The Kitchen Table

What are your plans for the week-end?

Today my sister and I are going to visit my brother who

is wheelchair bound and can't speak or read after having

a stroke. Tomorrow I'm working 10a-6p at the science

center.

Sticking close to home this weekend to keep an eye on DH. He just had shoulder surgery a couple days ago.

We're at a large weekend long Street Rod Jamboree in Macungie, PA.

Car show during the day, 50's & 60's bands at night with dancing outdoors.

Lots of fun....be home on Sunday.

Palm Springs Modernism Week (Fall preview this week-end)

My brother and I went to Palm Springs last Thursday for a long week-end, just to relax and do some shopping, and I learned that if we had waited a week, we could have gone to the Fall Preview of Moderism Week, which is in February. In fact, tickets for the February event go on sale November 1, and I do think that they sell out. February is a great time to visit PS, although I like March a bit better. October is still very hot (95°), and so we spent a fair amount of time in the pool. Oldchello was this month also, which I did not know that much about before we went, but since that took place in Indio, the hotels in PS were not fully booked. One restaurant that we like was still in its "off season" hours, and so we weren't able to go there for lunch, but we don't go to PS for food. We did go to the art museum, which has a Weiner Family Collection that was pretty interesting. We did not make it to the Design Center, as we decided to go to the Cabazon outlet mall on our last day, but we did do a fair amount of shopping Uptown, where my brother bought a new coffee table. I haven't photographed it yet, but I will start another thread concerning this table, as I have a few questions about it. My brother bought a Versace suit at Cabazon for 70% off, but the sleeves are too long, and so I will have to alter it for him. The suit still cost more than the coffee table, but he will save a bit of money by having me alter it instead of someone else. Anyway, I wanted to let everyone know about the Modernism Week event, and if you want to go in February, I do recommend making your plans now. And if you are in SoCal, you can still make it to the Fall Preview, although the weather will still be fairly hot. I bought a couple of Modernism books while there, and if you are looking for MCM books, Palm Springs is the place to go. Just Modern has the best collection of these books.

We've had 4 contractors...no GC. 1 plumber to move the gas line, but they didn't seem to care about building codes when they drilled though the ceiling joists and didn't listen very well when I told them where to put the gas for the range. The actual gas supply is where it needs to be but the shut off valve is *barely* not behind the adjacent cabinet. We did our own water supply. 2 drywall contractors, the first of which was recommended by neighbors and were HORRIBLE, the second were reasonably good where it counts but still haven't come back out to sand in corners near the floor so we can have straight baseboards. Good thing we're nowhere near ready for baseboards. And to be fair to them, we did have a hurricane get in the way of everything. The 4th is a very expensive electrician, who my dad has known for 20 years and does all his electric. They've been pretty good too but a lot of junction boxes are still set back to far for proper seating of covers, and we haven't even tiled the backsplash yet, which will make it even worse. Long story short, there are many out there who won't do the job you would do in your own home if you were able to. So now my regrets...we're not finished, so they haven't all come to light yet...I only have 1. I wish we had better quality cabinets. They're not terrible. They were already assembled RTA we bought off Craigslist and they saved us about $6000. The thing is, if we gotten the ones we were planning to buy (Shenandoah from Lowes) we would probably have run out of money by now. So there's that.

Week 165 - what are your remodel plans for next year?

Well, the major project will be getting new siding, shutters and roof thanks to the tree that fell last August. The insurance adjuster was extraordinarily slow in processing the claim, and it is now too cold to do the work. I have had a leak from the roof damage recently, so I'm hoping for a warm enough, snow free day soon to get that patched. On my next day off I'm climbing into the attic to see if I need to pull out and replace insulation (This involves emptying a bedroom closet, hauling the stepladder in and upstairs from the garage, and climbing through the hatch in the closet ceiling. Praying that I don't have to mess with wet and frozen insulation!). Then I need to repair the bedroom ceiling where the water penetrated, and repaint. The rest will be done in spring. I need to choose new siding and trim colors from those available in the brands my contractor uses -- and I am so far stumped (I have a thread about this in home décor if you have an interest -- I need help!). I need to finish up the little touch-ups in the family room (where I installed a new floor and painted 3 walls this year), but I've decided to also go ahead and paint the 4th wall which is all knotty pine built in drawers and cabinets. I just don't like the way it looks with the newly painted walls and new floor -- if not painted, it needs to be sanded and refinished. I'd rather paint. Then I think I will turn my attention to the bathroom, which is starting to look shabby from the partial redo done some 13-15 years ago -- the wallpaper even before that. The wallpaper has stains, the ceiling has a small crack, and the tub is badly in need of refinishing. Another decision -- when I do the tub, should I refinish or replace the tile, or just let it be (in good shape, and neutral, but a bit dated)? The floor and fixtures are still in good shape at least.

Monica, my DH left at 2am for a Corvette show in Carlyle(sp?) PA. He'll be home tomorrow night.

I'm going to visit with sister and brother, and then I'm off to the JETS/Giants game tonight. Go JETS!!!!!

Tomorrow is a day full of little home projects, including laundry.

Since I can't drive because of foot surgery I will be spending the weekend at home in the recliner. I am sooo bored.

Work, work, work! Inside and out, it never ends. Or as I was saying to DH, it takes us twice as long to do half as much. I can't remember the last time we did something just for fun.

deemarie, it is spelled Carlisle. I go to the War Collage there for my groceries. I guess I live , maybe 30 to 45 min. away. It is a nice town, I wish we had retired there instead of York. vique

Gotta clean a little. We have a friend stopping by and we will go out to eat with him tonight.

I need to check on my Mom today. Maybe get a Pedi while I'm out.

Tomorrow we are suppose to go to the Lake, depending on weather.

Yesterday I sat in the dentist chair 21/2 hours so that kept me from doing some much needed cleaning. Tonight we go out with friends for dinner and drinks. YAHOO!!

Since I bought my first ever carpet shampooer this week, I will be cleaning my living room carpet today. After that I will be glued to the TV. Tomorrow is church and lunch out afterwards with my friends.

We spent the morning at a funeral, so I'm going to relax for a while. My sweetie pie (8 y o) is coming up to play with me, and later this afternoon we'll go visit the friend whose DH was buried this morning. Tomorrow we'll go to church and then probably to the horse races. I'm hoping to meet DS's new girlfriend this week end (he promised!)

Don't know about tomorrow yet...except church and lunch. That's always a 'forsure'

But I got a phone call about an hour ago...Old friends of ours called. They live in a small town about 30 miles north of here. They want to play pinochle. She's even bringing dinner. She's making a "Coke" roast. She was going to make mashed potatoes too..but there's no reason for her to carry all that...I'll just fix the "taters"....Denny's going to go to our neighborhood farmers market to get some corn and tomatoes. Some tomatoes and squash chopped up with Italian dressing would be good.

We always have a good time when they come..

Last night one of our daughter and the kids came for homemade chicken and noodles.

Yesterday I went shopping with her...when I was getting in my car to head home she said..."Yes, I guess I can"....said it like I was twisting her arm or something...I said "You can what?"...She answered "I guess I can come to supper for Chicken and noodles..."...LOL
Just her "nice" way of inviting herself...gotta love that girl.

I plan to stay at home all weekend.

Nita, my recliner has become my best friend. I sit here almost everyday, but I don't have the energy for anything else.
Jammer went to his friends in a neighboring town. They are having horse races today. Hope they don't get rained out!

No plans, just staying home. Both girls go off to college Monday. I'll miss them.

Today I got up early to go to the farmer's market in Lexington. It's right downtown on a one-way street and no nearby parking. Bad set up. I was in the wrong lane when I went by what public parking I did manage to find so I gave up and went through Versailles on the way home just in case their market was open. It was. Bought a few things there.

I struck up a conversation with a guy selling beer cheese and he told me there was a better market in Frankfort, downtown but with parking right there. I decided to go there after I left.

Went to Frankfort and bought even more stuff including hormone free ground chuck. We're going to eat some of it tonight for dinner. I was looking for eggs but the only guy selling was out of chicken eggs. He only had quail eggs and they were tiny. Decided to pass.

I really got excited when I found a huge red bell pepper for 50 cents! They're outrageous in Kroger or Wal-Mart and not so fresh. I also found some small fresh peaches. Not those huge, hard as a rock ones you find in stores, but juicy ones.

I've been hanging out at the market gardening forum here and another site and thinking of buying some land somewhere and moving so I can have a market garden myself someday. (3-5 years from now possibly) I did it for a few years when I lived down south. We had two acres and I was working on turning most of it into gardening space. That's one of the reasons I went to the markets today, I wanted to check them out and get some fresh food.

Did the rest of the grocery shopping and went through McD's for an ice tea and saw two guys set up in the parking lot across from it. They were selling corn which I hadn't seen at the other markets. So, bought some corn from them.

Tomorrow it's back to reality and work. ) :

Scratch my earlier post. Changes: Friends not able to go to Dinner tonight so we went alone.

Scratch: Sunday...Friends canceled the Lake trip.

Today DH took both boys to roller hockey practice. DS#1 has played for several years, but DS#2 decided to try this year. He is more the "try anything once" kind of kid.

Then I took DD w/me on the big grocery run- should be good for 2 weeks. The club store and regulary grocery, as well as a couple other stops. Hours and one very full van. Now I still have to finish putting it away.

Laundry, but that never ends. I just need to try to catch up a little.

And the first PTA newsletter of the school year has to be done this week, so I need to get it nearly finished Sunday.

I need another weekend. The last few very busy weeks have left housework piling up. The house is chaos, worse than usual. It was supposed to get better when the kids were in school again, but it hasn't!
