Let's start with my Dracula themed daylily bed -

Last but not least, the center portion of my mainly purple and white bed. On the fence are white morning glories and two clematis, a white and a purple, in the very back more fragrant cloud nicotiana, verbascum violetta, some purchased phlox, more of that white veronica, purple asters, clethra hummingbird, daylilies and some others I didn't mention or that are too small to even see, and two rose of sharon.

This is my first year winter sowing, and I have had very good luck growing most of the seeds I sowed, I still have a few containers which the seedlings seem to be frozen in time and don't want to grow, but they are still to small to move. I might give them a very light dose of some miracle grow to see if that helps them along. I have more to show, but this will be it for now. Hope you have enjoyed!

The plants all look healthy and will grow like gangbusters in July. I have many beds that look exactly the same right now...lots of green tiny ws plants! Hubby put down a sprinkling of fertilizer (we only do this once a season)this past weekend.

Since many of your plants are perennials, next year will be when you really see the show!

star_stuff I started the oregano and the parsley in styrofoam cups but left them outside and then transplanted them into the containers after they germinated. The rest of the seeds were direct-sown in place except for the chives and the basil. The basil reseeded itself from that container last year. What's there in the containers will stay there now, and eventually I'll add some plants to several more of the containers. Some are self-watering, some are not. I learned my lesson last summer about what to plant in containers. I had no IDEA that White Velvet okra would get to be so huge on the back deck in those containers. They were more than 12 feet tall, and the trunks had to be cut with a chain-saw, they were that tough and big in diameter. So I planned carefully this winter for those containers. Most will have herbs in them. Two will have Swiss chard, and seven will have cowpeas in them. Maybe none of those plants will be monsters. I've grown cowpeas in the garden, but the deer really have decimated them in the past so I'm hoping we can get enough for side-dishes if I grow them on the deck this year. I guess we'll see. :-)

All I can say is - Wow! I'd read your earlier post about not having to move and leave your new beds, but seeing what you've created there, I have a much deeper appreciation for how happy you must have been to STAY PUT!!! I KNOW that both the seed starting and the planting were TON of work (as only one who has been there can know..) and I am so glad you will be there for year 2 of your perennials. All I can say is that in year 3, you are going to FLIP at how beautiful it is and everyone around you will think you spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars on "pop in" perennial plants and will have a hard time believing that you grew each and every cluster of plants from seed. But you'll know...and be SO proud. Oh, and can I borrow that 14 year old boy? And a few of his friends from the sports teams? I went to lift a bale of promix this morning and thought - gosh, I've gotten completely out of shape this winter. Starting the spring planting maddness is going to be rough! A crew of 14 year olds would be perfect.

Wow, thank you for looking and for all the kind words. All of you inspire me on a daily basis. :) Medo- I love weird colored things too. LOL. Bonnie- I'm glad you like the shape! It was kind of scary digging up so much grass, I felt like I was going to get in trouble or something, LOL. DH told me that he thought the shape slightly resembled a golf course.....he may just be bitter though. :p Terrene- Our soil is mostly heavy sticky clay, the new beds were very light and almost dust. I amended everything with homemade compost and store bought manure. I add seaweed to my compost, that's my only secret. I've sworn off chemical fertilizer and only add it to the containers. I'm trying to figure out which plant you're talking about....the one to the left of the Forsythia and to the left of the Hosta are Solomons Seal that a nice friend traded with me. Trumpet vines would be awesome, unfortunately I think my neighbors would object. I overheard one of them say my garden looked like an "weedy jungle" and the one on the other side thinks I'm insane already. Lynne- I've lived vicariously through this forum for years! I'd be more than happy to share some of the pink Hollyhock seed when they're ready. I grew the pink and peach from a mixed bag of seed and according to my mom they were gathered from a pink, peach and a darker maroon plant (which I have yet to see). I have some of the original seed ready to go right now if anyone would like them. Just shoot me an email! :)

They are celosia Pink Candle and they are annuals. I am assuming the feathery part will make seed when they dry. I should have lots of seeds if you are interested. I don't know when they will die back as this is the first year that I have grown them. I haven't posted any of the seeds I have been collecting yet. I will probably do most of them at one time later in the season.

Thank you so much for the pics! I love your gardens..they look very nice, and I love daylilies. :) I got five new ones last year and wouldn't you know.....only the tags on the summer wine and the strawberry candy survived the winter.
I hope you will post more pics when your babies are a little bit more grown up, too. :)

Wow I am so impressed with your gardens! It looks like you had wonderful success with your WSing. I can't wait to see what it looks like later this year so please post more pics. Where did you get your plant stakes?

Your Dracula bed idea is awesome Karen. I grew some Love Lies Bleeding too and am fascinated with them.

Thank you everyone! Already I'm starting to see flower buds forming on my dianthus, the nicotiana and a verbascum has a flower stalk on it too. When it stops raining I'll take pics of the entire beds to show you what they look like. Proudgm, I got my plant markers from Paw Paw Everlast Label Co. I just used a paint marker and wrote the names of the daylilies and hostas on them. There really was no planning involved, I just grew a bunch of seeds of plants that I wanted to try and then found places for most of them. Some of them I had planned where they were going to be, like the ones in the Dracula bed, but a lot of them I just started sticking them here and there to fill up my new beds. Now I have more seeds I'm going to start to fill in the bare spots, some this summer and some this winter. Starting from seed is much easier, fun and rewarding the WS method than indoors. Plus, much easier on my bank account!
