sometimes freecycle just drives me crazy..do you freecycle?

I have something to offer...If you wanted it wouldn't you keep communications open?

First of all I made this offer...I got several responses...I chose a guy who was here in town because I felt since he was closer he would be sure to pick it up...

I emailed him three times...he wanted to come when he got off work after ten o'clock at night...I don't want anyone coming here that late..I told him no. For one thing everyone but me is asleep at that time. And someone coming up on the porch will set the dogs off and wake everyone up.

I told him sometime during the day on Friday or Saturday but to let me know. He didn't. So I emailed him Saturday again and told him if he didn't want it I was going to reoffer. Well he decided he couldn't make it. Fine...

I reoffered. I've gotten about 20 replies for it...I drew a name to make it fair..I emailed her...she wanted to know the address so she could come get it. I sent it to her...she said she would come when I send address.

I emailed her , told her it was in the email she just read.

I emailed her early this morning and just now..

I want to know a yes or no....I don't want to save it for anyone for days...if they want something free they should get off their duffs and get it or if they can't they should let me know...

Take it to the thrift store. Craigslist is much better than freecycle IMHO. I joined freecycle years ago, and canceled after the first week - it was just too crazy for a slow operator like me.

Isn't that just the most frustrating thing? We Freecycle and offer free on Craig's list quite a bit, with the same struggle, Patti ... NO_SHOWS!

We live out of town, so I don't feel it's fair to people to just set something out on the driveway and say "first come gets it," but I'm about at that point. Tough cookies if they have to drive extra miles, I'm tired of penning up the dogs, sitting and waiting ... and waiting ... for someone who doesn't have the decency to show up when they say they will, or call and tell me they're running late or can't make it.

Oh! and the ones who want me to DELIVER a free item to them, because they don't have gas money????? It's one thing to want something large and you don't have a truck ... but a bag of clothes? Will you bring it to me because I can't afford gas? GET REAL.

Karen, thanks for your generous offer of advice on Ebay Selling! When I get it together a bit better, I'll be contacting you for sure. I have threatened for 5 years to sell on it, but just haven't gotten set up with PayPal mainly, plus the other thing I sorta worry about is doing that first Check Out, I'd hate to screw that up! I have a score of 100 and have made purchases exactly 100 times since 2002, but have never sold yet, but at least I'm established well enough for buyers to "trust" me ... do they dare lol. The main thing that is preventing me now is that I'm not organized enough to run it properly as a small business. I really want to keep up with my profits (hopefully no losses!). My daughter is moving very soon, and all her furniture that is filling up my basement, and causing me to be unable to get to my stuff, will finally get moved. They are in the process of looking at houses now. Should be out of here soon, but in a nearby neighborhood! I can't wait to get my bathroom and bedroom back again! It's been 6 months now. Congratulations on your new machine, Patti!! Hopefully, it'll turn out to be something fairly simple and inexpensive to have repaired. I have a weakness for the older machines--they were so much better made. Silly, but it makes me feel sad to see any at Goodwill or yard sales, because I know if only the 'right' person would come along and buy it, how much it would be appreciated. Instead, there it sits, for sale, probably played with by every child who walks along (as well as a few adults!) :) My best friend got a free serger off freecycle--still in the box, never opened! From a young man. I suspect it may've been his mother's, or maybe he'd just gone through a divorce? The serger worked perfectly. My friend uses it all the time.:) She stays busy knitting and sewing preemie baby things to donate to Parkland hospital in Dallas.

I personally love freecycle even with some of the hassles of it. This past weekend I posted that I was digging out some hardy hibiscus plants and one lady that had been here before wanted some. She even offered a trade for me. She brought me 88 hot pepper plants and enough starter pots to fill a 55 gallon barrel. Then on the sale deal I had two people ask for starts of the hibiscus. One had been here before so she knew where I live. She emailed me back after I told her yes I would love for her to have one. She stated that gas was to tight and to pass it onto the next person. Nice of her to email me back, however she shouldn't have asked in the first place. I have been wanting to make a potting bench with an old sink. The other day someone posted that they had one that was 1970's vintage green with some countertop still on it. It is perfect for my project. I will get a stopper for the left side of the sink for when I am using it for potting starter pots. Then I can pull the plug and let the soil go into the bucket I will store under it for potting soil. I love Freecycle, but I've always had people meet me in a public/neutral place when I gave them things. I've given away crafting/scrapbooking supplies, wheel well trim from DH's truck, a huge mirror, kitchen items, a computer monitor, the living room rug from our house on base, etc. I've received a wonderful 1952 Pfaff sewing machine complete with walnut cabinet, a portable sewing machine, and three travel DVDs. I also received three pairs of almost new jeans that fit my oldest brother, and several sweaters and a coat that were perfect for my aunt who desperately needed them. Again, I've always asked people meet me somewhere other than at my home. I think Freecycle is great, and it keeps many unwanted items out of the landfills. I do try to be cautious; I'm sure a lot of internet groups has their kooks...except for us, of course!!! LOL

I quit freecycle this spring , I got so tired of the no shows. The moderator said "just say it is out front". OR NOT!! Like I want people out here? No way!
When I said I was leaving, the moderator asked what I had that hadn't been picked up as she might want it! So done with them! Craigs list might work, but I would just rather take things to the thrift shop in town and be done with it. Kathy

Just this week, up here in Canada, one woman who said she was a single mom and absolutely needed a car to get her child to and from school (yea, right) and was promptly offered a free car by a member....well she went and had a look-see and turned the offer down as it had a wee-bit of rust. Hello, it was free. Well needless to say, the person who made the offer felt bad and posted another message saying if it was so bad, how come she was able to sell the same car the next day through the newspaper.

I guess it takes all kinds to make the world go round, eh?

I found the same thing out, Pattico, and quit shortly thereafter. I thought it would be good to just give an unwanted or unneeded item rather than have a person buy it at a thrift store.

But no more.....I tried, and as already said, one wanted it delivered another complained about an item. I'm done.

BTW--I have found the same thing when I have given away a trip either for radio or a charity. The winners have been impossible so I just don't do it any longer.

I use Craigslist Free forum. What drives me crazy is people don't get back to you. I have sent out lots of emails and no reply. Either when I want something or giving it away. And also, if it is gone why not delete the ad. That drives me crazy too. Why keep something posted if it is no longer available. I always remove my ad right after it is gone. People!!!

We offered our above ground pool on craigslist, free to anyone who would take it apart. Two guys showed up, took the deck and fence only, never came back for the pool. We ended up paying someone $250 to take it apart and away.

I just heard a bit on the radio today that people advertise their backyard fruit on Craigslist, for very little or for free. Learn something new every day!

I've given some things away on Freecycle.. didn't have any problems with no-shows. Just recently I put some things on Craigslist - sold a picture for $100. that didn't get any bids on eBay at $40! - also had some ladders that a guy was interested in, but he hasn't called back even after my DH volunteered to drive them half of the way.

I have noticed a lot of free ads on Craigslist that say "at curb" - a good idea if you don't want to be waiting around all day for someone to pick up an item.
