DH Announces 'Toad in the Hole'

Bet you thought this was about a recipe, huh? Uh-uh, it's about toads. I thought I'd tell you how I spent some of my afternoon.

We have a window well that won't take a standard-size cover. Spiders like to make webs across parts of it to catch insects. Sometimes, especially after heavy rains, toads try to raid the webs and fall to the bottom of the window well. That's what DH saw when he checked the yard this afternoon: A toad in the 'hole'.

I'm in charge of Toad Rescue. It involves a bucket on a string and the long-extension light-bulb-changer. I lower the bucket and put the bulb-changing 'cage' over the toad. He nestles in and I lift him into the bucket. Then I haul him up and release him. This seldom works on the first try and would certainly be mystifying to any passer-by.

DH saw one toad, but I 'rescued' four. (None asked to be kissed.)
