Wonderful hummingbird photos and videos!!

I ran across this guy's site at DPReview. He shoots a Canon 7D. He wrote:

Some Hummingbirds recently built a nest at a nearby golf course. I had never seen babies before, and because of their location next to the parking lot, they were quite acclimated to human presence and allowed me to "paparazzi 'em" :-)

I haven't looked at the whole site yet, but the opening pic is fabulous. The site apparently it includes a slow-motion video of the father hummer flying in to feed the babies.

It is incredible! Buuuuuuuuuuuut.....that's a female feeding her babies.....:0) Males don't help out with babies. Females have speckles on their throat.

Vickie - I would highly recommend Adamas. It blooms like crazy and multiplies very fast. Val - I purposed didn't make them too wide so I could reach the blooms without breaking off buds or scapes. Ellie - I'm glad you liked Bewitching Eyes. It was an impulse bid on the Lily Auction. The opening price was so low I couldn't resist, and no one else bid on it. I really liked the first bloom and I hope it will continue to have similar blooms even when it's hotter. Chris - I think Ruby Lipstick has only had one bad bloom in five weeks. The blooms are always fully opened and perfect when I go outside at about 6:30 a.m. Yes, that is cardboard under the raised bed. It's all those Priority Mail boxes that my new daylilies were shipped in, plus a couple more boxes. Debra

Helen - My camera's on auto most of the time too. I've never used some of the special features that it has. I do use the zoom feature, which I used for the hummingbird photo. If I get too close and try to zoom, it won't focus. On my camera, I zoom in closer, push the button down half-way to set the focus and then push it down all the way to take the picture. If it doesn't look focused on the screen before I click, I know that I've tried to get too close. If I can get only a few inches away from my subject, I can switch my camera to macro, while the other settings are still on automatic, and I use that for taking a photo of something small. For the monarch photo below, I didn't zoom in. I just held the camera very close (about three or four inches away) and used the macro feature. It wasn't moving so that helped. lol If I try to take a picture of a hummingbird with my zoom lens when it's moving its wings, it's pretty blurry. I think I may be able to use the manual settings on it to adjust the shutter speed but I don't know how to do that. lol I have a Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-H3 that I just bought this year for around $320. It has a 10X Optical zoom and 8.1mp. I bought a Panasonic Lumix before Christmas and returned it because the pictures weren't good at all. I don't see the same model that I got on Best Buy's website so maybe they've updated it already. The one below is very similar and is $279 on sale. Oh Dorothy...I can relate to your needing help on taking out your decorations each season. I have mine stored in the attic. Even though I can easily walk into it , I still have to haul it down the stairs and then back up when I have to put it all away. I was just telling DH last night, Do you think we'll be hiring someone to do this job for us one day!! lol...it's not easy. jane

Glad you liked them. The pictures are so big I began to lose sight of exactly how small hummingbirds are.......until that fly showed up for perspective!

Nicole, maybe the photographer, being a man, wanted the father to get credit. LOL

Those are wonderful. I like that he photographed the tree from different views, his camera setup and himself with the hummers. I also have lots of hummers but have never seen a nest.

Kay, I'm sure if you Bookmark that site you'll be able to come back to it over and over. I don't imagine he'll take it down any time soon.

I just showed the pictures to my co-workers, who were enchanted with them.
