We lost my Mom today

My Dear Sweet Mom passed away this morning at 7:30 a.m.

She has suffered with Alzheimers for many years and after a month long fight has finally gone to a better place. I will miss her desperately. It's been a long 5 days here. I think I will sleep for a week.

Mush please know that you can never "lose" your Mom She is still with you and all your love for her went right along with her into that "other" room hugs

Catlady - I'm so sorry for your loss and for the pain you are suffering. Everyone handles their grief differently so don't feel any need to apologize if you aren't handling this the way other folks think you should. I'm sorry you had a bad childhood and that you didn't have enough happy time with your Mom before she had to go. 73 is not old - I am 45 but my husband was 19 years older than me. As a result I have made friends of all ages and I've known some 80 year olds that were a heck of a lot more fun and had more going on than some of the 35 year olds! When people tell me he is in a better place now I just smile and say I know he is but I'm not. He kind of liked the place he was in before, you know? Anyway, people mean well and in the awkwardness of the situation they may say things that rub you the wrong way. Let yourself cry and realize your loss; I think that's the only way to move forward and be emotionally healthy. The memory book gives you something to do that feels productive and, if you are like me, it feels like you are doing something for her. It will be a treasure for you to keep. If you absolutely must take meds to deal with this then by all means do it. But remember when you do stop using the meds you still will have to face your loss and deal with your feelings. Do you have a good support system within your family or with friends? If you do please utilize them. I have a close friend who didn't have a good childhood and she grieves for that and she grieves for the fact that she feels she didn't give her kids a good childhood. We do the best we can do at the time. Sometimes it isn't good enough and sometimes other people think it isn't the best we have but they just don't really know. If you can get into counseling you might try that; I think it has helped me at times. I'll remember you in my prayers.

I lost my mother over two years ago to cancer. I found this forum last night, and cried my heart out I think for the first time since she passed. Reading others posts and knowing that there are people out there dealing with the same emotions is comforting. If you can't find a support group or a friend who understands, then please feel free to share it with everyone on this forum. People just don't understand until they are in your shoes, so don't pay any attention to what they say - I truly think they just don't get it. When my Mom was sick, my MIL (to-be) would come over to my house and remark that my house was too messy. Can you believe that? I was appalled that anyone would think that sitting at home cleaning my house was more important than spending time with my sick mother, knowing her days were numbered. I'm still bitter about it, and probably always will be, but honestly, I love my MIL and all I can say is some people just don't get it. I think you and I have bigger hearts than most, and that's the only way I can find logic with such ungodly insensitive behavior. I have cats and dogs, and sometimes, I think animals are better companions at times like this. Whenever I am feeling sad, my animals KNOW it, and they never let me down. I know it may seem difficult to do, but I dug out a lot of old pics of my Mom and seeing her in those "happy" moments makes me feel better. It helps me think about what I had when we were together instead of dwelling on what I've lost. I hope that makes sense. Carry those happy memories in your heart - it's what she would want you to remember, and in that way, she is still there with you every day. My heart goes out to you and I am sorry for your loss. Hi Cinful...I know exactly what you mean...when the doctors told her 3-6 months left, I thought I would never stop crying, and I didn't want our last moments together to be miserable. I know we said everything we wanted and needed to say to each other, but in the end, I still worry that there may have been something else left unsaid, something I forgot to ask her, or something from the past that we just wanted to remember. We only got about 2 months together at the end, and even when it finally happened it seemed like it just couldn't be happening already. I am sorry that you are alone, I do have children and a husband, but we all lived together, and they really do not understand what I am going through. I feel like I am alone, except that I can't just break down all the time, I have to be strong...it feels like it is killing me to do that though. I really just want to crawl into bed and stay there. The one thing that keeps me going is that my mom asked me to. She told me to be strong for HER, and to be happy for HER. I am not happy, but I am being as strong as I can be. That means not thinking of her too often, or all I would do is cry. But I know she knows that. She bought me a journal at the end, and I didn't think it would help, but it has. I write to her as much as I can, everyday in the beginning, and I tell her the things I would have told her if she were here. It does help. My mom was my everything too...even though I have other family, and children, she was it. Every moment of the day we were together...have been for 42 years. She has sent me signs since she's been gone, I know a lot of people don't believe in that, and think it is wishful thinking, but it's not. Keep an open mind after everything is over, don't shut yourself down. Stay with your mom till the end, try not to feel guilty...I know that even though my mom and I talked about everything, I still felt guilty when she passed, like maybe there was more I could have done. I am trying to get past that. I feel so bad for you, and your dad...maybe try to be strong for him, as I have to for my baby...it helps to be there for someone else, when all you want to do is go with your mom. I know at least for me that is true. When she first got sick, I thought I would go with her in the end, but I cannot go right now. My family needs me, my baby needs me. I think that is why he happened so late in my life...he was my lifeline from God...Take care, please let me know how you are doing, and I will do the same.

My best friend lost her Mom after suffering with Alzheimer's disease. She said in effect she lost her twice. It is such a sad disease.

I'm so sorry, Mush. My dementia-afflicted mother died seven years ago and I hadn't realized I'd miss her as terribly as I do. With Alzheimer's (as I'm sure you know), you have to lose her twice. What I've found, though, is that her death enabled me to remember her the way she was before that horrible disease possessed her. You will be in my prayers. (((((Mush))))

I'm so very sorry, Mush! I went through that with my own dear Mom and even tho' we think we have prepared ourselves for the inevitable, it still leaves a big hole in our hearts. I hope you will find comfort in memories of the good times you shared.

I'm so so sorry for your loss. I lost my Father to that Disease and now my Mom is suffering. It's not easy for us to watch our Loved Ones deteriate.

Oh, Mush, I'm so, so sorry. I know you must be exhausted, both physically and mentally. My mom has had three light strokes in the last six weeks and the confusion, esp. at night, has increased a bunch. When she slips up it scares me to death. This morning when I brought her home from the hospital and saw one of her conditions listed as dementia I could have cried.

Get you a bunch of rest and try and comfort yourself with the fact that now she is finally at peace. You haven't lost your mom - you'll carry her with you until the day you die!

Mush, I know how you are feeling. I lost my beloved mother six weeks ago. I hope you can soon find peace. I never knew the true meaning of being "heartbroken" until I lost my mother. Surround yourself with loving friends and family. Cry when you feel like it. Don't be in a rush to "get over it".... bless you and your family
