Another road trip - anyone interested in meeting?

Hubby and I are planning another road trip this fall. Last fall we drove out East and many of you offered suggestions on interesting places to see/visit. It was a great trip and we saw many of the places you suggested. I wonder if you would do the same for this road trip. Also, if anyone would like to meet for a lunch or dinner as we come through your State please let me know. If it is possible and we are close enough I would love to get together.

We will be leaving September 11 and probably spend two weeks. Here are the states we will be traveling through.

Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Missouri and Indiana.

Sounds like a great time to travel, and some good places. You're not coming to my area, but I have some suggestions on places to eat (restaurants):

Arizona - if you get to the Phoenix/Tempe/Mesa area in time for DINNER, find ORGAN STOP PIZZA in Mesa. Great pizza, but also wonderful entertainment. Everytime we visit my folks, we go out there.

New Mexico - in Albuquerque, Seasons Bar & Grill. Go upstairs to the bar for the less expensive (but still wonderful) food. In Santa Rosa, hit Santa Fe Grill.

Oklahoma - Sallisaw, go to Shad's Catfish Hole. It's 7.2 miles south of the freeway (I-40) but definitely worth the round trip. ALso only open for dinner.

Missouri - In Columbia, there's a place called Flat Branch. The wait for a table (even on a Monday) will be slow, but the food is very reasonable and very good. There are also a few places that I will recommend off the beaten track in MO, if you are going.

Well darn, you're going above us through Wyoming, and below us through New Mexico. If you'd just take the middle road through Colorado, you'd hit Denver and we could meet.

Irina,isn't 'Beachcomber' gorgeous? It was one of my first named violets. Mine is only about 9 inches across so I guess I could only grow 10 mnis in its place. Funny, after getting some minis on the trip, I have had those exact same thoughts a number of times. One does really use up a lot of space with larger standards. Rick-I really don't know what the trip cost. Part of it was spent in Canada, and they use monopoly money there, so I'll have to wait for the credit card bill. The primary intent was not a violet run. My niece and I try to take a trip every year. She comes from Seattle to Maine, or we meet somewhere. We had talked about Niagara a couple of years ago, and when she suggested it this year, I jumped at the opportunity. As far as prices, Fay is 4.00 per plant. VB is 4-5.00, I think minis and semis were 4 and standards were 5.00. LLG was 5.00 per plant, with a few being 6.00. The only thing I really kept track of was a total of 279.00 spent on violets. Sure, if I had mail ordered them and paid shipping, it would have been cheaper, but again there was a trip somewhere anyway. The nice thing about seeing the plant in real life is knowing exactly what the bloom looks like, and then deciding which plant you want. I tried to pick either the best flower, or the most symmetrical. Next year maybe we'll head south to Bluebird Greenhouse country. Or at least pass it on the way to somewhere. If I were to make a trip just for violets, it's definitely not cost effective by the time I figure my gas, and I'm too damned old to sleep in the van, and too lazy to drive all night. So it becomes not about saving money, but the experience of it all. I gather Rick that you are a long distance truck driver. I can see that a trip to the greenhouse might be kind of difficult with the trailer. It's not the getting in, it's the getting out, isn't it? But if you figure out a way, it's fun to do. Barbara

Connie - Did you throw out the back row of seats somewhere in Wisconsin? lol Where did you find room for more plants? I think you should've posted this on the discussion side. Maybe you could re-post it there. Involvement in the society tours - hosta, peonies or others are what make gardening a fun hobby. As long as I have been a member here Ken_Adrian has been advising members to get involved, join the clubs and volunteer. Like him or not folks - this is one piece of advice you should listen to. Lisa of Putnamgardens invited me on my first MHS garden tour in 2005 because her husband could not make it. I found myself volunteering at the leaf show a couple of weeks later because Lisa's friend Kim needed help and the rest is history. If you are not already involved in your local garden clubs I'm with Ken..... you should join, volunteer, have a lot of fun and meet new friends. If someone had told me 20 years ago I would be meeting people online, going to conventions and staying at their homes (Andrea's) and inviting strangers on bus trips and inviting them to my garden I would've thought they were smokin' something. Felix, wave at Jason & Jenny when you go. Their house backs up to the gardens. It takes me 2 hours to get from my house in Sanford to their house, for those interested in time issues. Of course, I don't live where I can get on I-75 until I'm just past Ocala, so that makes a difference. I go up through the Forest almost to Silver Springs before I hit it. Marcia (who MIGHT be going)

It took me a while to find this, and I had to do some odd searches to finally find it! Anyway, I did want to respond... IdaClaire - yes, I am somewhat of a compulsive story-teller, and when I was in First Grade, I won first place in the UL story-telling contest. I had to look up David Sedaris, but he does sound inspirational. I've always wanted to write in the style of James Thurber, which I think is somewhat similar. Anyway, I have to thank for this comment because it has gotten me back on the short story collection I was working on. I had started to write my autobiography, not because I think my life is special, but several friends have asked me to do this, including Dolores Deluxe, who is an actress and also an author. I met her in San Francisco in 1974 when I was living in a theatrical commune where she was rehearsing a play that some of my roommates at the time were in. Our commune was in a storefront on Valencia street that had been a dance studio before, and so it had one cavernous room with 8' high mirrors and ballet bars. I recently saw Dolores again at one of her book signings, and then we had lunch near her bungalow in Venice on the beach. I have her autobiography and thought that I should try to write something similar, but that really didn't work for me, but when I read your post, I got the idea that all I need to do is get a collection of short anecdotes - something that would be much easier for me to do. I've decided that they do not need to be sequential, and I can try to make sense or order out of them after I've finished writing them. BTW, when I was at Rice, I took Larry McMurtry's creative writing class and got an A in it. I was told that some of my writings were Kafkaesque, which I did agree with, but those were especially the ones I wrote in high school and college. They tended to be a bit surreal. 3katz4me, you would have to fly your cats to Palm Springs, which is Cathedral City adjacent. I just had my pool resurfaced, and it has new equipment as well, and the heater works well, although I certainly don't need that in the summer. In September the water temperature was 85° without using the heater. I'm going there this week-end to do some more work on the house.

Lee, I'm finally feeling better and I'll be able to meet you for lunch soon :) As soon as my kids go back to school we'll have to plan something. I'll give you a call in mid-Sept.

Donna, I second that recommendation on Seasons in New Mexico. I haven't been to the one there, but their other restaurant is in Durango, Colorado and it is one of the best restaurants we've ever been to.

Donna, Thanks for the info on restaurants. We will be visiting them if our path takes us close.

Lee, We were going to come into Colorado as I have a friend living in Parker. It still may happen, we'll see.

Going through OKC, you should take the Agnew/Villa exit, and head south (Agnew, Villa goes north) and go to the Cattlemens Restaurant.

Great steaks.

And of course, as you get close to OKC you have quite a few Braums Icecream Stores to choose from. GREAT Ice Cream!

Braums headquarters is located in Tuttle Oklahoma, and they go only as far as a truck can travel in one day, there and back.

Thus, on the west it is in Amarillo, and the east just shy of Little Rock.

Dlynn, I've been thinking about you and am glad you're better. I know how busy your life is with your very active boys. I'd love to meet for lunch - I can come up your way too.

Karen, our son and DIL live in Parker. I hope you change your plans and I'm sure your friend does too!

If you are going to go though Santa Fe and Taos, (the high road between SF and Taos is a really beautiful drive), I'll have some restaurant ideas too. Your trip sounds wonderful.

Karen, will your travels be bringing you anywhere close to Kansas City? Of course I'd love to meet you if it's possible.

Your trip reminds me of a six week trip we took right after September 11, 2001. What I remember about that time was the panic and long lines at the gas pumps. Whew! (I'm having a Mercury Retrograde moment.)

I have no doubt you'll have a great time, filled with many new memories.

If you are going from Oklahoma City to Amarillo, Tx. on I-40 I could meet you somewhere in between. But, you may not be going that way.

In Santa Fe we love to eat at The Shed, great mexican food and excellant margaritas. The Loretto Chapel is also worth the visit, it is where my son and DDIL got married and very interesting history about their staircase.

I agree with the Cattlemens in downtown Oklahoma City. It has been there a long, long time.

We are very eager to do a road trip but I am frustrated that Ray can't won't leave his team for more than a week at a time.

I am always up for a GREAT steak, or even an ice cream. But with my work schedule it is hard to plan getting together with someone.

If you let me know, when you come through OKC, I'll see what I can do.

In Columbia, MO, the place for ice cream is either Andy's or Randy's. Culver's isn't too bad, either, though that's fro yo rather than ice cream.

Thanks for the compliment Cathy. I hope when we come down to Florida this winter we can get together with you and Ray again.

Lou, Sorry that we aren't coming your way, we certainly had a great time out East and our visit with you.
