heading for Kansas tomorrow

My biking buddy and Mel and I head to Kansas tomorrow. Will stay overnight at fazoo's, in north west Kansas.

Anyone else near Oberlin? that we could meet face to face?

Next is Casper Wyoming, then overnight somewhere near Bozeman, Wyoming.. and then Missoula Montana is our driving route.

Anyone near this route?

Besides these questions... I guess, I better say bye for now. I will check in, if I can, but otherwise post a new journal when I get back.

I plan to have a GLORIOUS bike ride adventure.

PS, for those that forgot, I will ride from Missoula Montana to Jasper National Park in Canada.

well folks, this was the first christmas we had without one of my younger sisters. Christmas dinner just wasn't the same without her. You see, Connie (my sister) past away from colon cancer just a few months ago. It was such an aggressive type, folks at the Mayo clinic had never seen that type. But I thank my God and Savior, that I had 13 other brothers and sisters to share it with. I am the oldest of what was 15 children. This year I will be planting a large flower garden in remembrance of her thanks to folks here that was generous with flower seed that they was given away, especially when I had nothing to give but just a few cents on postage and a BEAP. What a wonderful community Garden Web is and how rich everyone is. Just do me a favor this spring, TAKE ENOUGH TIME FROM YOUR BUSY DAY TO SMELL AND ENJOY THE FLOWERS and realize life is but a vapor, time is short, but there are blessing we have never counted.

The perception of heat is a very funny thing. I've been in the Florida Keys in July and have felt cooler there than in NYC at the same time of the year. Down there, there is a nearly constant breeze and incessant, cooling thunder showers while in urban areas of the North, the heat is just absorbed by tar and asphalt and lingers into the stiffening night with neither breeze nor respite.

Thanks all for the well wishes. I am writing from Istanbul where the food is wonderful! I will never remember the names of the dishes,but I will try to post pics/descriptions of some of the meals we had when I get home. I can't compare this city to any other I've been to. Let me say that having just been to Denmark, I don't think I could have come to a place more contrasting in food, sights and culture. For those of you considering a trip here - Do It! I am a reluctant traveler - nervous about safety, being understood in a foreign country, etc. I have to say that Istanbul is a city rich with history but with all the modern ammenities. The people have been warm and gracious and many speak English. Today we are touring the Spice Bazaar, which is what prompted me to check in to CF. I can't wait!

It used to be that during the Masters, speed traps were common on the belt line around the town and on roads leading to and from town. So be forewarned. When driving the main north-south highway past Agusta, have you noticed an occassional paved strip alongside the road? These are truck weighing stations! When a trooper pulls over a truck for inspection, they use those strips. A portable scale may taken out of the squad car's trunk and each truck wheel is weighted one at a time. The scale is placed in front of a wheel and the trucker drives the vehicle upon it. (for best accuracy, the scale should be flush with the roadway. I don't recall if a shallow pit was present to recieve a scale. If the wheel suspension gets depressed upon driving upon the scale, it will register more weight than it should.) When I saw those, I marveled at how low cost those were compared to the installations we have in Wisconsin.

Hey! Great ride! Its hot in Kansas now, but the temperture and your disposition will improve as you head north toward Montana. Since you are passing through Wyoming, consider taking a route across the top of the Big Horn Mountains traveling from south to north and coming off the Big Horns at Sheridan. It is suprisingly nice once on top. Its a different world up there, and for 50 miles, it will not seem like mountain driving. If you did not know, you would not realize that you were running atop of along mountain. However, check you gasoline supply before going up. The last time I was there, I found only one gas station and that was at the north end. It may not be there today.

In Canada, one of the most beautiful runs this side of heaven is the one from Banff north to Jasper. The south end runs in the Bow river valley up to the divide. Driving is easy, but will be cooler in the passes.

At Banff, you can treat yourself to a chair lift ride up to a ski lodge high on the mountain. When I was there, one could get a combined price for a chair lift and all you can eat breakfast at the lodge. The breakfast was worth the price. After the first serving, you could go back for seconds - and they had real Canadian bacon. We found this to be very reasonable cost, and an excellent view of the Banff area.

While at Jasper, be sure to take a side trip to Maliagn (sp) Lake. Boat rides are available to the most photogaphed island in North America. Its the one with a picturesque stand of evergreens, and has appeared on many Calendars.

Jasper is a tourist hotspot. It summer, it is filled with 20 somethings with backpacks and hiking gear.

I wish I were going. (I was there 20 years ago.)

I am from Kansas and I love Casper, Wyoming. I would love to live there one winter and snowmobile to the grocery store. LOL I don't like heat.
