When I was growing up in NYC, lots of people, mostly Italian men it seemed, kept pigeons on rooftops. This photographer is recording the relatively few flocks of collected and bred pigeons that are left, and his photos are gorgeous. See for yourself!

He says, "Once you view the flocks flowing and swirling high above Brooklyn, catching the shifting sunlight, you start to see the artistry involved." I would say his photography adds another dimension to the artistry.

Nice batch of pigeons.

Those birds would have a tough time in the city of Milwaukee. A number of years ago, pigeons were a problem for A. O. Smith, a manufacturer of frames for the
Ford Ranger pickup truck. The welded and primed frames were stacked outside waiting for final finish coats and painting. Pigeon do-do was causing bad spots in the finish and promoted early spot corrosion on the finished truck. This was only one example. Others involved cleaning public buildings and repairing corrosion caused by the pigeons. Also, occasionally a peddestain got crapped on and if he was irate enough, he might complain to city hall. A common citizen might not carry much weight with city hall, but when the captains of industry and operators of various summer festivals complained, they took note.

A.O. Smith had tried several deterrents; one that was partially effective was gas cannons that fired off on a random schedule, but the noise disturbed sleeping 2nd and 3rd shiftg workers and sleeping babies.

The city fathers installed a few nesting pairs of perguine falcons - pigeons are one of their favorite prey. The idea was sold to the public as a conservtion measure to bring back these falcons from the brink of extintion. Owners of tall buildings downtown went along with the idea and provided nesting alcoves for the falcons. The result was highly successful for contriolling the pigeon population.

We do have a few pigeon fanciers in the area, but they do not raise free fight birds in the city of Milwaukee. Breeders of racing pigeons locate their hutches outside the falcon nesting area. If they should race a bird through the city, they run a chance of loosing it.

Hover flies adore all my mesemb flowers. They don't seem to pollinate many of them though! Perhaps I'm just short on flowering pairs of compatible species. Here is one on L. pseudotruncatella v. elisabethiae. And two on Faucaria tuberculosa. My Frithias don't seem to be doing well this year. Possibly not warm enough for them to get moving and I may have been overwatering in anticipation of the normal strong growth. Or underwatering? Anyway, the first buds are coming but not great at the moment,

oooooo, love that Purple Tiger. Great Thorns on Dragon Wings! Oh, your Belinda's Dream is lovely and makes me miss the one I killed! I left it in a pot during our winter as an experiment, and unlike my potted Frederic Mistral, BD keeled over, dead as a doornail. So far FM has weathered 2 of our winters unscathed and green to the tips. Hehe, wow, your Ghislainde is very impressive. I think you should make it into a "tree rose" anyway, lol! My friend Jay-Jay from the Netherlands has this absolutely GORGEOUS Ghislainde de Feligonde Standard. It is STUNNNING! Ummmm, Tammy, that bee is not something to be happy about, unfortunately. That is the danged carpenter bee which will drill through wood. But I tolerate their presence so long as they don't chase away my honeybees. Some carpenter bees can get pretty territorial toward honeybees. Rose gardeners are constantly getting their carpenter bees mixed up with a true bumblebee. Anytime you see a striped fuzzy upper body, but a shiny black back, that is a carpenter bee.

Thank you roselee -- Several of us have been tossing this around. I thought at first that I had immature and mature birds of one species ... but when the presumed sharp-shinned showed up again, on 8-16-14 . . . I knew I must have two different species. Now, to figure out which of the two species nested across the street here, in 2013 . . . :-)

good eye! Thank you for that link, justgottobeme...I poked around on that site a bit and I believe it is TN flagstone. It is thinner than the fieldstone, and has a reddish/orangeish tone throughout. Makes sense that the real estate agent kept calling it "Tennessee River Rock." Shr probably heard "Tennessee" and that was all she remembered. Our plans are to clean it thoroughly (steam clean?) and then seal it with something not too glossy/slick. We are changing out the baseboards through the whole house. I love it...but I am curious as to how furniture will rest on it...it is pretty uneven and bumpy! Thanks again!

Wow, what great memories that brought back. When I was in 1st grade I got 25 cents a week to gather pigeon eggs and scrape pigeon poop for a guy who kept Tumbler Pigeons. As disgusting as that might sound I loved the job and was transported back for a wonderful moment while looking at all the photos.
