Just plain boiling water will kill them if you put it on first thing in the morning. Just don't get it on any plant you want to live!

I agree, the article suggested boiling water, but it wasn't clear if it just killed the top or the entire root.

I've used plain boiling water before, works pretty well.

Here's the treatment.

In early spring, before they, like people, get big and bitter, you pick the dandelion leaves.

Put 'em in a pot, with some water, add a little salt.

Boil the water for a couple of minutes.

Pour most of the water off.

Put the greens on a plate, add a little butter.

Eat.

First greens of the spring.

Librarian told me this afternoon that her husband has got instructions ... to pick lamb's quarters, when he sees them, and treat them in similar fashion, as I'd given them some of those weeds out of my garden a week or so ago, and they enjoyed them.

Some use the dandelions to make wine, but I have no idea how to do that ... does one use just the blooms?

Why kill 'em ... when you can put them to a useful purpose?

If you pour boiling water on them first thing in the morning with the sun beating on them all day, they can't absorb the light needed to grow, and it kills roots and all. Works on thistles too, or anything else plant wise you want to kill. Just be careful where you pour that boiling water. Don't get it on the plants you want to live!

Vinegar works well, bleach works well and the boiling water works well too. Salted water will kill them if you want them gone for a long time like in a driveway, sidewalk or patio. As for the lawn, I just let them go. Mow them. They don't last long. The dandelion season is pretty much over here.

Keep in mind these are non-selective weed killers so stuff around it will be damaged or killed along with the dandelions.

I used to really get into taking care of the lawn, but now, I don't care. Even with minimal care mine looks as good or better than the neighbors who use lawn services too.

I've tried both boiling water and straight vinegar, with no luck. Maybe it doesn't get hot enough here? Maybe I did this in the afternoon--will have to try it in the morning.

OJ--Just be sure the lawn where you pick those dandi's hasn't been sprayed! The comic strip "Pickles" has been exploring the subject, with Earl losing the battle.

My Grandmother (quite the gardener, she had fantastic roses) used to pour boiling water on weeds. And she would pick dandelion greens and us them in salad. They tasted very bitter.

I use my wooden handled, metal pointed tool and pluck them out. Gone forever.

I do too, jmc01. It's a weeding tool, aka an asparagus cutter. works great. I also use it to lift wild onion bulbs.
