If you are moving within a state, movers charge by the hour. Be sure that you get a contract that states exactly how many movers and trucks are included in the rate you are quoted. Many times, you will be quoted (for example) a rate for three movers and one truck. They show up with four movers and one truck, take less time than originally quoted, but try to charge you more because they have an extra person. You should also be sure that everyone on the crew is bonded, so that you don't have parolees in your home.

Please, make sure you get references if at all possible.

Some of my family members' belongings were held ransom, where the movers demanded a huge whack of cash before they would unlock the doors and unload. There are scams like this all over the place. Another friend had the same thing happen, hired a moving company who advertised on Kijiji.

Nope, haven't found a place yet. We have till Sept, well, next month--lol. I cannot part with my 2 dogs, so we will find a place that accepts them. Hopefully! LOL~

We had movers when we moved from the beach to here....about 18 miles, perhaps.
It was well worth it. But is was so long ago, I don't remember how much it cost but they did pack up stuff.

I've moved twice in the last year. It was less than 20 miles and cost less than $1000 both times. I did the packing.

I wouldn't allow packers to pack any highly sensitive or valuable materials like bills, checks, credit cards, gift cards, etc. Several people I know have had things stolen.

We had local movers and it took four small trucks, not semi's, because of my wall to wall custom display cabinets I had built for my dolls. I packed it all myself. My husband was not able to help me, he was to far into Alzheimer's. I think it was 4 Guys and a truck. They gave me an approximate estimate and it was very close.

I do not like to do by the hour on most stuff, especially a moving job.

When we moved here, we used North American. I can't remember the cost, but it was far less than we expected for moving the contents of a 4-bedroom house, 80 miles away. I wanted to mention that we got a huge discount (like 40%), plus free insurance, because DH is a member of the American Legion.

The movers were fantastic, and the estimator was unbelievable--his estimate was within 10 pounds of the actual weight!

If they charge by the hour find out if they have a minimum charge. Years ago I didn't have much money and tried to save some by doing part of the moving myself. I moved to an upstairs apartment. It was only a few blocks from where I was living. I made several trips in car with it loaded down with boxes. It was exhausting making so many trips up those stairs with heavy boxes, but at least I was saving money, or so I thought. The movers did their job in less than two hours, but I found out that they had a four hour minimum charge. I was young and naive at tha time. I didn't read the small fine print. I did all that heavy work for nothing.

There are often local companies that have easy cheap rates...like 3 rooms for $150 ...that's just a loading and moving charge but the point is they are a lot cheaper than the national companies. I was in the apartment management business for many years and I had lots of dealings with this type mover...

A friend is moving from Ft Worth to San Antonio soon. She just got her estimate from the movers, they will pack everything except liquids, chemicals etc. Her bid was $5,000.

I am no help. We moved a three bedroom house across country. Cost was about 5K. Thankfully the owner of the company we went to work for paid it. But yikes! We did all of our own packing. I was younger back then and my kids were a HUGE help. I won't move again unless they sell my house!

One BIG mistake you should avoid.
The movers will move your furniture into the new house in the same state as when they picked it up.

Therefore, if (like my BIL did once) you decide to dismantle beds,tables, etc. to save time...they will not put them together at the other end. They can take a bed apart and put it together again much faster than any ordinary home owner.

My BIL had 4 children, and after the movers left, he had 5 beds to put together - was up very, very late that night !

When I've moved, I move my good china, glassware and lamps myself. If they break - no insurance company to fight for compensation.

our last move was a corporate move and from ca to mi, it was about 10 grand...but! we had a 3 br home in ca and they did all the packing...i also added a cleaning service to the bill to ready the house for the buyer...

now mother's bill wasn't nearly that much from las vegas, here, but she only had a double wide mobile home...(2 br)

be sure to call more than one place, too...dh's office required 3 bids...
