Do you remember this when can drinks were first introduced?

"Mama,Mama,Mama, don't forget the super cooler

And the other super soft drinks

There in flat top cans

No returns and not deposits

No more empty in the closet

Mom, get super cooler in the flip top cans."

I don't like coffee; never did. I drink hot tea and ice tea, with sugar. Never did "like" water and drink very little of it. Used to be a Coca Cola drinker; some time ago I found Cheerwine, a cherry flavored soft drink, at Sharp Shopper. Much cheaper, and much like a cherry Coke. I converted, but now SS doesn't carry them any more because of the rise in prices. Most other chains have them though, and they are cheaper than Cokes, and I do buy them. I have to explain to a first-timer that it is not alcoholic, just like Mountain Dew is not Moonshine. Heard on the news yesterday that now caramel color is the culprit in soft drinks. Almost every afternoon I have a Carnation Essentials drink. They are good, and have a lot of what we need. My doctor says they are fine, keep drinking them. Whoa, if you get a degree in industrial arts you get to acquire carpentry textbooks along the way?!? Sweet! Kim, I've always enjoyed/appreciated your contributions; given the wisdom of trial and error that was behind them, I see why they stood out. My mom got us a couple of the Reader's Digest fixit books (have to run downstairs, one of them might be the very one you have); I like the way they are encyclopedic and detailed. I know Jane Powell but not the Small Houses books (do you mean The Not So Big stuff by Susanka, or the Small House anthologies from Fine Homebuilding?) Thanks for mentioning books; I think I might start a reference book thread for this forum. Hey Casey, THANKS for taking the bait. And you are NOT a bloody genius, you are an old house DEITY for crying out loud! Would you please start your own show on youtube? Or maybe just a house tour? Even Petch house has youtube videos. Or, do you already have a project blog and everyone knows about it but me? Actually for someone with a degree in historic preservation, I am impressed with how low-key your posts come across; they read more like an old friend who's "been there" and wants to pass along lessons learned along the way, it's really very nice and encouraging. But if you ever want to browbeat me feel free; I would take it as a compliment. To be honest if I post about something I'm thinking of doing to my house, and you don't opine, I figure one of two things is going on: 1) you're not on the forum; or 2) you're politely disapproving. Most of the time I assume it's 2 because you seem to be pretty consistent around here. But I just want to say, and I hope I speak for many, that I love love love your posts, especially when I'm searching on a problem I'm trying to solve and something from you pops up! (PS I finally got around to using that general finishes gel varnish you recommended and it was fantastic, thank you; I will post photos to the woodworking forum sometime before the next census.) Oh, and I love the way you "aged" the color tones in the new pine beadboard in your kitchen; reminds me of the pine in my grandmother's kitchen. When I was really little I used to look at the gleaming pores and think it was the closest wood could get to 24K gold.

Kaismom, I had the exact same path as you Pelligrino > Isi seltzer bottle > Penguin. Agreed the Isi bottle was a total waste, and as soon as I saw the Penguin I knew I had to have it! If you buy their soda flavors, buy small ones at first because they may or may not be to your liking. I didn't like them and I returned them all. But now it looks like they have better flavors and ingredients, like real sugar. But I like to make my own concoctions, with sugar syrup, ginger juice concentrate (just found that one!), frozen lemonade mix, mint leaves, etc. Yum. I like hearing recipes that others are using. Bobbbeig, (I like all the Bs, was tempted to add a few more...), I considered a setup like yours. Agreed it is far cheaper. In the end, once the Penguin came on the market, it was too easy to resist. Plus, I only go through a CO2 canister about every 6 months. But it's a good way to go if you are a high volume consumer of bubbly drinks.

Such an interesting thread. Shee, that is alot of coke and it is kind of scary when you do actually look at what is IN a coke. Whoever mentioned diluting tea with water, I may get my hubby to try that. He drinks alot of water, but I sometimes think he might be drinking too much tea. Yes, artificial sweetners do have an awful after-taste and they are not good for you either. I've never been into the fizz, or bubbles (although I did used to like Fresca!). There are some flavored waters I like. I didn't acquire a taste for coffee either (we don't even make it in our home unless it's for guests!), but I can get into a good flavored iced coffee. I'm not one that needs a "kick" of caffeine, and it is hard on my stomach. This thread had me thinking, I don't even think we have any "coke" (soda, pop LOL) in the house, unless there is a sprite somewhere, I do like to have that on hand in case of tummy issues. I was looking at a magazine yesterday that had some fruit juice summer drinks that looked tasty. I do like the chick-fil-a frosted strawberry lemonade and would love to find a low cal, healthier version.

OK, I confess...I remember it! I seem to remember the lyrics a little differently, but not enough to matter. What I remember most was, it wasn't very good.

My gran'ma used to call Koolaid "bug juice". Anyone else (besides Pattico, who has same grand'ma)ever heard that?

Speaking of Kool Aid, once i had a family dinner and served some blue Kool Aid for the kids. My sister's boy said, oh we're having 2000 Flushes! I'll never forget that!

That witty boy today is married with a small son and daughter, has his own home out in the country and has a good job working on diesel trucks and working on the family farm.

I don't remember the jingle, although I'm certainly old enough, but I'm glad to find out what bug juice is. A store in my home town still has a sign saying *Bug Juice. Freshly squashed.*

remember in the pepsi jingle that in the end of it the singer faded into the background as the commercial ended saying "nickel, nickel, nickel, nickel"

I think that it was mainly on radio that I heard it ... we didn't have TV until shortly after 1950 - a group of Univ. kids at that time, were bound over Christmas for a Student Volunteer Movement Quadrennial Conference dealing with overseas development, largely, in Lawrence, Kansas when, feeling loggy in late evening on a bus under coats, when the bus stopped at a roadhouse in MN, scarcely anyone felt like moving, until someone came back to shout in at the door, "They've got TV!!" ... and you should have seen the flying coats!

I was off this continent from '53 to '63, except for a year in Ithaca N.Y. in '57 - '58, when I didn't have TV.

I don't remember whether this jingle was used after the mid '60s ... but it's been a long time since one could buy Pepsi (or any other such drink) for a nickel!

If anyone had looked at me back then to say that, one day, stores would sell a bottle of plain, ordinary water (supposedly jazzed up a bit) for a price as high as we'd pay for a soft drink ... I'd have looked at him as though he'd taken leave of his senses.

And then ... if he told me that we'd pay more for water than for gasoline ... I'd have thought him gone really squirrelly!!
