My $130. Bedroom Redo (Pictures)

The walls are the same color - a light purple. You can't really tell in the photos.

I bought the comforter set a couple months ago from JCP. Painted my furniture last week... DH kept calling it goth furniture, but decided he liked it once it was all done. The window above the bed was a garage sale find for $1.00. I bought some of the UNI-POSCA pens (what car dealers use to write on glass) to trace the designs onto the glass (it comes off with rubbing alcohol IF I decide to take it off). I made the memory frame with some of my DGM's jewelry and photos to replace a older brown framed one. The candlesticks and the "yard long" rose picture were garage sale finds too (for $5.00!). I decoupodged the hamper with "Blanchisserie", which I "hope" is French for laundry!

I am pretty happy with the transformation. It'll save us having to buy new furniture for a few more years.

Looks like the lamp shade matches the comforter. How did you do that? I can't read the lettering in the window; perhaps you'll translate?

BTW, blanchisserie means "dirty socks" in French.

I think it is awesome!!! I love it. I saw that bedspread in a sale book and fell in love with it. I just don't have a place for it right now.
When you painted the furniture did you have to sane it first? It looks like a satiny finish on it. If it isn't too much trouble will you please give detailed instructions on what you did? I have a china cabinet I've been wanting to do something similar to and have been wonderng how much trouble it is going to be.

First of all, please don't take offense to my "fussiness"! :) I have a friend who is an interior designer and she has tried to teach me a thing or two because I need help all the time! I'll start with the dresser. I agree with too much stuff on the dresser. To me it would look much better without the boat and the jar of rocks is way too tall and out of scale. Maybe put the wooden box next to the two candles and the picture by itself on the right side, and take the boat and rocks out completely. Think about the "weight" of the items and try to balance your arrangement. I always use the rule: "one, three, but never two" for groupings. Its the same in landscaping...amazing what a difference it makes. I would also paint the dresser black. Other suggestions I would make is to paint the ceiling area where the red chair is the same color as your walls. If your space allows I would reposition the chair so that it is not stuck angled perfectly in the corner, and I would remove that little table and put it to the right of your bed with a lamp on it, because your bed with window looks a bit out of balance, and the little table just looks out of scale in the chair area and as if it doesn't belong there. Also might think about painting the little table one of your accent colors. If you're going to use cream, white, and green in there I would stick with black or deep chocolate as another accent color and forget red altogether. It would be nice to see something in the room that wasn't "square", ...maybe something round on the wall like a big clock. Maybe the red is throwing me off. You have not repeated it anywhere else in the room so the room is not tied together. I think with accent colors you need to repeat them two or three times. Your black frames look great in there. Black is a good accent color for the room. Don't know about the red at all. With your green pillows it looks like you are trying to go "monochromatic" and the red throws it totally out of kilter. Maybe you have nothing else to use like most of us so could even look into draping the chair with something or also cushion covers. Sorry don't mean to tear your room apart! It's lovely. Sometimes just changing a few things can make all the difference in the world! That's just my two cents! Good luck! You're doing a great job! :)

Believe it or not, decent looking ceiling fans exist. On every design show I've ever seen they're the first things to be thrown out, but I have them in every bedroom. Mmm slight draft at night without the sound of floor fan... I pspent no fewer than 18 weeks looking (off and on) for a "pretty" one to go in my master. I have lived with a 4 poster bed. My experience - unless you have really high ceilings, and I'm talking like 10 ft, and a sizeable room, it will turn your space into... tiny. Once upon a time in a previous life I thought I had a big bedroom until I put a poster bed in there. I like your computer nook. I always wanted a space like that, which I could separate from the rest of the room with some romantic drapery tied back. I might force that idea on my formal dining room. :) beds/headboards coverin ga window do bother me. I don't like anything to cover a window (couch, table, or otherwise) -- but that's just me. And if it came down to a queen bed, or covering that window, sure - the window would get covered! We have single panels on our two bedroom windows, mostly because they're skinny and it looked silly to me to have two panels. If you need to cover the window, something that seems to help (at least when I've seen it done) is to pull the bed away from the wall a foot or so. Then you can go with two panels, and it looks kind of intentional instead of "didn't have space." Something else to keep in mind with blocking windows -- does the sun come directly in such that it would fade your bedding over time?

The palest turquoise or a couple of shades lighter ... it's light and you can work with it all kinds of ways. Bring the purples in as accessories. Or a very pale clear yellow, which matches nothing in the bedding, but is a good contrast and a flexible color.

sandra, I will say again, I think your room is beautiful. I only suggested changing some things when you mentioned the tv, because this is coming from an avid tv watcher, and from past experiences we have slowly learned where the best place is to put the tv - ha. Our last house our bed had such a high footboard that we could not see the tv in a reclining position. Here's probably a really crazy idea, but I'll just throw it out there, and feel free to shoot me down at any time. What if you moved the bed and lamps to the wall that would face the wall where your console and little prints are now. You could either install a tv bracket on the wall so you would be able to watch the tv from the bed, or use the console table and center the tv. I would say you could center the console table in front of your window drapes, but that might make it too cluttered. If tv is not a necessity, I wouldn't change a thing, except fill in the wall a bit with more art or accessories, like suggested previously.

Alisande - I had bought the toile shade on clearance a couple years ago, it doesn't match exactly.. but close enough. "Dirty Socks" is pretty accurate! lol The lettering says Hotel de 'my last name with a little french apostrophe'.. then Paris in smaller letters.

Linda - I was very lucky that DH and I had stained the furniture when we bought it 20+ years ago... but we never put any varnish or poly on it... so the black semi-gloss went on like a dream. I don't know if I would have attempted it had I needed to sand first. There is a lady named Linda on the antique forum that can most likely give you instructions on how to remove the old finish. She's pretty knowledgable about refinishing.

What a great job! I especially like the window. I have done about 6 of them. I buy the old windows from eBay and I have used Sharpie markers and glass paint. I love the new look a lot! Way to go!

I am SO impressed, Lydia! I knew a re-do was in the making, but I had no idea it would be this wonderful. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the black furniture, it really makes a statement in that room. In fact, black works well in any room, I think. I have a lot of black right now in my craft room and I like it. (I don't like how it shows dust, but I'll just have to dust more often.) It really pops against the lime green walls, though.

That bed set is perfect and what a deal, you are the Queen of Frugality and I mean that in the most nicest, most flattering way possible.

That hamper is just the icing on the cake, too! I bet you had a blast coming up with everything. Now, what room is next? Do you hate to be finished? I know I'm always disappointed when a big job is finished, I want to keep going.

Lydia..WAY TO GO! Don't you just love the challenge of making everything old...new again? You can tell a lot of thought & toil went into your 'labor of love'. Thanks for showing us the end results! Can't wait myself, to get my DGD's Princess room done-next month in PA! Thank goodness my son has a real 'puter, so will be able to post the pics from there.

I love it!! I would have never thought of black, but that gives me ideas for an old white painted bedroom suite I have.
I was just going to have some roses painted on it. I may change the color completely now. I think you did a fantastic job, and I love the fact that you did it on the "cheeep"!!!

I love your Goth (snort) room! We have two armoires in our room I've been thinking about painting black to match our black iron headboard. Now I see yours, I really want to. You did a great job, girl!! Love the "Hotel" picture above the bed.

What is the long hanging thing just to the left of the bed (looking at the bed)? That's a metal cup/saucer holder that holds 4 of my old cups and saucers.

Vicki - I use Sharpies a lot, but didn't think they'd work on glass. Good to know!

Flamingo - I wasn't sure about the black because of the dust issue. I have a black top to my computer desk and am always cursing it. lol 'Queen of Frugality' - I'll take it!

Sharon - can't wait to see the "Princess Room"!

Marilyn - I love white furniture and the shabby chic cottage look, but there was already so much white in the room (and a lot of that is the bright Walmart spray paint white lol).. so I took a chance on the black. I'm glad I did.

WOW WOW WOW WOW!!!! It looks fabulous and can you believe you accomplished all of that for 130.00...You da magic worker!! I've been painting like a fool the last month...and black has worked it's way in major big time...I'll make a thread later on...I've been wanting to paint a bed black...now I'm really inspired...(but it's my father in law's bed that he was born in and it's approaching 100 years old...DH would probably have a fit...but it strips off...right?)

Good job,i like the black as well.Don't know if they still sell it but India ink works well on glass also.
Love that bedspread !!

I re-did my room last october and also did it for under 150.00,i didn't paint my furniture though,just the walls ,and got new bedding,made a new swag curtain,and for art i blew up my garden pictures on the computor.

Mscsippy,i re-did an old 60's cedar chest early this year and i did sand that.It wasn't hard.The top was a little harder,because it had that veneer finish on it,but i still wouldn't say it was hard.It turned out well.I took it from a very light grey,almost white to a mahogany.

So pretty. Isn't it amazing how you can change things for such a small amount of money? You have outdone yourself. I am not a black person but am slowly changing my mind. I have used a little here and there and I can say it is so looks so good.

I am going to redo our bedroom when my hubby goes hunting this Fall. I have already started buying what I will need. My 2 daughters are going to help.. I am really looking forward to doing it. It just gives a person a new lease on life...
