R U Ready For Some Football ?.... YES!!!!

I am sooo excited that football season starts tonight..Well ok it is pre- season football but I'll take it anyway. So hppy to be looking forward to fall and all the greatness that season brings..especially here in N.E. Go Pats !!!

Meiwa to Poncirus several 4 grafts to be made. At the end of the year the grafts will either be successful, or the kumquats will take off on their own roots, or the trees will face winter UNPROTECTED OUTSIDE. In the last few years I've mostly been making jams and jellies, Ana's raspberry vinegar and Annie's strawberry rhubarb jelly are a couple of my favorites. I'm definitely going to try Natals Berry Berry Hot Pepper Jelly, it looks soooooo good. I freeze more than I can nowadays, always used a water bath when I did can so that limited what I could put up. I used to do a lot of peaches, pears, cherries and plums, they taste way better than what you can buy, especially peaches. We've got a propane burner (for want of a better name) which we take out and fire up outside either in the courtyard or lathhouse where it's cool and do any water bath canning there, no need to steam up the kitchen. trudi d and engineeregarden Do you both do wintersowing outside?? trudi d are you the same trudi d (Davidoff) on Wintersown.org? Just saw this. Yes that's me. I only start my tomatoes outside. I think I started WSing toms a winter or two after I started writing about my experiences, so that would be nearly seven or eight years ago. WS is based on any plant's ability to reseed. Because toms reseed in my garden I wanted to give it a try. Well, I did, and it worked like charm. I never went back to starting toms in the windowsill after that. You have to be smart in choosing what varieties to WS. If you live in zone five you're not going to get ripe fruits with a 90DTM tomato--it's not logical. So, for short seasons it's going to work better to choose tomatoes with names that sound acceptable to a cool climate or short-season garden like Speckle Siberian, Cold Set, Early Girl, Mountain Princess, etc. Look for varieties close to or under 70DTM. Yesterday was Winter Solstice and the beginning of the Winter Sowing season. I didn't do any tomatoes yesterday--just my Solstice Sow seed sets, but usually very early on in season I work with trees and shrubs, in January I do my perennials, biennials and hardy annuals, and then by the middle of February I start to work with frost intolerant varieties. WS tom seedlings can take frost down to about 27, 28 degrees which is fine by me as that's about the norm for February lows here. Well, though I didn't sow any, for Solstice I still did have a wonderful tomato experience here--the postman brought me a very fat mailer from Geneva, NY--it was from the Plant Genetics Resource Unit of the USDA/ARS, they granted my request and graced WinterSown another set of the most wonderful of varieties which I will Winter Sow, half this year and half next year. Sue36--You're not understanding Buehl's duct. The opening is in the floor, next to the wall. It's not spaced out from the wall where she could use a floor duct. The duct is not coming up into the stud cavity. This style of register is quite common here in the upper Midwest though they were new to me when I moved here from the south central part of the United States. My house has them & is 30+ years old. And it is the overwhelming choice for forced air systems in new builds. They looked weird to me for a while, until I got used to them. Now, I don't notice them because they're 'normal'. We've owned houses with both styles of registers. I prefer these because less dirt & stuff gets into the duct than what does with floor registers. And, there's no need to attach a deflector to them, either. Moving that opening out from the wall is a big deal if she has rigid metal ductwork. I can guarantee blood loss & depletion of one's French vocabulary. :) And for no good reason other than, to a few people, a minor aesthetic one. No one is going to notice that duct except for Buehl and only for a few days and that's because she is admiring her beautiful new floors. Everyone else is going to see the gorgeous floor, the pretty windows & what's outside the windows and the duct is going to disappear in the same way that outlets & switches do.

After this hot summer, I am ready for the cool crisp fall air, and of course football. I may have to try to finally make it to a Packer's game this year. But we do plan on going to 4 of the UW Badger home games this year. DS is on the band drumline, so it's extra fun cos we get to hang out with him a little bit! And our DD is coming home from Ukraine on September 3 and will be marching at Alumni day on Sept. 24th, can't wait.

We are so ready in the household.....Just last week, hubby bought a big screen TV to make it easier to see those yard lines, so he says.....
I do believe there is a preseason game on tonight and our STEELERS are on tomorrow night....

NO.NO NO..Our local station preempted two of my favorite shows tonight for an Eagles pre -game. HATE HATE football bur love baseball, the all American sport. Go Phillies.

I'm with Lily316. Not looking forward to football season at all. It gripes me to no end when the local Pittsburgh tv chanels begin the news with 10 minutes of the latest Steelers news to be followed by "More on the Steelers" in our sports segment coming up. The 35 minutes of the 11 o'clock news on game nights amounts to maybe 10 minutes devoted real news and the weather when the Steelers win. It isn't quite that bad when they loose. We always root for the opposing team. Yeah, I know, I have a bad attitude.

Don't give a flying rats @ss about any other sports. I don't really know why either, it's just that growing up our house was always football. DH's home was golf. Ugh, that's good background noise for a Sunday afternoon nap, lol.

My Dad, the biggest most devoted Steelers fan I ever knew, is the one that got DH hooked on the Steelers. Now his whole family watches them. I bought my MIL a Troy Polamalu jersey for her birthday 2 years ago, she about flipped.

Good luck to all. I just hope we have a good season without anyone getting seriously injured.

I used to be a football fan but now there's such a distaste in my mouth from the spoiled brats, including the owners and the league, that I've lost most if not all of my interest. The state shut down for lack of putting together a budget that could balance but there sits the (multi-billionaire) team owner with his tin cup on capitol steps begging for money and it looks like the idiots are going to give it to him! Un-freaking-believable!

But this isn't the first. The spoiled brats at the University had a great stadium but when the dome went up, oh, those poor babies couldn't be expected to play outdoors! that's inhumane! You can't treat children like that! So they gave in and moved to the dome, and tore down the stadium. After a few years, the poor babies couldn't be expected to play indoors! They need a (new) open stadium!

And that wasn't enough. Tax'em Tim (yes, the guv who brought toll roads to MN) was afraid some of the spoiled brats might leave the state so he shoved a tax down onto a county to pay for a baseball stadium, because those poor babies couldn't be expected to play in a dome! At least he's humiliating himself now playing presidential candidate.

AFAIC, go Twins... and take the Vikings with you. I've had enough of all of you. We don't need you in the state. I have a new thing called "television" and can watch games without you here.

My dad used to watch football. I didn't but didn't complain. Now when hubby watches it - they have 3 men talking the whole time an hour before and during the game. I walk around going blah blah blah. Play the game and shut up about it.
I guess my answer is NO.

COMPLETE AND TOTAL DITTO to WHAT MY FRIEND CYNIC SAID!!!! The overpaid balljockies and their owners should whip out their own plastic or check book, not beg from the already stressed, moneywise, public.

NO, No, NO!!! I will lose my DH until January. He will sit in front of the boob tube watching that pigskin fly regardless of who is playing. He will have the sound turned up so high I have to wear ear plugs. I'm not excited at all. I can't wait until January when it is all over.
