Cute and functional little pot holder

Here's a little pot holder I bought at an antique booth in an antique mall yesterday for $2.50. Isn't it cute? I had to sew up a hole on the side of it but it didn't take much. I love it because it only fits half of my hand with room for my thumb. Maybe it's a child size? Not sure, but I still like the way it fits on my hand, like a flat pot holder only there's room for a thumb. Not sure what it's made of other than it's heavy crochet material. I can see where it might not work when an oven mitt would be better, but still the design is cute for hot handles on tea kettles.

Well heck yeah, lol. Wouldn't one be cute in the shape of a dog or kitty's face? I think mine is suppose to be strawberry.

I myself looked for ages for the half bowls fr walls and could not find anyone to fit my indoor need. So I ended up making myself three just similar to wolly pockets...I used felter from jo ann stores, and a protective liner of plastic just in the side that goes against the wall and the bottom to protect from when you water. it has been 7 months and my variety of plants have been thriving and looking great on them. The secret is that because the felter, there is so much aeration that the soil dryes pretty fast. So you need once and a while take them from the wall to inside your sink and water throughly, let drain and hang them again. I do that once a month and it is more than enough, out of that I water kinda of half cup of water once a week for each pocket. I am sure your son will love because it makes a modern green wall looking which is not feminine, but very unisex type of decor.

Yes Ines, I was planning on doing that, but I'm rooting a bunch of hoya cuttings now that I received from some generous people, and want to see which medium works best for me before I cut any of my plants. I also just received a similar sized cutting of Heuschkeliana, so I might just cut that one too and then have 4 cuttings in the pot....that will look really nice! The only problem I foresee is that the plastic cup is already completely filled with roots from the one in there, so I'd have to get a longer cup or something to accomodate more cuttings/roots. Notanatural, make sure you update us on how the fishbowl thing works for you if you try it. Good luck with it :-)

Hi artemis, your layout is looking good with the deep counters (I am a little envious that you can fit those in all around), and I like the suggestions for a larger prep sink and moving the cooktop over as far as you can given the window constraints. I remember that you were going to deepen the counter behind the sink for splashes right? Perhaps your software limits the type of sink you could put in, but I strongly suggest that you get a large single bowl sink or low divide sink with a single offset drain. You could either get a stages type sink with the integral drainboard, or have runnels cut into your countertop for drainage of large items. It will be good to have a large sink to hide dirty dishes and pots since your main sink is so visible from the dining area. I have the stages sink (with countertop runnels also) and use both a perforated holder perched across the sink and a minimalist dish drainer either on the runnels or on the integral shelf for drying things. When company comes, it is easy to put the dish drainer under the perforated holder and there is nothing on the countertop or the integral shelf. The offset drain would allow you to put a trash bin underneath half of the sink. Linelle - I don't eat fish (I have, but I prefer not to). I don't like to even wade in waters where they swim for fear of touching them. I have, at times, been so startled by an unexpected photo of a fish when turning the page in a magazine that I have actually thrown the magazine across the room - just an automatic response. I can't pinpoint the exact moment when this fear came on, but I was pretty small. I do remember being in a pet store when I was maybe four or five years old, and running my hand along a table full of sale items. My hand stopped on something that felt odd, and when I looked to see what it was, it was a dried-out, dead fish. Horrifying! I believe I started having fish dreams not too long after that. I'd wake up screaming in the night, certain that a fish was in the bed with me. My poor mom, being awakened at dark-thirty and having to quell the unreasonable fears of a very insistent little girl! When I was a tween, I used to like to go fishing with my grandfather when I visited my grandparents' lake house in the summer. He would bait the hook for me and take any fish I caught off the hook, and I thought it was great fun. I guess I wasn't horribly phobic at that time. One day he and I went fishing out in his boat. I caught 17 fish, and we took them home with us. My grandmother deemed them too small to fix for our dinner, so she decided to make a sort of stew out of them for the dog. She put them in a pressure cooker (I have no idea why), thinking they were all dead. Something happened and once the thing heated up, we heard hideous thrashing inside the pot. After awhile it stopped, but when she lifted the lid, there was a nasty film on top and a few eyeballs floating around. Again - horrifying stuff. The dog ate it up though. Once I told a boy in high school about my phobia, and shortly thereafter I opened my locker to find a huge dead fish inside. The boy thought that was just the funniest practical joke ever, and chased me up and down the halls holding it by the tail. I remember trying desperately to keep my cool and not show how agitated I was, but I fought not to burst into tears - or pass out. (I know this is getting to be way too long ...) A few years ago I decided that I wanted to overcome my phobia once and for all and actually sought counseling for it. I also tried to do a bit of immersion work on my own, and DH and I went to a local aquarium one afternoon. It's long been difficult for me to even get close to a fish, in any manner - even those behind glass. The salt water aquariums didn't bother me terribly; after all, those fish are often beautifully colored or comical looking. The freshwater tanks, however, caused me to panic. I forced myself to remain seated next to one that was built low to the ground with glass walls, with the various lake-living fish swimming right up to me on all sides and behind me. I couldn't do it. I sat there and just bawled and hyperventilated, and DH got me the hell out of there. Around that time we were traveling regularly to Mexico, and scuba diving was very popular where we stayed. In spite of my fish phobia, it sounded like a lot of fun, and I went so far as to take a few scuba lessons here, but did not go on to be certified. I didn't like the feeling of breathing underwater and couldn't get past a feeling of simmering panic. I know I wouldn't have made certification anyway - at least not with the instructor I had - as his group went to a local man-made lake to receive their certification, and the waters were often murky and always filled with curious fish. Pretty sure that seeing something like this would have induced dangerous panic in me! Gosh, I am sorry to have told you more than you ever wanted to know. I've not been asked about this in a long time, and I guess my memories just came flooding back!

That was probably made out of what we call kitchen cotton. Sugar & Cream, Peaches and Cream or Bernat kitchen cotton. I love it! Yes, a dog or cat's face would be cute. And I do think your's looks like a strawberry. I think I will try making one. I certainly have enough kitchen cotton to do it! I've been making dish cloths and pot holders like crazy lately. It won't be fancy, but I'm going to give it a try.

I hope you do Tami and post photos. Flowers would be pretty,too. One note about the weave, or whatever you who crochet call it, it could have been crocheted a little tighter, not as loose as my strawberry, because I could feel the heat of the kettle handle more than I expected - not terribly, but noticeably.

Make the top green and the underside of the hand and the thumb yellow, put two bigs eyes on top and you'll have a frog puppet.

Frog is very elegant, refined, and sophisticated. Of course he and Nephew take tea every afternoon. "Something sweet?" Ladybugs! "Something savory?" Junebugs!

Oh my gosh, Sue! You are great, thanks for the link. I'm going to forward it to my sister-in-law who is thinking of making some to sell at her craft fairs. Woo-hoo!

I wonder what year these "vintage" patterns are from? Maybe it says and I just haven't looked over the entire site yet.

Sue, thanks for the link. I have not had time to try it yet, but will try to remember to post pics when I do. I am still working on hot pads for a shower gift tomorrow, have been on the road chasing trains all day, and have to leave again in a few minutes. While riding in the truck chasing trains is not the time to try something new! I did get one and a half finished of the pattern I am working on, tho! I might be able to try one tomorrow after the shower.

That strawberry is very cute!! I'm glad you posted a picture using it to show how small it is, maybe a child's size? My daughter loves strawberries and would love it.

Jasdip, My DH loves trains. Especially steam trains. We frequently go to different places to just sit and watch trains. Occasoinally, we will actually chase them. Yesterday and today, the 765 steam locomotive, think Polar Express engine, was doing staff appreciation tours between two towns within an hour and a half from us. They made three runs yesterday, and two today. There are many places along the track that you can stop to get pictures. This is what we were doing. Driving back and forth between the two towns and getting video and still pics. A few years ago Union Pacific did a promo run thru Iowa, and, I think, Nebraska. Maybe another state. I can't remember. We drove to Iowa and chases, with many others, including law enforcement! Most who do this are very considerate about thier driving. The police were there for order and because they wanted to chase it too! Some were leading the pack! I drove my big Expedition with DH sitting in the back seat where he could take video and still pics from either side of the car without me being in his way, depending on which side of the car the track was on at the time. If the file isn't too big, I am going to try to include a pic from yesterday. He tends to shoot with the biggest file the camera will support, for those familiar with DSLR cameras, he shoots in RAW file, so I don't know if it will work without re-sizing it. I haven't had time to do anything to any of them. I had a bridal shower to attend today, chaufuering my mom & aunt, plus picking up a few groceries for mom & dad. My butt is whooped again! Sorry, the file was too big and message was rejected. I'll have to re size a few and post them.
