really looked up to one of my cousins....mainly because I loved horses and she knew a lot about horses....although neither of us had a horse. Anyway, I was not allowed to play with her, and the last time I saw her was in 1957, at my grandmother's funeral. I found her on Facebook and I very reluctantly sent her a friend request and message. I was afraid she would want nothing to do with me, because our families didn't get along. However, I was pleasantly surprised...and we have become good friends and we often joke about how shocked our folks would be that we have become good friends.

I asked my husband and he couldn't or wouldn't give me an answer. I always thought Pricilla Presley was pretty but botox took care of that. Charlize Theron is very pretty and I quess gets my vote today. I have loved Sandra Bullock for many years and she is very very attractive but not a natural beauty in my eyes.

I find it interesting how many of these women are brunette when the trend these days, it seems, is that everyone is bleaching their hair out. Time to stop??

Both DH and DS don't go for classic Hollywood cookie cutter beauty. On their list would be girl next door types with a bit of ethnic or not so perfect interesting feature(s) tossed in. I asked DH and he said Sandra Bullock would make his list along with Linda Ronstadt, Valerie Bertanelli,Mary Steenburgen and Bernadette Peters.

I noticed the lack of blondes in the list but actually there's a lack of blondes in life anyway. I always thought Christina Applegate was gorgeous but when you can smell the bleach through the TV screen, that's not attractive to me and this now popular skunkwoman look from the lazy bleachers is not attractive to me either.

Couldn't remember their names before, but have to add Elizabeth Montgomery and Reese Witherspoon to the list.

Even though she's not a "classic" beauty, Julia Roberts gets my DH's vote--and mine, too. Still, when I look at pictures of Elizabeth Taylor in her twenties with those violet eyes that were deep enough to drown in, she'll have to be on the list, too.
