R U Ready For Some Football ?.... YES!!!!

I am sooo excited that football season starts tonight..Well ok it is pre- season football but I'll take it anyway. So hppy to be looking forward to fall and all the greatness that season brings..especially here in N.E. Go Pats !!!

Chocolate mint sounds heavenly! I'm a sucker for chocolate, have a huge sweet tooth, and that's what makes dieting so difficult for me! I just love bakery and chocolate... preferably chocolate bakery! I usually grow some regular mint and also spearmint in the garden, along with oregano, basil, thyme, sage, cilantro, parsley and chives. The herbs are mixed in with the perennials, and the mint usually takes over and requires a drastic cutting back in summer! This spring, I have to dig out some of the oregano... it's overtaking the dianthus and coreopsis, and starting to get in the way of the garage door! Some herbs are just a tad bit invasive! Good zucchini bread is a great trade off for tolerating a few plants and bulbs! You have lucky roommates! They not only get to enjoy your baking... they also get to enjoy your flowers! I've heard that species tulips are fabulous for forcing... I may try some next year. I also want to try forcing Lily-Of-The-Valley... now, that would be a wonderful mid-winter pick-me-up with that heavenly scent! This is my first year forcing any bulb, and I've got a nice pot of hyacinths getting bigger every day, just begging to bloom and spread that lovely perfume! Without my indoor garden, I'd go winter wacky!

Jenfm, I've always thought about the dwindling daylight hours effects on our fall/winter vegetable gardens. Not just fewer hours, but less intensity as the plants grow. Then there's the seasonal lag through January before things really start the upturn toward spring. It's no wonder the largest pumpkins and squash grow in Alaska and Siberia. Unlimited sunlight on those large leaves! Along with the soil sterilizing deep freeze every winter. I've never had luck with summer squash here. They come up and flower fine, but immediately after flowering the small fruits rot or vine borers get into the stems. I'm going to order some of those Tromboncino squash seeds very soon. Ill, did you say you planted that in the fall? Cucumbers do only slightly better. I don't think they handle humidity well at all (mildew) and get the same bugs as the squash. I'm planning to start some cukes in late Dec to take advantage of the dry season and lengthening days. In a large pot with a trellis. I think you can sow amaranth anytime of year. Once it's established and you let one go to seed it pops up everywhere. I really see the best growth in the spring. It goes to seed more quickly later summer and fall. I've found the red one does better for me. The green one must be very tasty though. It's always eaten up in the garden, by little caterpillars. I love nasturtiums among the veggies too. They pop up every fall like magic.

I did a cross of Inniswood and Northern Exposure this summer, still waiting for the seed pod to turn yellow, I have grown inniswood seed in the past and liked alot of what i got, thought that i would try to cross it with another hosta that i like, supposedly they are both from the Elegans progeny line thing somewhere, we will see what happens, most green ones will be grown for a couple of years and then pitched( if they dont look like anything worthy) or given away. I only do one batch of seeds per year cause there just aint no room for all of them to grow!! as far as lights go, i use the cheapest shop lights that i can find, and suspend them from clothes line rope tide in slip knots so i can adjust the height. quite simple and cheap. all the growing is done on a short table that is 4' X 8' the size of a sheet of plywood, the lights are on for about or less than 14 hours per day. and they are only shop lights that cost about $12.00, and usually last about 3 years (some last for over 10 now!!). and that is what i use on my aquariums too!! so much cheaper than buying all those expensive and nice looking lights to hang over a tank of water that i will be the only one looking at!! (the aquariums are in the basement and you need a pass and special invitation (hopefully the watch cat wont bite you) signed by me to get down there!!) and you dont really need to invest in any special grow light bulbs, i use "cool white" bulbs. oh!! did i tell you? on another note!!,,,, talk about waste. I went to my local Taco Bell tonight, and bought 1 taco salad and 2 nachos bell grande (feeding 3 mouths on this episode!!) and they gave me 34 PACKS OF HOT SAUCE!! what am I going to do with 34 PACKS of hot sauce?? (yes i did count them!!) If i was buying hosta wholesale I could have got one hosta for the cost of what they just gave me!! The cheapest hosta that i bought for wholesale was paul's glory for $6.00 and my partner at the time went thru the roof!! (or i should say the high end hosta at the time, years ago, another story when i owned a backyard nursery) Uh.. there was a beer around here somewhere!! man uhhhhh... PHOEBE (the cat)!!! wheres my beer?? Darn, I left it on the kitchen counter and now it is probably warm!! Drat!! LOL Paul

I would really like to. But as of right now, I don't even know what any of my kids are going to wear. We have had a crazy October and it just hasn't gotten done. That is today's single goal. I'm browsing, looking for original but simples ideas. As soon as they get home from school, we're making decisions. First, we'll go through the "Box of Halloweens Past," get creative, and go for any supplies we still need. So if that goes well and I get inspired instead of frustrated, maybe I'll think of something for myself. I don't go anywhere special, just walk with kids around the neighborhood/answer the door. But it would still be fun. I just read an idea on line for "substitute teacher." Dressing in "teacher clothes," then making it all disarrayed, hair frazzled, chalk prints on the clothes, paper airplane in the hair, "kick me" note on the back. I was actually thinking of wearing it to school book fair tomorrow (I'm volunteering all day). Since I actually am one, it might get some laughs. My 15 y/o likes to do something with a pun. Last year he was "white trash." Cover w/white trash bag and tape pieces of trash all over himself. He and a neighbor both. I could see him walk up to people several houses away, then just hear the hooting laughter and knew they asked "what are you" and he answered. I was a little nervous he might offend someone, but he said absolutely everyone that it was very funny. And some thought it was hysterical! LOL! I still have to get candy, too. I decided to just give full size candy bars this year. I almost bought them two weeks ago, but DD said, "Moo-ooom! You know we'll eat them all before Halloween!" And I knew she was right. ;o) We will have tons of kids, many of whom we know well.

After this hot summer, I am ready for the cool crisp fall air, and of course football. I may have to try to finally make it to a Packer's game this year. But we do plan on going to 4 of the UW Badger home games this year. DS is on the band drumline, so it's extra fun cos we get to hang out with him a little bit! And our DD is coming home from Ukraine on September 3 and will be marching at Alumni day on Sept. 24th, can't wait.

We are so ready in the household.....Just last week, hubby bought a big screen TV to make it easier to see those yard lines, so he says.....
I do believe there is a preseason game on tonight and our STEELERS are on tomorrow night....

NO.NO NO..Our local station preempted two of my favorite shows tonight for an Eagles pre -game. HATE HATE football bur love baseball, the all American sport. Go Phillies.

I'm with Lily316. Not looking forward to football season at all. It gripes me to no end when the local Pittsburgh tv chanels begin the news with 10 minutes of the latest Steelers news to be followed by "More on the Steelers" in our sports segment coming up. The 35 minutes of the 11 o'clock news on game nights amounts to maybe 10 minutes devoted real news and the weather when the Steelers win. It isn't quite that bad when they loose. We always root for the opposing team. Yeah, I know, I have a bad attitude.

Don't give a flying rats @ss about any other sports. I don't really know why either, it's just that growing up our house was always football. DH's home was golf. Ugh, that's good background noise for a Sunday afternoon nap, lol.

My Dad, the biggest most devoted Steelers fan I ever knew, is the one that got DH hooked on the Steelers. Now his whole family watches them. I bought my MIL a Troy Polamalu jersey for her birthday 2 years ago, she about flipped.

Good luck to all. I just hope we have a good season without anyone getting seriously injured.

I used to be a football fan but now there's such a distaste in my mouth from the spoiled brats, including the owners and the league, that I've lost most if not all of my interest. The state shut down for lack of putting together a budget that could balance but there sits the (multi-billionaire) team owner with his tin cup on capitol steps begging for money and it looks like the idiots are going to give it to him! Un-freaking-believable!

But this isn't the first. The spoiled brats at the University had a great stadium but when the dome went up, oh, those poor babies couldn't be expected to play outdoors! that's inhumane! You can't treat children like that! So they gave in and moved to the dome, and tore down the stadium. After a few years, the poor babies couldn't be expected to play indoors! They need a (new) open stadium!

And that wasn't enough. Tax'em Tim (yes, the guv who brought toll roads to MN) was afraid some of the spoiled brats might leave the state so he shoved a tax down onto a county to pay for a baseball stadium, because those poor babies couldn't be expected to play in a dome! At least he's humiliating himself now playing presidential candidate.

AFAIC, go Twins... and take the Vikings with you. I've had enough of all of you. We don't need you in the state. I have a new thing called "television" and can watch games without you here.

My dad used to watch football. I didn't but didn't complain. Now when hubby watches it - they have 3 men talking the whole time an hour before and during the game. I walk around going blah blah blah. Play the game and shut up about it.
I guess my answer is NO.

NO, No, NO!!! I will lose my DH until January. He will sit in front of the boob tube watching that pigskin fly regardless of who is playing. He will have the sound turned up so high I have to wear ear plugs. I'm not excited at all. I can't wait until January when it is all over.
