Steps and handrails! & one step at a time

Being as I'm getting OLDER, I rely on handrails for going up and down steps.

Several friends don't have handrails on their front steps, so I have to ask for assistance.

How am I gonna handle those steps to those castles in the next few weeks?

Friend told me, to start, which I should have long time ago, going up and down my neighbors steps, who lives over me.

Also, I have to step one step, bring both feet together, then do the next step, and so on and so forth.

Sigh

But I still gotta use those handrails.

Do you use the handrails or do you "wing" it?

I have had both of my knees replaced and don't do steps well at all. There are times when I have to wing it and the instructions you were given works for me. I also use a walking stick if I know ahead of time I will be doing a lot of steps. You might consider getting one, especially since you will be doing a lot of walking.

That's on my list to ask doctor, tomorrow. If he will write a prescription for one of those folding walking canes.

If not I'll just buy the one I saw at WalMart.

Lynn, Are you using 'Windows XP', 'Vista', or some other operating system? You mentioned 'Superantispyware' removing "several spywares". Have you also run a full scan with your 'anti-virus' program? If not, update and run a full scan. Something else I overlooked when I read your initial post, I see you're using AOL 9.1. I'm still using AOL 9.0 SE, so there may be some changes to the way things are done in 9.1 as far as repairing the software. I'm not even sure they have the same features in 9.1 so let's forget about 'rebuilding the AOL adapter' for now. Someone else using that version of AOL will have to jump in here. If you have the 'AOL' icon down in the system tray (by the clock) you can right click that and see what options there are. System Restore is painless and if you don't get the results you want you just 'undo' the restore. If you had any kind of virus or spyware infection and you restore to a time when your machine was infected, yes, it will restore those infections, but you can always run your anti-virus and anti-spyware applications again to remove them. I can't say for certain whether or not 'system restore' will affect your bookmarks but it is always a good idea to back up anything on your computer that you cannot afford to lose or want the hastle of having to replace. There can never be enough said about the importance of backing up important data! I use Acronis True Image which makes an image of the complete hard drive, sector by sector, that will restore everything including operating system, programs, documents, pictures, data, etc. to the 'T'. This is on a second drive in my PC in case my primary drive should fail. I also have an external hard drive where I back up 'My Documents'. "I also ran ccleaner right after the updates (I thought at first that that was the problem) - should I rerun that as well?" No, running CCleaner again is not going to fix the problem, nor do I see where CCleaner would have created your problem, unless by chance, if you also used the 'Registry' feature in CCleaner, it may have removed something. Anytime you use any kind of registry cleaner it should have the option of making a backup in case things go wrong, which is exactly why most cleaners, some don't, have the backup option. Either that or create a 'system restore' point before you use it. Using a 'registry cleaner' is a hot topic. Some swear by them, others swear at them! I personally have use Macecraft 'Reg Supreme' for years with no ill effects. "There may have been an easier way to do this, but I just copied and pasted all the bookmarks I made_____". There is: Internet Explorer has an 'import/export' feature for transferring or backing up your cookies and favorites. Click on 'File' in the Menu bar at the top of the IE browser, select 'Import/Export', and follow the Wizard. You can save them to a file on your computer for retrieval later if you should need to do so using the same wizard. I made a folder called 'Backups' in the 'My Documents' folder where I store a copy of my 'cookies' and 'favorites'. In Firefox, I'm still using version 2.0.0.16, if you go to 'Bookmarks' in the Menu bar and select 'Organize bookmarks' and click on 'File', you'll find an 'Import' and 'Export' wizard. Drink some 'brave' juice and try the system restore first to see if that works. Witz

The problem you are likely to have is in attaching to something solid. When someone grabs a stair rail it must hold them from falling in any direction. Factoring in the leverage they have from a rail 36 inches above the surface and you have a tremendous lever arm and a lot of force at the attachment point. Wooden posts need to be relatively large (3x3 net) to work as supports for a handrail, and need to go into the ground at least half the height above the ground or be fastened solidly to masonry using expansion anchors. The anchors need to be spread out enough to create a solid attachment. 6-8 inches apart is typical. Other methods include driving 2 inch angle iron into the ground and then bolting the wood to the angle iron (through fasteners, not lag screws). Steel may also be mounted in holes in the masonry and the post bored to match. The metal would be at least Â¾ inch square tubing (just like a metal post). I would consider using about 1 inch diameter round steel rod mounted into bored holes in the stone and substrate (you need at least 6-8 inches) and then a mating hole in the bottom of the post for at least 10-12 inches deep. The picture you have does not comply with modern codes since there are too many steps to not have a handrail (though local interpretation and codes may allow this setup for exterior landscaping steps). If it is actually entering a house you will need to comply with the code (no landscaping escape).

Here I thought you were making a "trip" to the bathroom. Hoped you wouldn't be in too much discomfort by the time you arrived. As a matter of fact, considering the, " ... one step forward, two steps back ...", scenario ... ... maybe it'd be best to travel backwards. As a matter of fact ... ... are you sure that you haven't been doing some of that during the remodelling/renovation? When did you start - back in late summer, sometime, wasn't it? I hope that your neighbour hasn't got too bored with your visits. Or have you had a Johnny-on-the-Spot in the backyard? It's getting pretty chilly for depending on one of them, these days! Thank you all for suggestions! I really like the rounded steps and think they might help soften all the harsh lines of my house. Tibbrix and Kswl, my contractor mentioned a concrete base with a stone or brick facade and I am researching that idea this week so am grateful for the picture and very happy to hear you are happy with your steps Kswl. Pal, I would love a rounded roof above the steps but with my vestibule I worry it might look too "roofy". My neighbors have open steps with side benches that I like just not sure if appropriate for my home. I would most certainly widen the steps by 20inches each side, to match the width of my vestibule if I did benches. As far as what my house style is, I called it a tudor for that is what my town records have it under. My architect says the pitch of the gables and the prominent front facing brick chimney feature could classify it as such but it is most certainly a hybrid of many styles :(. Here is a natural cedar shingle house in my style that I like as inspiration. It has the rounded front roof over the steps. I am within a quick walk to the beach but have no water views so not sure if this is too coastal looking for my house.

Glenda: I have to use a handrail too. IF a person will let me steady myself with a hand on their arm or shoulder, I can do it without but still prefer a handrail. I wish you all the best on your trip.

I use the handrails now and on my porch steps, I do one step at a time.
My DD has been running up and down the stairs at the beach.....long stairway and she does two at a time.
Her time will come......I used to be able to do what she does at her age.
I think a quad cane would work well but may be too bulky for your travels abroad. Think about one for after you get home.
At the castles you will be visiting.....take your time and go at your own pace.
Have a great time but don't overdo it!

I am at the point that I use a cane anytime there is walking involved.

Fortunately I seldom go anywhere that has steps, but if there were, I would use the handrail.

About canes. I have a quad from when I had my knees replaced, but I now have a regular cane and much prefer it to the quad. The quad is clunky because with each step there are 4 tips that have to be set down, where with the cane there is only one.

I hope you do well on your trip; sounds like it might be a challenge.

Glenda, use a cane. Forget the folding ones. Get a good solid one, and practice with it now.

I prefer using a cane when hiking. So much steadier.

Why NOT the folding one, Moni?

It has a little plastic case to carry it. Seems it would be easier to get in and out, and use when you need it, rather than carry one OUT with you all the time, when you might not need it.

In my house I have 14 steps from the upper level to the lower level. I have a hand rail and I use it. I have had one total knee replacement and the other one needs replaced. It is harder for me to go up than come down. My husband has had two total knee replacements, coming down the stairs he holds onto the railing and comes down backwards. He says it is easier that way. Good luck on working it out. I hope you have a great trip.

I'm older than you, Glenda, but I can't use my daughter's front steps at all because there is no railing. Luckily, when I moved in with them they put a ramp up to the back deck and I use my walker to go up and down with that. In looking at Kathsgarden's pictures of her recent trip and all the steps that are shown, I think boy, that is a trip I would have had to take 20 years ago but not now.

I've had handrails throughout my house since 2001. Both DH and I need them-he has MS, I have arthritis and residual deficits from a stroke. I feel nervous outdoors and use a cane when walking.

Also if you are going to visit these places as part of a tour (you probably are) talk it over with the guide and I'm sure he/she will be glad to assist you at any time without embarassing you.

I'm a year older than you Glenda and had knee replacement surgery last year(right only) left still needs it.I use a cane and have about 5 or 6 of them.I keep one in each of our cars(2) and several in the house.I have no stairs in this house a 50's ranch,thank goodness.When i go places i always have a cane,and if they have a ramp and stairs,i take the ramp.When i go to pick up meds at the drugstore,i always take my cane in case i have to stand in line.

You do whatever work at this stage of life,and if you're gonna have to do a lot of stairs,i hope they have rails.

Best idea....get two handsome hunks to tag along and they can escort you up and down the stairs....good idea huh...!!!!

You may be lucky and find that many of the older castles have had discreet handrails installed for people like us! They have stone floors and the last thing that the castles want to do is settle a lawsuit from someone falling.

A cane would be good and indicate that you do have problems and people are more alert to help/offer/etc. You might check at Walmart, or your medical supply place. The other suggestion is a walking stick, but these do need to be fitted to you as they are longer than a cane. Hikers use them all the time. The do steady a person. Please, do not be afraid to ask for help as the tour guides are very use to it and it is much easier that broken bones. Us older (seniors) don't seem to bounce like we use to.
There is a good variety of canes avaiable and a medical supply store will show you the correct one. May be a bit more but will fit you better.

I had a walking cane seat for Mediterranean cruise, but it was hard to get around with. Don't want to use it this time.

Think they are also called golfers seats.

I've carried and used a folding cane in my purse for over 5 years.
Take the folding one. if it holds me, with my weak hands...it'll do for you.

Most tourist attractions in the UK have handrails and very pleasant people who are there to help you navigate stairs if you need so.
I recall such a person in Buckingham Palace, who actually went for a chair for me to sit on when I had felt unsteady after ascending a long staircase.

I think people in the UK are very helpful....had a young man hoist my bag over the trestle at a railway station, and another haul it up the stairs at Kings Cross. Oh, and the sweet girl who popped up to take my bag up to the 6th floor in Bath, where there was no elevator!! You'll do fine.

Oh Glenda, I understand about steps. I don't see as well as I would like to, and steps are my undoing!! I can go up pretty well, but it is handrail or DH for coming down. Even my 14 year old DGS is wonderful about waiting for me and giving me a hand. Be careful...we want you to come back safely and give us a guided tour of your trip.
