Update on husbands cataract surgery.

He went for his one week follow up yesterday, the lens isn't working properly for him. He is so disappointed. Back next week to try again. I feel bad for him, but, I told him at least they can do something right away to solve the problem. I couldn't see for a year after bad LASIK.

what happened do they know why it is not working right? was it the placement or something else.
I am wanting those same lenses when it is time since I have such bad astigmatism.

I started my surgery Jan 27 this year and took the left eye 3 months to heal before the second eye was done. My left eye was a high risk eye and took him twice as long to do it. There was a hole behind the lens that he removed and a danger of the replacement lens being sucked into the hole. April 15th I had the right done and had a prescription for glasses a month later. I need glasses, my left could not be improved with glasses but the right eye could. I am lucky to be able to see out of the left eye. I do have good vision now. I recommend anyone having a cataract removed..... do not buy the $1,100 special lens for astigmatism. I should not have. I have had astigmatism all my life and it was no problem ever.

HU - I had my right eye done at the end of Jan 2018 (the left done last April). I still see some flares in the right from my outside flood light (that I turn on when I take the dog out). I go in next month for a 6 month check up and plan to ask the doctor about it. I quit most night driving numerous yrs back. I decided I didn't need to do that anymore and with the crazoid drivers here in AZ and I just plan around it. I do sometimes go to the W down the road in the evening and it's dark out when I come home - but I stay on my back roads and off of the HWY where the nuts are...I have no problems with that. I have no restrictions on driving tho - just my own preference not to get into the craziness at night. I did hear or read recently that there are glasses available now that do away with the flare / glare of lights from other cars, street lights etc. Don't know who makes them or how much they are tho. something to look into if the streams/flares continue. And be sure to let your doctor know about them. To others who might be interested, I found the pre-op preparation the worst. that was me knowing I wouldn't drive for a few days, shouldn't bend or lift either so I prepared things around the house so I wouldn't need to. Turned my gal water jugs into half gal and sat them up higher (for ease of filling my counter water filter). Same with dog food - put into a few smaller containers to use those few days and prepared some meals to have in the fridge / freezer so I wouldn't need to do that either. I normally slept on my left side, so that part worried me some, but I had no problem sleeping on the right side for a few nights. I find now that I more often sleep on the right side since that time. I'm now a bi-side sleeper! and I can even sleep on my back. I just took it easy for a few days after each surgery and all was fine. but I am so glad it is over! I do have glasses I wear while on the computer or reading, but don't need them for TV anymore and can read print on the screen (like news prog or shopping channels).

Thanks all. I'd hoped you would post, Sleeperblues! I'm still unsure about having an IV with anesthesia for my left eye -- supposed to happen in two weeks. I don't believe I received any injection at the eye this time -- just a lot of numbing drops. It's not that I had a problem with the IV sedative, just that I wonder if it is really necessary. (If I was paying for this independently -- without Medicare and supplementary -- I'd be pretty upset that this is "routine".) On to another related question... I had the cataract surgery Thursday, so I'm now on Day Two with my new Toric lens. I do not have as good distance vision in my right, operated eye, as I have with my glasses correcting my left eye, and I have fuzzy middle distance vision. Maybe this will improve? Or, have I received the wrong prescription? I need to feel more confident before I have the left eye operated on. At the MD's office, my right eye tested well enough "to pass the driver's license requirements". BTW, my opthalmologist said he has often done surgery without the IV anesthesia, but only for people who can't tolerate or just don't want "drugs in their system". Eccentric -- I can really feel your pain at not being sedated. My first sinus surgery began before I was adequately sedated. This was in a teaching hospital with interns working under both surgeon and anesthetist. They were breaking my cheekbones to permit more drainage. (I don't think this is done anymore.) I gasped. The MD saw what was happening and yelled at the anesthetist. Great. Then I was given so much sedation that I could not move or speak. I was terrified I would choke to death on my own saliva. No one noticed this. In recovery, I gradually regained movement and just sobbed and sobbed. (Guess I could have used that darn Versed then, huh?)

I can't imagine separating the cataract removal and the lens implantation. After all, cataracts are simply cloudy lenses. It's not as though a cataract is some kind of growth on our lenses; it's the whole lens, which has become cloudy. When it's removed, we need a new lens--I would think immediately. I had the surgery 12 years ago, a week apart. I wish I'd been offered the option to have it done without Versed, the memory eraser. I asked, but was told Versed was essential. They promised to use the bare minimum. (Yeah, right.) I'd worn glasses since first grade, and was nearsighted with astigmatism. Toric lenses were needed to deal with that, and I paid for them out of pocket. My doctor suggested the "mini-mono" option: distance vision for my dominant eye, and closer focus for the other. It's worked well for me. I've never heard that it affects depth perception, and I certainly haven't noticed that. As for a lot of follow-up, I didn't experience that either. After a couple of months I noticed a problem and was told moisture had built up under the lens. They said it was common (I wish they'd told me it was a possibility before it happened), and the fix was simple: I sat in a chair while a machine used a laser to create a tiny hole in the lens. It took one second, if that. I would make certain the surgeon is experienced. A friend of mine was referred by her eye doctor to a GP who had "taken classes and got a certificate." Um . . . no. The other thing I wish I'd known beforehand is that the corrective lenses might not provide the right amount of correction forever. It never occurred eo me to ask about this; I just assumed I'd never need glasses again. But recently I've noticed that road signs aren't always easy to read. The optometrist said it's normal for eyes to change as we age, and I might need driving glasses. Even though I wish I'd known this, I would have gotten the surgery with the same new lenses anyway. Very happy with the outcome overall.

sorry to hear about the set back, but tell him he's got a LOT of kt'ers pulling for him!! fil is going thru macular degeneration, and it's awful...he gets shots in his eye!

the one thing I don't see mention after surgery, are the otc vitamins...mother's doc put her on them asap...

What a disappointment for him....like everyone, of course he wanted a good result. I wish they weren't having to do it over, but hopefully this time it will be perfect and he'll never have to concern himself with it again. Tell him stay patient...is there such a thing as a patient man :)

Sorry to hear its not been what he expected. Maybe its just an adjustment for him. I know that when I had my cataract surgery I couldn't see well and I thought why did I do this but eventually, may have been weeks I was able to see correctly but I do wear glasses with a low prescription. A year or so later I'm glad that I had the surgery. Good luck to him.

Very disappointing for him. Sorry to hear it's not going well. I know my mom has been through alot with her eyes and it always takes so much longer to see clearly than she expects.
Hopefully the next lens is the right one.

Did he get the multifocal lenses? ReStor or another brand like that? I did a lot of research before my cataract surgery and found too many people who could not adjust to them. I even met one woman who was in misery with them. Maybe it takes more time for the brain to adjust.

Anyway, I decided against them but still made a mistake in getting the monocular vision, so I have to wear glasses. Sucks.

Hope he gets a good outcome eventually.

Oh, Terilyn, I just now saw your posting. I'm so sorry to hear that your husband is having problems. He chose the Trulign lens, right? Please keep us updated on how he's doing. Let us know if the doctor figures out what "went wrong." Was it a defective lens? Is your husband still opting for the Trulign, or another lens? I'm hoping, wishing, and praying for the best for him!

I can relate...when I had my last cataract done three years ago, I waited a month and it still did not clear up...went for a lens exchange, and it cleared up immediately to better than 20/20.

Now I just had my other one done a week ago, and so far, it is not clearing up as I had hoped...but if I have to do another lens exchange, I won't hesitate to do so. I am anxiously waiting for my check-up Thursday. I realized going I to this that eyes that had RK would be much more difficult to correct, but it is what it is....only it is disappointing.

I wish him good luck and keep us posted.

They replaced the lens today, said the other one had slipped. Used the same brand. He said this time the procedure was very painful. Follow up tomorrow.

Gosh, Terilyn. Poor DH!! Hope his pain is gone and this time it works. We'll all be thinking and keeping our fingers crossed for him!
