My less than 1- & 1-year old bulbs - photos and video

I don't mean to dis the grower who posted their amaryllis growing video on YouTube, but I got the camera out tonight and decided to uproot a few bulbs just to see what I had.

Here is an Exotica x Red Pearl seedling that I planted in May this year. The seeds were probably sown in February. I used my super delux homemade mix of 10 parts potting soil, 5 parts coarse sand, 3 parts Perlite, and 2 parts decomposed granite. They get morning sun and are hit by the sprinkler 3 times a week plus they get rain (they are in bunny hutches and bird cages to protect them from squirrels and raccoons. As you can see the bulb is already the size of my pointer-finger nail. This bulb is just 7 months old.

To see if this was a fluke, I uprooted a President Johnson x Gordie to see how big it was...same thing. This one is about the size of my thumbnail.

Here is a Vittatum self from seeds that were sown last July 2008, so it's 14 months old. Compare that to the 1 or even 2 year old bulb from the YouTube video!

AND here is my Gordie Self that I sewed about the same time. I unpot it in the attached video...but the video stopped just as I was going to show the bulb!

It's at least 13 cm and alread has an offset! Growing in a 3.5 inch pot.

These bulbs really are thriving....and sadly the grower's video isn't promoting their business to anyone on the list, but it is educational for the general public hobbyist.

I have attached the video. I posted it in my PhotoBucket acct. I have great luck playing it...but then, maybe because it's big, my computer seems to lock up. There's no virus...just be warned!!

Guess Hippis just love to grow in Spring!

Yeah!!! That's a lot more what it should be like, not what we see in the other video. They have a good root system and the plants can benefit from it, and it shows!

Please post some photos of these sedlings. To make things practicable and comparable I would plant them all into 50cm balkony boxes, 10 per box in 2 lines x 5 bulbs. (You can place these boxes everywhere and accomplish your comparative environmental observations very well) Plant them that the noses of the bulbs are poking out of the substrate, and plant very carefully to minimize root trauma and to give them a good start. I always put a layer (I recommendc coco fiber substrate) but of a few cm in height, then I place all the plants very carefully in order not to break any roots nor to bend them to strongly. Then I fill up with substrate. Now I carefully PULL each plant upwards so that the bulb reaches its finally intended height and the roots are somewhat stretched and the previous "bulk" of roots will become "dissolved" now (sorry for possibly inadequate terminology) During this repositioning of the individual plants I knock with both hands (as far as possible) on the container walls to distribute the substrate more uniformly between the roots. I use not-too-moist substrate for replanting, but now - and this is certainly an alternative practice - I do not water "in" when I have planted. Definitely not. I wait some days until the substrate surface becomes dried up to a depth of few cm's and the box has become obviously lighter. THEN I apply water for the first time, and I water exclusively from the bottom; such a lot of water that the box becomes heavier now - heavier than it has been at the moment of replantation accomplished but at that point that the upper cm of the substrate surface remain DRY. Repeat this cycling between dry and wet, and use lukewrm water with fertilizer every time, as I described elsewhere. Hans-Werner

I would go further and suggest homeowners purchase the 10-year parts & labour warranties AND an annual service contract. This way the installer/manufacturer has virtually no ‘Outs’. I have seen too many cases when clients have been charged – even with 10-year parts & labour warranties for things not covered. As an example, a part has to be ordered (not in the truck) necessitating a ‘second’ trip that is not covered. If you’re one of the ‘unlucky’ ones that does have problems with your system you’ll be glad you purchased all the warranties and service contracts. HVAC repairs become very expensive very fast! You’d do better to have all the leverage you possibly can to argue your position. Before signing a contract, after the salesman tells you about your wonderful warranty, ask them, ‘what is not covered under this warranty; what might constitute an extra charge?” You might be surprised! I know there are many that would say, “If the product is well built and installed you shouldn’t need extended warranties”. I would like to agree, but when it’s +90˚F or -15˚F outside and your system is fried – try telling that to the guy in the truck or his boss on the phone! IMPO SR

Hi greenman62, do you put green grass clippings, wait till dry before put wood chips? What is the reason amend the soil above the grade level not the hole? I heard the tree root will not go beyond the hole that has the amended soil and Also water will pool in the hole since surrounding dirt is clay, right?Would it be the same if amend the soil on hill/bump? I am also unclear about planter box. If I amend the dirt for the planter box, would a tree have shallow root? I am thinking of building a new planter box for a avocado tree. Unfortunately my husband amended all the dirt with compost including the hole. Hope my gold nugget will be ok. I have not transplant the two 1 new year trees yet.

Wonderful pictures, Kristi! Great looking bulbs! I wish I could view video clips... but I don't have speakers, and I don't do youtube because it eats into our fair access policy.

I didn't use YouTube, it's posted on PhotoBucket (who knew??). I will tell everyone on the list that the discussions about soil have really helped my bulbs...the roots on the yearling (with the offset) prove that the air circulation is vital! Jodi....you don't need the sound, it's just me babbling...here are my year old bulbs...and her are the seedlings I planted this spring. Now...lets see how big a year old bulb is, and I take it out of the pot...and you can see the ginormous roots!

There's something wrong with my computer... the video won't load properly. I'm sure it's a glitch on my end, so I'll have Larry take a look at it when he has time.

When I moved my desk and set up my computer again, I removed the speakers... I couldn't stand all the dings and other noises, especially from the instant messengers! They drove me nuts! I like to enjoy my coffee and surf time in silence!

Kristi, you've reminded me that it's way past time to re-pot some of these bulbs and bulb youngsters I have! A few of them must be choking to death in their tiny pots!

And yes... all the discussions we've had on soil really made a difference... I was forced to take a deeper look into the how and why of root growth... healthy root growth... and re-think my approach to mediums. I think I've got a good compromise going with the mix I now use. And my persistence paid off... I finally located all the ingredients I need... locally!

I think that their "first year" bulbs look about the size of my 4-month old seedlings. Their 2nd year bulbs look to be the size of my 7-month old seedlings and their 3rd year bulbs look the size of some of my 1-year (14 month) olds. From all the comments here, we are in agreement that their results are disappointing.

If anyone on the list knows these growers, maybe you could point them to the list for some help! We're happy to share!
(I'm still disturbed that they are calling their selfs by the name of the parent plant...that's just wrong!).

Uhmmm.... i think i gotta check out those discussions about soil for hippies hier at the forum :-)) since i have a few seedlings too and yours are doing terrific! What do you do with them??!! Wonder which kind of soilmix you put them into.

I've included a link to some very good reading on container mixes. I use a very similar mix to what is being discussed in the link.

I begin by growing seeds in regular potting soil, but as they get larger and older, I transplant them into a mixture of pine bark fines, perlite, granite chips, vermiculite, with a touch of potting soil for good measure. I've been more than thrilled with my results!
