quietly surfing the web for quilt photos and shows...

all I've heard for the past

twenty minutes

not kidding

are my neighbours thumping around, opening and closing car doors, closing their front door, opening their front door, slamming their screen door, thumping around, opening and closing car doors....

I'm in a side-by-side duplex (home) - I wish they could sit here with me and just listen to themselves.

This is the ONE THING that IRKS ME TO NO END

why can't they try to be a little more considerate?????

they are nice neighbours - just loud bangers with stuff in their house.

this is our last attached home in my lifetime unless I have absolutely no choice in the matter.

Bless your heart Pag. I remember noises like that from when I lived in an apartment. it sure can interrupt a peaceful time.
Are you having any luck finding quilts? I found some real beauties a couple of weeks ago. They are Amish quilts and most of them are not within my budget, but they were so pretty to look at. Have you seen these?

He is in violation of federal law for sure. A neighbor who had considerable acreage started a mail-order sausage business - he also had a store in town. The FDA inspections and rules are very strict, his facilities were inspected and he had to make some alteration to satisfy the FDA, among other requirements: his facility could not be used for any other purpose, he had to make an office, including toilet facilities, available the the FDA inspector, who never showed up once, all the rules were essentially the regulations for large producers. In addition of course, his store was under regulation from the local health department. It was a solo operation, his spouse helped at times, no other employees. I don't now what the local rules are for him, but he definitely is violating Federal regulations big time

Compliments are always nice of course. I remember the first 'real' garden I started from scratch in the first house we bought (had built) over 40 years ago. We had little money so most of the limited budget went toward the load of soil, seeds, and started plants for the backyard veggie garden. So my flower beds in the front had annuals and the naturally sandy soil was only amended slightly. However my plants flourished with daily watering so when our neighbors (who had a gorgeous garden) commented favorably I was very happy. Perhaps they were only being nice but I put a lot of work into that garden and I was proud of it. My current garden is not visible from the country road we live on so the only people to see my garden are friends, relatives, and the occasional visitor. I've had lots of compliments, which I always appreciate, but primarily garden for myself and my DH. My DH always tells me how good it looks after all the weeding is finished (most of which he does) while I do the moving and planting.

Great point made my beth4. I was watching a video of myself made 20 years ago in our first house. The kitchen was functional but ugly, the family room dark and old fashioned, even for that time. But you know, it was our first home and we were in love with it. We knew we would need to make updates, but we also were fine with living in the house the way it was, for as long as we needed to save, in order to make updates. And we aren't talking about MAJOR work. Over the next 8 years we stripped wallpaper, changed our flooring, painted and repaired and added on to a deck. Granted we did remodel the kitchen right before we sold, but it was an inexpensive remodel that hardly made a dent in our finances. My teenaged daughter (who was born after we sold the house) was horrified as she watched the video with me and could not believe I would be willing to live in such an "old" looking house. My, how things have changed. Yes, a lot of this has to do with the remodeling industry. But I also think that we were in a different place (before the most recent crash) economically as a country, than we were 20-25 years ago. We had about two decades of prosperity, incredibly escalating real estate values and the mindset that things would continue this way. In 1994, when we sold that old house we made a puny $35,000 profit on the sale ( after owning it for 8 years). In the following two years, our new home increased in value over $100,000! With such a rapid escalation, it no longer seemed a stretch to start pouring money into our homes and making them our own "mini-castles." After all, we knew we would get every penny back and even more. Why not remodel and enjoy the results AND make a profit? It was a no brainer. That no longer is the case. However, we still haven't been able to give up the mindset of the booming past. The younger generation grew up in perfectly updated surroundings and they are the ones now looking to purchase their first homes. They aren't willing to compromise because of the way they grew up. They don't know anything different. So we have created our own monster. I think we have entered a period of time in home ownership where there are no set answers and uncertainty overwhelms us all. Of course you do not spend money on a house if you don't have the money to spend. That is what got us into this mess in the first place. Today, I am 5 years away from paying off my mortgage and still have many, many years before I hit retirement age. My house is still worth a considerable amount more today than when I purchased it. I do not feel guilty about spending money to remodel that home. But then again, I can AFFORD to remodel. If we live within our means, the quality of our lives becomes inmeasurably improved. Hopefully, we can instill that idea into younger generatation. Jeez, what a rambling message this has been. Sorry.

I can sympathize. Our previous home was a townhome. Between parking and noise problems, we were so happy to leave there.

Now, our nearest neighbors are 1/2 mile away. It's so nice to have absolute peace and quiet.

Enjoy the Amish country quilt site that Linda provided the link for. I have spent hours at that site!

McPeg...have you ever seen the mosaiced quilt...she made the base with chicken wire and concrete draped over an antique iron head board. If I remember right it weighs 300 lbs.

If I can find it would you like to see a pic. of it...?

Geez, I collect pics of quilts for future ideas...I don't want to 'copy' but get inspired by colour combinations. I'm still using my quiltmaker / QNM mags a lot but sometimes I like to see what other people are doing.

Once I get my basement cleared (I am making progress slowly on downsizing my clutter) I will be pulling out all of my sewing stuff to sort out and find out what I have again! I'm dying to get quilting but want to wait until other things are done this summer. It's more a fall/winter thing for me....

yeah, so here I am surfing and where do I wind up???

Well, cloth made menstrual pads - I'm sick of the disposable everything today and thinking seriously about checking these things out. I hate being 'trapped' by industry to 'need' their products...and don't get me started on other ideas because you probably won't want to read them....

like.......

making my own cloth wipes with a diaper pail setup to use when I only have water waste...(that wasn't too bad was it?)...toilet paper is sooooo expensive and we're trapped on that one too! Especially since catalogs seem to be going online and paperless!!!!!

Hey, so my prozac is being adjusted. Shoot me! I'm just thinking what if DH and I actually DO get that house built totally off-grid and we get marooned one winter for a wee bit due to weather??? Can't run to the store every five minutes, especially with gas prices the way they are! What did my Mom do on the farm in the depression? So I'm sitting here all over the internet with ideas. I could be folding laundry but I'm waiting for my lazy house fairies to return from their naps to catch up around here.

A friend of mine is also thinking about going to fabric as well instead of industry pads. I hate garbage. I hate packaging. I feel terrible we have so much waste.

So anyhow, maybe I'll go get inspired with those Amish quilts..........
