has anyone grown these? I tried them this year for the first time and OMG they are delicious, even better than the Mortgage Lifter that I thought was outstanding.

All those purple or "black" tomatoes seem to be highly regarded, with a richer flavor than most. I grew Black Cherry tomatoes last year and am doing them again this year. Delicious!

Fruits fusing to each other is actually fairly common and seems to be tied to the cooler air temps at pollination time. Sometimes careful examination of the blooms early on will show that 2-3 blooms are fused - a so-called mega bloom - and they result in the fused fruit appearance. It isn't limited to any one variety. There are other possible contributing factors but the fruit is still edible and is usually only found with the early fruits of the season. Later season production is usually fine. Dave

Hello. This will be my first year to start a garden. All I lack are Cherokee Purple seeds. I come from a long line of farmers and gardeners. I've always just planted a few things here and there but never done a full garden. I'm really excited to grow, harvest and can food for my family. If anyone has advice for a new comer like me, I'd love to hear from you!

Issue with Cherokee Purple Tomato - Should I remove plant?
Q

Look at it this way - even if it was a disease of some kind that wouldn't mean you would need to pull the plant. All the common diseases are air borne fungus spores or bacteria so the odds are if one plant has it so do the others already. So you do what you need to control and treat the disease once you know which one it is. Like Chris my first thought was nitrogen burn since it is just the tips and edges of a few new leaves. And that is still possible even if you haven't fed them. But when it is such a small amount of damage and the rest of the plant looks perfectly healthy then 9 times out of 10 it is just environmental damage such as you discovered. Next most likely cause when we see something like this is a pest issue. Only when those issues have been ruled out do we need to start thinking about diseases. Dave

I grew Purple Calabsh last year which were a dark purple. I wasn't too wild about them because they had an unusual musky flavor. This year I planted Brandywine which is suppose to be a great heirloom tomato and not a single flower has set fruit. It is a monster plant but no tomatoes! I keep meaning to try Mortgage Lifter and also Cherokee. Maybe next year. I love yellow tomatoes and had some great yellow cherry tomatoes last year. So sweet and lots of them!

The mortgage lifters are an excellant eating tomato, Mine get huge, the size of two hands. The Cherokee purple got huge too,we had too much rain and now they are starting to split.Had never tasted one before, wasn't sure what color it was supposed to be, but looked good. I brought it in the house and washed it and cut out the split and sliced it , it was the reddest color inside! Put a sprinkle of salt on it and tried a piece. OMG , so sweet, no tough skin....Gotta get bacon to make blts. Also have San Marzano and plum tomato of some kind. They aren't giving me as many a day as I thought they would. I'm getting about 2 quarts of sauce a day. So. I'm just freezing it.It's not worth canning that small amount. Smells so good though with the fresh garlic and onions and peppers. Yummm

We have a beautiful Cherokee Purple tomato plant growing in our tomato patch. It's huge and lush and just starting to set tomatos.

We've never eaten them before so we're both looking forward to them.
