New Windows 7 computer--Trouble installing FF

I know this belongs on the computer forum, but you gals are so sweet and helpful and this forum moves along much quicker!

DD has a new laptop with windows 7 and now hubby is having trouble installing firefox--an alert window comes up. Anyone have this problem and solve it?

OOhhh. I'm glad you posted! I am running XP service pack 3, but I know that some day, I'll have to move to Win7. Now, I wonder if there will be a problem with ThunderBird, my email utiltiy.

Its time to mosey over to the MicroSoft site to see if they have published a compatibility list for Win7, or maybe a list of known incompatibles.

As I understand it, all version of Windows up through Win98 tried to be backwards compatible with existing software. Legacy DOS programs were abandoned in XP. (There are some gurus who say they can make DOS programs work in XP, but with special techniques.) A complete break happened with Vista. Vista was a completely new operating system and a number of incompatibilites with older software occurred. I thought that Win7 was a remake of Vista to make it better behaved and I would expect software that ran in Vista should also run in Win7. However, I expect problems for software written for XP and older versions.

Go to the link below to review your software compatibility with Windows 7. When you arrive at this page, enter the name of your software in the box at top left.

Alternatively, you can search through the many pages by paging through page after page, but that's going to take a very long time.

It will be seen that there are many incompatibilites even with MicroSoft's own untilities written for earlier versions of Windows.

Interestingly, MS recommends that if you have a version for Vista, try that one in Win7. It may work.

So the problem does not seem to be the motherboard, you have a signal onscreen. Is the replacement motherboard identical to the one that failed? Did you simply pop the hard drive back in with the original Windows install on it? Do you have the CD that came with the newer mobo? (If not the drivers will be available online but expect slow downloads fro the Asus site if you use them) Have you tried putting the XP CD in the drawer and doing a repair to see if this will overcome the issues? Remember if you do this you will need to download and install every update and patch issued since the CD was created.

Thanks, I really depend on the excellent help I get here, it is appreciated. That said, I hope someone else using AT&T for an ISP and is happy pitches in. I am keeping for now to retain my email address, one I've used for at least 15+ years. Unfortunately, it appears AT&T is working on getting out of the ISP business (what, just wireless now?). They shut down the brand Worldnet, yet my 2.0 versions of Thunderbird address the "postoffice" and "mailhost" with "worldnet" as part of the address. But, it isn't working on my Thunderbird 3.0 version. I will try to figure something out tonight. My quick look last night at the AT&T help on the web said "pop and smtp with att.jahoo.com" was the magic. But that may be only if you use their DSL... not sure, seems strange. I have DSL form my local phone company, and it offers all the services Worldnet used to offer, I just am reluctant to change may address and lose contact with many I don't communicate with often... but AT&T is pushing me that way. I have all my personal email on Thunderbird, I use Outlook for business email. I suppose I can move the business email on to Thunderbird too (not as versatile as Outlook) but have not checked on how that is done. It appears one can't have two instances of Thunderbird on one computer. Maybe one can have one Thunderbird with multiple "accounts". I know Outlook provides for multiple accounts in one instance of Outlook, but I don't recall ever seeing anything like that in Thunderbird. Outlook is clearly the "industrial strength" email client... maybe Outlook Express has some of the same capabilities... I have never used it.

Probably need to make your Ubuntu bootable flash drive then do the Custom Install of win7 which will give you the clean the disk/format 1 large partion. After the install you can use the win7 disk manager to make any other partitions you might want. Win7 wants to be the first installed partitions. Usually it will automatically make a small hidden unlettered boot partition then C drive. If by chance it gives an option for sizes on the hidden boot partition, 100mb is default but kind of small if you have problems down the road.. 200 or 300mb is the size lenovo seems to like to make them. Its pretty easy to download Lenovo drivers.. just make sure for win7.. support.lenovo.com . Be nice to have those on hand incase your Lenovo has a special something that the win7 dvd doesn't have a generic for. It might ask you to insert driver disc !! Thanks everyone. mikie, that sounds a little complex. If necessary, I'll try it, though. An update... last night after posting here, I decided to try to get those Windows updates redone and out of 'stall' mode. So, what happened was the latest version of Windows 10 updated - it was a long one, took about an hour. After that, my computer is working like I think it should as far as speed with no lags. I haven't used it enough to see if that "HD Intel Graphics Display driver has stopped working and has recovered" popup happens again. So far it hasn't. While doing the Windows 10 update, I could see it was installing new drivers for quite some time, so I'm hoping that will resolve the issue. If not, it looks like I'll have to return it because it's really annoying to continually see this popup whenever I try to navigate the internet. I'll post back to report what happens. Thanks to you all for your help.

Can you find out what the alert windows says? I imagine that would help in determining the problem.

I had no problem loading Firefox on this laptop...and it also came with pre-instalLed Windows 7.

It would help if you said what the Alert notice said.

Did DH go to the Firefox download site and make sure he was downloading the version that is Windows 7 compatible ?

Yes, would need to know what the alert is and what the trouble is. What happens? UAC notice? Refuses to install or are you stopping the installation? Do you have 64 bit version of Windows 7? If so, get the 64 bit version of Firefox. I just installed it on my new machine and it works great and is finally a version of Firefox with acceptable speed for frequent use.
