Questions about acrylic nails

I never gave any thought to getting acrylic nails until now, as my nails are naturally strong and I could wear them any length I liked. But for the past few years I've had so much damage from Raynaud's in the winter that some of my nails (about half of them) grow in deformed. Then as they grow out, the misshapen parts fall off.

I'm so tired of looking at this ugliness (and trying to hide it), and I'm wondering if it could be covered with acrylic nails until it all grows out. Or do acrylic nails need to be applied on a smooth base?

How long do they last? Also, I've seen some fairly natural looking acrylic nails that I liked a lot, but I don't want the very thick, very squared-off nails that some technicians do. How would someone go about finding a salon that matches their taste?

Thanks!

Susan
