How long until a verdict is reached?

I saw on Facebook that people are taking bets on how long it will be until a verdict is reached on the Casey Anthony case. Hours? Days? Weeks? What do you think?

Well you are quite an optimist to think a verdict will be reached at all! I predict a week of struggling and a hung jury.

I am in complete agreement. I have been saying all along, the attorneys for her have been trying to get a dismissal, and if all else fails a hung jury. Never once did I think they were going for an innocent verdict.

How long until seeds become plants?
Q
Comments (6)
Megan, I admire your determination and enthusiasm! But if I may, I'd like to offer some advice gleaned from 40 years of gardening experience. The early years were a financial challenge, but resulted in great personal satisfaction. To save yourself and any plants that MAY (very iffy!) result from your seeds the stress of caring for them indoors and then the not-inconsiderable chore of moving them to a new location, growing them on until they become large enough to bear fruit, hardening them off (getting them used to the outdoors), etc.--I would strongly suggest you nurture your gardening spirit with little more than a few herbs for now--or just to see something green and growing, even start an avocado or citrus in a pot on a sunny windowsill. These are fairly forgiving, at least for a while--and it is not hard to leave them behind eventually! Many people just trying to grow herbs in a south-facing window in winter do not realize how little sunlight actually is reaching their plants. Not only are the days about half as long, if there are window screens, that cuts the light down radically. Most culinary herbs are Mediterranean natives, so they want LONG bright sunny days and balmy nights, not the short dark winter days on a windowsill where the temperature may drop nearly to freezing at night through the glass! The thing about growing under lights is that light is effective only at the top of a plant. For a mature plant to do more than barely survive indoors under light, and especially to get things to bear fruit, you'd have to just about have lights surrounding the plant vertically in order to provide sufficient light to all the leaves, and leave them on at least 12 hours a day. (I usually leave mine on 16 hour days for seedlings that I start.) Actual greenhouses are all window, so light is pouring in from all sides. In the meantime, Megan, until your own spot of ground is a reality, find a way to put some money aside against the day when you have a garden spot prepared and at that time buy plants that will be ready to bear within a year or two. No matter how strapped for cash you may be, I expect that you, like pretty much everyone, have little indulgences that you can afford to (or will yourself to!) sacrifice and can put aside a few cents-- daily if possible, but weekly for sure-- in order to make your dream a reality. Here are some examples of ways I have been able to save: clip out store coupons for things that you are going to buy anyway (that's important!--it saves you nothing if you buy a brand name you would not ordinarily purchase if it still costs more with the coupon discount than a generic item!) and then as soon as you get home from the store, put the cents you saved into a special bank just for YOU. Also when you come home from any shopping trip, immediately put any coins you have into your bank. Oh, yes, that reminds me--cut up credit cards! Pay cash! If you smoke (hope not!!), QUIT or at least cut back & put the savings aside. Same with anything--cut back on that beer, fancy coffee (or chose plain brewed instead of a latte!), a candy bar, donut, etc.--cutting back even a little bit will start seed money growing (pun intended!) and your health will improve, too! Do you drive around campus when you could use a bike in good weather? Save gas money! Anyway, you get the idea. But you must have the will power to save the money & not break into your bank for any reason! Cut out pictures of the plants you want and make a notebook, plan your garden, do whatever it takes to keep yourself inspired so you do not touch your plant money! Finally, when you do get settled in your new place, find out about local garden clubs (online, Chamber of Commerce, library, etc.), go to the extension office for free how-to handouts on all aspects of gardening, talk to people at farmers' markets, find out when & where plant sales are or just who likes to garden. Most gardeners are happy to share extra plants and seeds or sell them for a minimal cost AND share their expertise. Just look at the resources at Garden Web! We all are out here, all over the U.S., as happy to help in person as on line. Hope this was not too long or preachy. Just that I remember how badly I yearned for a garden 40 years ago --and now I have gardened in 4 states and in Belgium and learned so much. I still am on a tight budget now that we are retired, but I have LOTS of plants and have made so many gardening friends. Good luck, Megan! And stay tuned to GW for encouragement!

How long until a submerged hose clamp rusts?
Q
Comments (8)
Ah Bless you too Sandy, you don't even need to make a do-nut out of a piece of EPDM liner, if you want to protect that clamp screw from rusting out. Buy a roll of self sealing rubber tape from the plumbing or electrical depts, in either Home Depot or Lowes, Etc. It is sold some places as "Magic Tape", or leak fixing tape. It is actually self amalgamating tape, which means, when you apply it, stretching it, as you tape it on, it seals to it's self. Once applied it will seal out any moisture. Or in, in the case of mending a cracked/punctured pipe, it will stop any moisture from leaking out. Yes you are correct ordinary tin solder will not stick to stainless steel. Silver solder will, but it is much more expensive and you require greater heat to melt it. That is over kill anyway. If you use a good quality hose clamp it should not loosen off. Take care, [by the way you have mail] LOL "Horton"

How long until I turn it?
Q
Comments (6)
Another answer as to when to turn a pile is dependent on the type of organisms that you want to be dominant in the compost - bacteria or by fungi. Though the linked article is on Activated Compost Tea, I have found it instructive. http://www.taunton.com/finegardening/pages/g00030_p2.asp "You can manipulate compost so it's dominated either by bacteria or by fungi. Which one you want depends on what you're growing and what kind of soil you have. You always want a bacteria-dominated compost tea for use as a foliar spray, whatever the plant. Bacteria-dominated compost is also best for applying to the soil before growing vegetables and herbs. Fungi-dominated compost is good for mulching around berries and fruit trees. But research has shown that a foliar spray of bacteria-dominated compost tea is extremely useful to prevent the foliar diseases that plague most gardens. Thus, most of us need only be concerned with making a bacteria-dominated compost tea. For bacteria to dominate, compost should be made from a preponderance of green materials. You need a mix of 25 percent high-nitrogen ingredients, 45 percent green ingredients, and 30 percent woody material. High-nitrogen materials include manure and legumes, such as alfalfa, pea, clover, or bean plant residues. Grass clippings from the first two or three cuttings in spring, when the blades are lush and tender, qualify as high-nitrogen; the rest of the season, they're simply green material. Green material includes any green plant debris, kitchen scraps, and coffee grounds, which, although brown in color, contain sugars and proteins that bacteria love. Woody material includes wood chips, sawdust, paper plates and towels, and shredded newspaper." Terran Here is a link that might be useful: Start with the right kind of compost

how long until buds bloom
Q
Comments (1)
It will depend alot of weather conditions because I had mine in the cool garage or outdoors on nice days in the winter, and they really have taken forever (a few mos) on some of them to open...whereas in the spring or early fall the buds seem to grow much faster and flower sooner. Maybe if you can give it more warmth and greenhouse conditions you could get flowers sooner. Just don't let the plant dry out or be in windy areas or the buds will fall off or dry up..Also make sure it gets enough light.

I think it'll be someday tomorrow with a guilty of second degree murder. They deliberated 6 hours today.

I think sometime tomorrow. No way a hung jury.

Well, I'm on the fence.

Tomorrow or Wed, if it's a conviction.

If not, I predict they'll deliberate for about 2-3 weeks, with an Allen charge from the judge around the beginning of next week, but will end up hung.

Hoping, of course, for a guilty verdict. If it's guilty, I don't see how anyone could come in with less than 1st degree.

DH and DD, however are saying 5-6 days deliberation for what it's worth.

I watched several hours of the Defense's closing statements. Wow! I really think they will come in with a guilty verdict but not first degree murder because the cause of death is unknown. 2nd degree murder is more likely due to the fact that even if she did drown, there was a coverup and all the lies she told the police. I think it will be by Wed of this week. I don't think it will go on much longer than that.

I've been following this case and I am curious as to how the defense team is being paid. Are Casey's parents paying? It must be in the millions by this time.Could he be pro bono? I've never heard any mention of this anywhere.

I believe they are court-appointed.
azzalea

They have stated that Casey is 'indigent'. I'm not sure Jose Baez is court-appointed. I could be wrong, but it seems to me that he jumped out of the woodwork at the beginning, wanting to take this case--but he's only being paid what the state will pay. And the experts testifying for Casey are getting just the court-approved fees, not the huge amounts they would normally collect on a 'private pay' case--at least that's what I heard (I've been watching on Florida TV stations on the internet, and they do have some different info than we're getting on the broadcast stations)

yea..they probably took the case pro-bono or court appointed knowing full well they will make a fortune on the book & movie rights

They are not pro bono. Baez got some money from the sale of Caylees pictures to ABC. The rest is taken care of by the state.

Verdict by tomorrow, 1st degree, Friday at the very latest.
lisa_fla

Casey used the $200K on picture and video fees to pay Baez. When that ran out, the state kicked in, but that money is only used for his hired experts and investigations. His work now is pro bono. She contacted him initially because she heard his name mentioned by other inmates. There is speculation on the web that it isn't true and she knew him before all of this started. BTW if you look at her jail call videos-her family tried to persuade her to get another lawyer. They didn't like him from the start.

I read tonight that the judge will give everyone 30 minutes to get to court once a verdict is reached.

Her lawyers are courtesy of the Florida taxpayers--that would be me, for one. Ick!

One reason I think the jury will decide quickly is because they've been sequestered since May 2? They are 90 miles from home and it's been a long time sitting in that court room. I really feel for them. Even their TV viewing is monitored so they don't happen to see anything to do with the trial. I notice the judge goes out of his way to take their feelings into consideration.

It is indeed the Florida taxpayers who are footing the bill.

Nobody is doing this for free. Why would they?

I HOPE they come in with a verdict today. Guilty in some degree. She had something to do with the death of this little girl, and should spend the rest of her days to "party on" behind bars. I really liked the Judge, he was really a no-nonsense guy and I respected that. Guess I'm ready for this to be over after three years of hearing about it. I wonder what Nancy Grace will latch on to harp on next.

I have a feeling it will be a quick decision because the jury had to sit through such a long trial and had 6 weeks to absorb the evidence/defense presented. I think they'll announce a verdict tomorrow, but no one really knows what the jury is thinking.

IMHO, there's no way she wasn't involved in that child's death. After watching the trial nearly every day, the Prosecutors convinced me of her guilt.

I feel very sorry for her parents. They've already lost so much and they stand to lose even more.

Guilty by Wednesday. This jury will not decide her sentence.

I feel a little sympathy for the parents, but not much.

I do feel sorry for the jurors and for the residents of FL who have to foot the bill for this because Casey is a troubled person, a liar, and does not have the moral backbone to stand up and admit what happened to her child.

Yes, the judge has done a good job. He's calm and seems fair. How I'd love to know what he's thinking!

I think Thursday and I just hope there's not one hold out who will make this a hung jury. If 11 were for acquittal and I was there , I know I'd hold out and would not be persuaded. Casey killed her with premeditation. One piece of tape would keep her quiet under the chloroform, one over her nose and another for good measure were to KILL her. It was not an accident. Casey is a sociopath and her parents are not exemplary members of society. Cindy needs to be prosecuted for perjury. I don't think she'll get the death penalty though.
