so sorry to hear about your grandfather...we've been very lucky with my aunt. while my uncle dosn't dare leave her alone anyomre, when i called she knew exactly who i was...(she's taking those altz meds...)

i certainly wouldn't worry about the music...amazing grace is such a wonderful hymn...and so comforting...i envy you your ability to play an instriment...and what a lovely way to remember your grandmother with...have a safe trip...

I am so sorry for your loss. It is hard when that person has been in your life for so long and is such a strong tie to you.

I think that is wonderful that you are playing the flute at your grandmother's service. When my maternal grandmother passed away, my mother asked me to play at her service (I'm a pianist). At first I said no - I just didn't think I could do it - and then I remembered all those years growing up after I learned to play when she'd come over and say "Brenda Kaye, go play me something on that piano." I'd gripe and complain and do it grudgingly (and because mother made me - lol) and MeMaw would say "If I could play that thing, I'd wear the ivory off those keys." So I did play at her service, and I'm so glad I did.

You won't regret it, and you'll do fine - I can just hear that flute now ......

Oh, Stephanie--my sympathies!

I had to sing at a funeral once (I'm the church organist, and there was a solo section to some hymn). Even though it wasn't someone I was close to at all, funerals are always very emotional for me. It took some fierce concentration to not let my voice go. I know someone else who said that she concentrated on something mildly annoying, and then she didn't get emotional while she was singing.

My neighor lady used to tell me her husband was just out running an errand, ad he'd be back soon; I always wondered what I should say--remind her he's dead, or just sort of agree w/ her. I only had casual conversations w/ her, sporadically, so I just kind of agreed, but I wondered what her doctor would have said. If I were you, I'd want some advice from grandpa's doctor about what to say.

Stephanie, I am sorry for your loss. You and your family are in my prayers.

When my grandmother passed away, my cousin, who had not played her guitar in years, played at the funeral. She sat in a side room, open to the main room the rest of us were in, as she played. I am not sure she could have managed it otherwise. She did beautifully, and so wil you. What a wonderful tribute to your grandmother, and a wonderful memory for you, in the future.

Grandma's favorit hymn was Amazing Grace. It is one that my cousin played at her funeral. To this day, I have problems hearing & singing it. Usually, the only way I can get through it, is to sign it as I sing it.

I will follow my father's lead in how to respond to anything my grandfather might say/ask.
I've been practicing and am satisfied, as long as I can hold myself together.
