My stupid ulcer is back.....

Went to the er Monday morning after a long night of being very sick (won't go into details on that) But I knew it would be my ulcer again...yep it is! So I get to go Friday and get a Upper GI done....oh boy! My doc is so funny she said so what you have going on Friday and I said sounds like i have date with you ....she said yep you do....so will let you all know whats up when that is over....Just getting on Nexxium has helped so much....Stacy

That's too bad. I've never had an ulcer, but my brother did and it was no fun.

Some doctors believe that ulcers are caused by a specific type of bacteria and treat ulcers with antibiotics. Have you done any research on the subject? A friend of mine has had a stomach ulcer for more than twenty years. I did a web search for herbal products which might be helpful. I found an herbal blend which was supposed to kill the bacteria associated with stomach ulcers, and also relax a person. My friend said his ulcer hurt for the first two days he took the herbal product, but then he felt much better. Unfortunately he did not understand that the product was meant to be used as an antibiotic. He did not follow through with the entire dosage for the prescribed period of time. Within a few weeks his ulcer was acting up again. He decided that meant the product had not worked, even though he had not taken the product correctly. He did not want to try it again, thought it was a waste of money. I paid $17 for a bottle of the herbal preparation, plus shipping. It is my understanding that one should not mention product names on the forum. So I will let you do your own research, if you are interested. I searched on stomach ulcer herbals.

Feel very bad for you Melissa. Such an overwhelming, frustrated feeling. We have not had that plant in the yard, thankfully, but we did have a perennial weed grass that gave us a run for our money. Finally the only thing that got rid of it was smothering the whole entire area with cardboard and bark mulch for a whole season. I was so glad to get rid of that. Doesn't sound like you will have to be that drastic. Don't let it get to you. A four to five foot area isn't too bad yet. As long as you prevent any of them that bloom from going to seed, then you can take your time and get them out I would think. Just keep pulling and chipping away at them whenever you see them and pop the flowers off every time you see one and it will get under control before you know it. Enjoy your garden this year and don't let it ruin the growng season for you. :-) pm2

Hi nolongernewyork, I developed fibromyalgia just as I was starting perimenopause. It makes me wonder if the two are VERY interconnected. I'm 57 and haven't had a period in 3 years, but have TONS of muscle and joint aches. I had horrible GERD and IBS during perimenopause, but fortunately, it has calmed down. One thing I learned was that people who are treated for h. pylori, actually can develop alot of heartburn after the treatment. I think there's something about having that infection that keeps you from having heartburn. I'm also learning that our GI tracts are extremely important to our well being. Do a search on healing your GI tract naturally, and you'll learn lots about it. Make a food diary and see if you have developed some intolerances to certain foods. I know I can't eat much dairy anymore. Try to cut down on your carbs and especially sugar. I've heard one theory that GERD is caused by a diet of too many carbs. When we eat more than we can digest, it ferments and leads to GERD. And caffeine can make alot of your pain and GI problems worse. I think its a good thing to look up treatment for fibromyalgia, because perimenopause can have symptoms just like it. Gosh......your plate is sooooooo full!! I'm sure you hadn't planned on raising your 3 kids by yourself. Hang in there!

Spraying salt water into the mouth of a dog with renal disease is a really BAD idea. One of the fundamental parameters carefully controlled in a renal diet is LOW SODIUM. The dog is certainly swallowing at least SOME of this salt water, which is making that expensive renal diet useless. I agree with anita that it sounds like your dog is having a uremic crisis and needs appropriate veterinary treatment. I saw on your page that you are in Mayalsia, and I am not familiar with what medications are available there. However I would certainly ask a vet about starting an antacid such as cimetidine or a proton pump inhibitor such as omeprazole to help control acidemia which may be causing the ulcers. I would also stop the salt water treatments as it is not likely to help and may contribute to worsening the kidney disease. Sucrulfate will help protect the oral and gastric mucosa from further harm and help heal the ulcer- mix 1 gram tablet in 6cc water and use a syringe to spray into the mouth. Other considerations in renal disease are managing hypertension (enalapril will help with both hypertension and proteinuria; some dogs also need amlodipine), managing fluid and electrolyte balances, controlling hyperphosphatemia (renal diet is a good start, can add phosphorus binders if that is not enough), and managing other clinical signs as they occur. I hope this helps a bit. Oral ulcers and uremia can be managed with proper veterinary care. Good luck.

No they are no fun..but I will make it! At least this time I knew the symptoms and went in right away so didn't need blood.....Last time i didn't have a clue and got 2 units.....Stacy

I had a bleeding ulcer. I tested positive for H pylori, the doctor put me on antibiotics for 14 days and that cleared up the ulcer. Have you been tested for H pylori.

I have had a serious acid problem for the last 15 years and take something healing when it gets really bad. When I have the scope tests they just tell me it's a little pink, but no ulcers.

DS had ulcers at oh shoot 15 or 16. He was one sick puppy. We couldn't figure it out. He'd have pain and throwing up and said his stomach felt "bubbling"...wouldn't eat, eventually it would go away for a few hours, he'd eat and back in bed with everything all over again.
It is tradition in DH's family to have stomach problems! LOL Everyone does. DS was paying $75 after his insurance paid for Nexium. They finally told him try Prilosec and that works just as good for him. His ulcers are gone now but he still has heart burn from he!!, Prilosec helps that.

I feel for you Stacy! Ulcers suck!

No I haven't ever had that test what is it? How do they do that one? I am going to write it down and ask my doc. on friday before she knocks me out! Mine are also the bleeding kind....Brian has them but they are not the bleeding kind...Stacy

Ask your doctor about using antibiotics to clear up ulcers. As enjoyingspring says, H. pylori can be cured. I remember reading about this in the paper about 8 years ago when they discovered this. They need to test for which antibiotics clear up your case, and then you need to take two courses of two different antibiotics. The use of two different antibiotics, one after the other, to get rid of ulcers was new information from a study.

Wow noda what you describe is exactly how I feel....since my last bout with this about 5 or 6 years ago....I have been fine....I have had trouble for the last year on and off...but started the vomiting old blood and clots and KNEW I have to get to the doc..... (sorry probably to much info there)...Yep I can't eat and bubbly is a good way to describe how my tummy is besides when I get like the sharpe burning shooting pain in the middle of my chest....like heartburn....I hate this but know it will get better...I have been using the prilosec on and off for the last year....probably should have been better at taking it...but I wasn't....Anyways thanks all for the kind thoughts....and i will keep you all posted...
I will ask my doc about that on Friday....Stacy
