It's my birthday and I'll do what I wanna, right?

DS called and wants to take me out Monday, my 70th birthday.

My druthers, cause I love to cook, and seldom I get to have family. So I'd rather prepare dinner myself.

He and DW eat out all the time, and he so enjoys my cooking, I WANT to do this.

My menu, if he accepts my suggestion:

BBQ shrimp

corn on the cob with my speciality horseradish butter

Dessert: Death by Chocolate from local deli.

Then we will be at my place, as he said he wants to see my itinerary for upcoming trip, and I can relax after they leave.

Right? RIGHT!!!

I just moved to Santa Fe last fall, and I've been wondering the same thing. Last weekend I mixed compost innoculant into my compost bin, but I fear it might still be too cold for that to do any good. I've started raking leaves, and noticing where the trees and bushes have dead branches that could be cut out. I won't cut live branches until the new Spring growth starts up. I'm designing a rain barrel system, and collecting the parts to attach to inexpensive garbage cans, so that I can hope to keep my over-ambitious garden watered this summer. I've been collecting materials for building self-watering planters, as described in the Container Gardening forum. As the weeks wear on, it becomes an ever more complex engineering problem, involving float valves and such so that they really *are* self-watering. I've been re-potting, pruning, and propagating houseplants to keep myself busy and allow myself to dig in dirt (or faux dirt, anyway). Soon I'll start a few seeds, even though it's early, because I've decided to take my chances with germinating my collection of old seeds (some quite old indeed -- though experience has shown me that many old seeds will germinate just fine), and I'd like to see what's going to make it before it's too late to go get new ones, if there's something I can't live without. I'll also try my hand at propagating the indoor herbs from cuttings, because I've never done that, and a few more herb plants wouldn't be a bad thing. As for amending your soil, I'd guess it's not too early for that -- some amendments are best done well in advance of planting, anyway, so that things can settle in. There may be a couple of things that could be planted this early. Garlic and the like comes to mind. You could try radishes, which don't seem to mind the cold, but don't be too heartbroken if you lose them. If you build a cold frame, you might be able to start other cold-tolerant crops. I'm a college student majoring in dental hygiene and I just finished a course called microbiology. Basically the study of organisms only visible by microscopes. One thing we studied was the herpes virus. Like a few people have posted before me there is herpes simplex 1 and herpes simplex 2. My professor and textbook stated that herpes simplex 1 infects basically from the waist and up while herpes simplex 2 infects the genital area. On rare occasions they can both infect other areas but the outbreaks are milder because the virus is not where it naturally thrives. Both are highly contagious but they're actually the most contagious right before the visible outbreak of blisters occur. I still wouldn't advise popping the blister because of scarring though. If you happen to accidently pop it, immediately use soap and water to wash off the infected area so that you prevent the spread of the infection .

Tracey! What you are making is very similar to a Dobos Torte (in Hungarian "Drum Cake") without the Dobos ("Drum") layer. It sounds wonderful! If I may be so bold, you may want to take a look at the following link ad actually put the "drum" layer on the top. This is an amazing presentation and will knock the socks off the recipient and anyone else who gets a taste. Thank you to everyone who posted ~ My DS came over and the first thing he said was, "Nice hair, Mom. You look pretty hip". Gotta' love it! Lisa ~ I still have the funky glasses LOL, so you'd probably recognize me ;o) I agree about wearing current and up-to-date glasses. I find that if your glasses are "marmy", it makes you look matronly. That's the first thing I changed and updated a few years ago and I haven't looked back.

Absolutely!!

First, it is your Day and you should be able to do what you want to do.

Second, you can enjoy the time together there much more than in a restaurant.

Third, if you have dinner ready when they get there, they would surely have to stay and eat. Right?

Hey, Miss Glenda ... my DH's birthday is Monday, too .. he'll be 69.

Yes, it's definitely YOUR DAY and you can cook if you want to! Then you'll have a relaxing evening with your DS, DIL and DGS.

I've been getting the BEST sweet corn at the farmer's market the past week. We're pigging out on it, for sure!~ All too soon, it will be gone.

Yes, if you want to cook and host, you should do that. Compared to your own table, a restaurant is loud and crowded and you might be rushed out before you've had the time to visit the way you want. Of course he would never call and say "Hey, ma, how bout you make dinner for us on your birthday?" But when it's your wish, you should get it. Let him bring some wine if you want it.

Your cooking would be 100% better than any restaurant. Isn't it fun to plan for company? Wish I could do it more often. It motivates me to not only cook, but clean, clean, clean! Shrimp on the barby sounds so good. Enjoy the day!

Of course you can do what you want Glenda. You already know that.
And he shouldn't mind because you really aren't going to be slaving over a hot stove all day.
BBQ shrimp and corn on the cob is not exactly an all day cooking event.
You said you are buying the dessert so what's the big deal.
I'm sure that just the fact that he is coming to visit you is what you want most so just enjoy it.

Happy Birthday. August 3 was my parents' wedding anniversary. My dad always had his license plate with their wedding date: 831 935.

Now, Glenda, if your son wants to contribute something to the dinner, he can always be the bartender. Mai Tais, margaritas, mo jos, or whatever!!!!

What an unusual request for YOUR birthday dinner, but I can see that having your DS home to cook for again is what you really want, so let him know that...that should make him feel good, too!

Mothers NEVER quit wanting to do for their kids, do they? (Not even on their own birthday!)

Glenda you eat out every day as I recall. Do it YOUR way good Leo girl. You want what you want how you want it and why not? Cook on. It sounds good to me. I personally don't like to eat out so I for sure see why you want to eat in this one time on your Birthday so you can cook for somebody else as well as yourself and eat exactly what you want.
