New Windows 7 computer--Trouble installing FF

I know this belongs on the computer forum, but you gals are so sweet and helpful and this forum moves along much quicker!

DD has a new laptop with windows 7 and now hubby is having trouble installing firefox--an alert window comes up. Anyone have this problem and solve it?

OOhhh. I'm glad you posted! I am running XP service pack 3, but I know that some day, I'll have to move to Win7. Now, I wonder if there will be a problem with ThunderBird, my email utiltiy.

Its time to mosey over to the MicroSoft site to see if they have published a compatibility list for Win7, or maybe a list of known incompatibles.

As I understand it, all version of Windows up through Win98 tried to be backwards compatible with existing software. Legacy DOS programs were abandoned in XP. (There are some gurus who say they can make DOS programs work in XP, but with special techniques.) A complete break happened with Vista. Vista was a completely new operating system and a number of incompatibilites with older software occurred. I thought that Win7 was a remake of Vista to make it better behaved and I would expect software that ran in Vista should also run in Win7. However, I expect problems for software written for XP and older versions.

Go to the link below to review your software compatibility with Windows 7. When you arrive at this page, enter the name of your software in the box at top left.

Alternatively, you can search through the many pages by paging through page after page, but that's going to take a very long time.

It will be seen that there are many incompatibilites even with MicroSoft's own untilities written for earlier versions of Windows.

Interestingly, MS recommends that if you have a version for Vista, try that one in Win7. It may work.

first you need to know which version of windows 7 you want there are several, I would not go under the windows home premium, the starter version for example is quite lacking. The various versions have different options not all have the same things on them. Which one is right for you? Windows 7 Product Editions: A Comparison look at costco and sams as well as walmart for prices. also very important is what version of windows do you currently have and will you be replacing it with 7 if you have vista you can do an upgrade but if you have xp you will have to wipe clean and do a full clean install, it is however suggested to do a clean install even if you have vista. So the problem does not seem to be the motherboard, you have a signal onscreen. Is the replacement motherboard identical to the one that failed? Did you simply pop the hard drive back in with the original Windows install on it? Do you have the CD that came with the newer mobo? (If not the drivers will be available online but expect slow downloads fro the Asus site if you use them) Have you tried putting the XP CD in the drawer and doing a repair to see if this will overcome the issues? Remember if you do this you will need to download and install every update and patch issued since the CD was created.

you have to have your email address book in the correct format to transfer it over to thunderbird, what format do you have it in? We need to know which email program you were using that you have your address book in that you want to move to thunderbird also. If it is outlook then you should follow these directions to create it in csv format, once you have that created you can move it to the new pc using a flash drive or email it to yourself and open it on the new pc and put it on your desktop and open thunderbird and import it. How to Export Your Outlook Contacts to a CSV File Mozilla Thunderbird FAQ your favorites for IE? or for firefox? this is where having xmarks on your pc and browser is a life saver and huge time saver, if you have your faves on another pc that you can access then I would suggest just getting xmarks installed on it and then on the new pc install x marks and sync it and voila everything is on the new pc. works in IE and firefox it is what I use on all of my machines and that way if I travel and use some one elses pc I can still access all my faves from anywhere by going to my xmarks page. This is an update to the sp1 info. Susan Bradley in the latest windows secrets newsletter said there are 2 new updates to do to prepare for sp1 if you have not done it yet, this is to help prevent some of those issues that were listed above. from her article Quote: "Microsoft released two patches to fix problems with Windows 7's infamous first service pack. Both should be installed before updating to Win7 SP1. KB 2533552 corrects a flaw that produces a failed SP1 update, leaving users with a cryptic error code (shown in Figure 1) and a difficult recovery. Systems that received SP1 through Windows Software Update Services were hit particularly hard, as noted in a TechNet blog. KB 2534366 fixes an issue with multiple language packs; some systems would hang at a black screen after SP1 was installed. If you haven't already successfully installed Windows 7 SP1, install both KB 2534366 and KB 2533552 first. And if Win7 SP1 is already installed, accept KB 2533552 for future service packs. Yes, it's true; I'm finally ready to give the all-clear for Windows 7 SP1 but only after you've accepted KB 2533552 and KB 2534366, as noted above. Can you find out what the alert windows says? I imagine that would help in determining the problem.

I had no problem loading Firefox on this laptop...and it also came with pre-instalLed Windows 7.

It would help if you said what the Alert notice said.

Did DH go to the Firefox download site and make sure he was downloading the version that is Windows 7 compatible ?

Yes, would need to know what the alert is and what the trouble is. What happens? UAC notice? Refuses to install or are you stopping the installation? Do you have 64 bit version of Windows 7? If so, get the 64 bit version of Firefox. I just installed it on my new machine and it works great and is finally a version of Firefox with acceptable speed for frequent use.
