Alright! I'm Heading South! Anyone want to Meet?

My son Aaron and I are going to be heading south in August. We will be staying in Ardmore, Oklahoma on the way down and on the way back. The exact dates are August 24th and September 3rd. Then we will be in Houston from August 27th until August 31st. Then.....we'll be in Austin from August 31st until September 3rd. Anyone want to have lunch or dinner in OK, Houston or Austin, let me know!!

Moni, we are going to stay at a hotel in Ardmore. My son gets a super discount but I really appreciate your generosity in the past! Will you be around in August?

I might can meet you in Austin for lunch. It's about 1 1/2 hours from my house. It will depend on if I get my chemo treatment that week and if I feel like driving that far.

I live in Wichita, you may pass right through there. Not sure where Houston is, but Wichita is on the way to Dallas.

GG- thank you for sharing those links with me! David- I think you have the most awesome set up- I love how neat everything is- all in rows :) The plants are just gorgeous! I agree with Kelly- MORE than impressive! Isn't it nice(or perhaps slightly weird) to know so many people are living vicariously through your photos?!? lol I've added another 5 Hoya just this past week, and my 'want' list is still a mile long! Hubs is starting to worry that I may have a hoarding problem. I told him it was okay until we could no longer use certain rooms of the house, then I would agree that I might have a *slight* problem. Thank goodness all this is giving him the motivation to get moving on building me a small greenhouse! Of course, he thinks that the house will be less 'plant-full', but we all know that it just means more room for more plants!

I'm 2/3 set....well, sort of. I'm still working on the hand made item, but I found the cookbook yesterday. Like many of you, I had to get 2 of them, one for myself and one for my partner. I'm still puzzling over the local item. I've found a nice locally produce item, but I'm not sure about shipping it. I'm going to do some more research. I've thought of other things, but Texas is a big state, and I'm not sure if the other side of Texas counts as local. Unfortunately, where I live the primary locally produced products are McMansions. I know I can spend as much as I want, but I'm NOT spending THAT much! LOL. Besides, that would definately be hard to ship! Sally

If you are going from Oklahoma City to Amarillo, Tx. on I-40 I could meet you somewhere in between. But, you may not be going that way. In Santa Fe we love to eat at The Shed, great mexican food and excellant margaritas. The Loretto Chapel is also worth the visit, it is where my son and DDIL got married and very interesting history about their staircase. I agree with the Cattlemens in downtown Oklahoma City. It has been there a long, long time. Have fun on your trip!

Jay, thanks for the Green site. I'll have to sit down and take my time going through it. marti8a, that is quite the house. It looks huge! It looks like they have implemented some good ideas, but the absolute true cracker style is very simple compared to that home, in the general style. However, whose to say if those early settlers were still around they wouldn't be trying something new, right? There were a few around with a cupola in the early days, but they don't seem to be common. We were going to put one on the house originally, but they can be hard to maintain and is another area for a potential roof leak. My husband said with the proper vents the house will perform the same as if it had a cupola. Some of the older homes have vents on the gable ends. I can't even imagine having a cupola with windows. I've seen a couple of them on modern versions of a cracker home. For one thing, who would ever want to clean the things? No one. So then you see dirty windows all the time. The other thing is the sun would be beating in and making the house extremely hot. There really isn't a practical way to cover them. Some cupolas do not have windows, but anytime you make a hole in your roof for something...... As people settled here from different areas they gradually brought some other styles with them. There are a few old homes in town that have been restored, and they have a more victorian look. There are also a few southern plantation styles that are old. The most common style still standing here is a two story "I" house with the added addition(s) on the back of the home. They had their kitchens outside the main living area for heat and safety reasons. They also added on as their families grew. The area that we live in is so cool because we can study these homes everytime we go into town or for a ride on back roads. We had a composting toilet in our "little house" (about 400 square feet) that we lived in while we built the main house many moons ago, when we were first married. I love the idea of composting toilets, and would have no problem with one in an outbuilding, but I didn't enjoy having one in my home. I'm not a squeemish person either. It made me feel like I had an outhouse in my house. They also have to be delt with properly or you can end up with odors, flies etc. I didn't get bugs in the house, but sometimes the venting fan froze in the winter and then pee you! The shower we build will most likely have a lip as well because the roll in ones can make a mess. I guess if one of us ever needs a wheelchair we'll have to remodel the shower. Hopefully, it'll never happen. My big thing is no shower door to clean and no shower curtains to deal with either. I'm still feeling really good about my loft. I won't be changing my mind again. hmmm Ardmore is about 2 hours past my town, on your route. Sure you don't want to meet for a meal in the OKC area?

Moonie, I would love to come to North Carolina! In October Ron and I will be most likely going to Washington State but maybe next year, The Carolinas! We have been considering where to relocate in a few years.

Oops, sorry Trisaw, I won't be going through Nebraska at all. I'll go straight south, through Iowa, Missouri, Oklahoma then to Texas. We just go right south on I-35.

Hey Moni, where are you exactly? I was just looking at the map and realized that Ardmore is way more than halfway to Houston. Maybe we'll stay closer to OK City. We are staying in Marriots because my son works there and gets a major discount! I'm sure they have one closer to you.

Like Moonie and Trishaw, SOUTH means this way:

Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina.

And any of these areas would be good if you are thinking of relocating!
