Baby Babies (pic heavy) finally

IÂm sorry to be so long in getting these on here. I donÂt get by the table as often as I would like.

I was so thrilled to see so many people with an interest in the little guys, they really are sweet and beneficial! Y'all really are the best.

Here is a baby Seminole bat Â they live in trees and are solitary except for mother bats with pups. There is also a Red bat that look almost the same but lighter in color. The fur on the mom is even softer than it looks!

This is the mama with all four (!!) babies Â there is one under the middle pup you can see. Together they out weigh her. After storms we get lots of calls about mamas and babies being down. We try to get them back in the nearest tree, but sometime we canÂt so they get released out by us.

This is a Big Brown bat who came in as a ÂretireeÂ. His snout was completely smashed by a homeowner who used a tennis racket to chase him down when he got stuck in their house. At least they felt bad about it and called us (not bad enough to make a donation though :P) He had to be tube fed for the first two weeks while the worst damage healed. We had him for slightly more than 2 years as a non-releasable due to a hole in his sinus never healing completely closed - thus killing his radar. His teeth were pretty worn so heÂd already lived a good while before coming in. He was very social and made a great education animal. Since he didnÂt fly a lot, he also got a bit chubby. Here he is eating dinner on the couch. He liked to be out and about when were home.

We occasionally do other animals depending on how many bats we have at the time and the season.

This is Norman the ÂkillerÂ woodpecker gnawing on DH.

A black crowned night heron.

This crazy raccoon had a thing about drinking upside down. Maybe he had the hiccups ;)

DH and a Barred owl that had been rolled by a station wagon. The lady was so upset, she was standing in the road waving cars around him until we got there.

I love all of your pictures. So are the bats not afraid of you - like the momma with all of her babies. They are all so cute. I can't say enough good things about you wonderful people that rescue and take care of animals until they can be released again. Thank you!

star_stuff I started the oregano and the parsley in styrofoam cups but left them outside and then transplanted them into the containers after they germinated. The rest of the seeds were direct-sown in place except for the chives and the basil. The basil reseeded itself from that container last year. What's there in the containers will stay there now, and eventually I'll add some plants to several more of the containers. Some are self-watering, some are not. I learned my lesson last summer about what to plant in containers. I had no IDEA that White Velvet okra would get to be so huge on the back deck in those containers. They were more than 12 feet tall, and the trunks had to be cut with a chain-saw, they were that tough and big in diameter. So I planned carefully this winter for those containers. Most will have herbs in them. Two will have Swiss chard, and seven will have cowpeas in them. Maybe none of those plants will be monsters. I've grown cowpeas in the garden, but the deer really have decimated them in the past so I'm hoping we can get enough for side-dishes if I grow them on the deck this year. I guess we'll see. :-)

Thank you everyone! Already I'm starting to see flower buds forming on my dianthus, the nicotiana and a verbascum has a flower stalk on it too. When it stops raining I'll take pics of the entire beds to show you what they look like. Proudgm, I got my plant markers from Paw Paw Everlast Label Co. I just used a paint marker and wrote the names of the daylilies and hostas on them. There really was no planning involved, I just grew a bunch of seeds of plants that I wanted to try and then found places for most of them. Some of them I had planned where they were going to be, like the ones in the Dracula bed, but a lot of them I just started sticking them here and there to fill up my new beds. Now I have more seeds I'm going to start to fill in the bare spots, some this summer and some this winter. Starting from seed is much easier, fun and rewarding the WS method than indoors. You have loads of pretty seedlings today! These are my favorite ones: Number 1 has good color and a nice edge with teeth! Number 4 has good, dark purple color and a nice green throat. I like the way it has white edging on both the petals and sepals. Number 11 is a gorgeous polychrome with teeth, much in the tradition of Brother Charles. Being a bitone/bicolor lover, Number 17 appeals to me a lot. I like its watermark, yellow to green throat, and gold edge with teeth. Congrats on some very promising seedlings! Debra

Thank you....that's it, FULL MOON!!! Well, I'll be looking for a source to get one for next winter. Not the right time to get it now. I only have THREE, could always use a little more beautiful shade, and a good view from every window of the house.

This is so interesting. I'd love to know more about your work. Are the bats kept in cages until they are well enough to be released? When released do they seek out their "flock?" Looks like one is eating mealworms; is that what they all eat? I wonder how they know it's food when they are used to catching food on the fly, right?

Thanks for all your good work. I know it really is WORK.

We once had a mama fruit bat and her four babies hit the window of our home...

We had a covered front porch that I put them on, in a box with the lid partially open (I can't remember anymore...but it may have been rainy)...I went back out to check on them later and she was gone...and had taken one baby with her. Later she came back and took them one by one.

I think when she hit the window it knocked her out..unless the play dead. But they must have all been okay.

This happened during daylight. I was surprised that she was flying around during the day...do they do that?

I love the pictures. Thanks for posting them. What a wonderful interesting life you have. My biggest life regret is that I did not do the things way back when I could have to get me into some kind of wildlife rehab. You and Marilyn who rehabs opossums are a gift to all beings, not just animals. Too many of us humans take wildlife for granted.
