Here is the first place we stayed in Germany. It's in Beilstein on the Mosel River:

The second picture makes my back hurt! I could never make it up those steps.

One thing to note is that pork/pigs have been bred for lean meat in the last few decades in the US, but NOT necessarily in EU/Germany. So the wonderfully tender pork you may experience in the EU is not the same and cannot be replicated into recipes in the US. Just an FYI, in case one thinks the EU has stellar pork cooking techniques (which they may), but not as much as you might think. Think of prime US beef ribeye (fatty) vs. choice NY strip (fairly lean) and you'll get the idea.

Mtnwomanbc, it was the hotel St. Louis-Marais. The staircase in their picture looks wide, but it's actually very narrow and kinda slanted. The carpet on it was filthy. We weren't too far from the river and Notre Dame. Danielle, that was the girl's room. Three of us stayed in there. The boys had their own room on the main floor. The only rooms in Europe that accomadate 4 people are the youth hostels. They occationally had triple rooms, like this one so to make it cheaper, Judy, my co-worker shared with me and Lauren. I don't ever plan on going back. The whole area where we stayed smelled like urine. It was gross.

Zeetera, yes I drove everywhere we went...well except for once we found our hotel in Paris. No way was I driving there until I absolutely had to. What a nightmare coming and going. I love to drive so it wasn't too bad, just tiring by the end of the trip. Judy, who came with us didn't drive until the last couple days she was there. I tried to get her to drive us out of Paris but she wouldn't do it-LOL! It only took us a couple hours to find the highway out. Most of the driving wasn't too bad, but there was a lot of construction going on and tons of traffic near all the major cities so it was a lot slower than I had planned at times. They have rest areas all along the autobahn in both Germany and France with clean bathrooms, most have restaurants, park like areas too, lot of Burger Kings too. It was really confusing around Hahn airport/former U.S. base where I was stationed. They had made one of the main roads (50) into a four lane divided highway and 327 seems to have been broken up into more than one section of road, so I kept getting lost and having to refer to the map. Otherwise it wasn't too bad and can be fun driving over there.

I'm with Glenda...I would never make it up those steps. Did you have to carry your luggage up them? It is very beautiful there. I have always wanted to go to Germany. I will probably never make it...so thanks for letting me tag along with you.

Those steps look like a killer. lol The place looks enchanted otherwise.

Those stairs were a killer, everywhere we went had stairs. Yes, we took our "luggage" up those stairs but we took backpacks and I knew we'd be going up and down places like that so one backpack per person is what we took.

Hi, Kathy. I sure wish I had known you were so close to us. We could have met for coffee. I used to live right across the river from Beilstein in Ellenz. The Castle was the view from my living room windows.

Oh, Kath! What beautiful photos. I love that place and your balcony is just wonderful, so enclosed and secret and cozy. The flowers everywhere, lovely! I love those stairs, after living in flat Florida, anything on multi-levels just thrills me.

Look at that crusty bread! Yum. I'm so glad you're sharing the photos with us. You'll have some wonderful memories of this picturesque trip.

Lovely pictures, Germany is a beautiful place. My one son in law was born in Germany and they have been back twice. His Grandparents visited a couple of times and the one time stayed here in Indiana several months. They didn't speak English but we so enjoyed having them here for Christmas and other family gatherings. Your pictures are very nice.
