Drivers don't stop for funeral processions around here. It must be a regional thing. I was in Lubbock years ago and my cousin was driving. He pulled over for the funeral procession too.

All I know is it's illegal or at least rude to cut into a funeral procession. Every time I see one, I pull off and wait for every car to go by. It happens fairly often to me because the highway I take to work is the same one for two Veterans Cemeteries.

Most funeral processions here have police escorts, front, middle and end. They make you stop.

I would stop any way out of respect. That's what I was taught to do.

It was a police escorted procession, front and rear.
We did not pull over, but just slowed down and then stopped in our lane while it passed. I think it is just common courtesy here to do that. No one was the least bit bothered that we missed a couple of green lights. It felt very honorable.

Around here, you do not stop for a funeral procession when it is in the opposite lanes of a 4 lane highway. This would be akin to creating a traffic stoppage and hazard.

The major infraction in my neck of the woods is failing to yield at an intersetion after the lights have changed. In my state, a funeral procession is treated as single vehicle, thus, after the lead car travels though a green light, the entire procession is permitted to complete its pass be it a left or right turn, or straight through even though the light may have changed. The rule is, do not enter the intersection until it has cleared. To help with this rule, funeral parlors plant little magnetic flags on your car to identify you as part of a procession. Without this identification, you may be treated as ordinary traffic.

That seems like such an old-fashioned thing to do. A lovely, old-fashioned thing to do. I wish we could bring back more like it.

When a good friend's mother passed away, we were driving through downtown Omaha with the funeral procession. (this was several years ago) There was one very old looking black man who was walking on the sidewalk who stopped and put his hat over his heart. I was very impressed and I know how it can bring tears.

I've lived long enough I remember when people always did that and you never jumped into or crossed through a procession line of cars, even if it was long. That was called "respect" in those days...Sadly that has all but disappeared.

When I was growing up my parents always turned their lights on when a funeral procession drove by. I don't live in an area that funeral processions would ever drive by so I don't know what the protocol is around here. So many new cars now automatically turn their headlights on when the car starts so turning your lights on for a funeral really loses it's impact. If I happened upon a procession, I would probably stop if it didn't cause a problem.

It's always done here in N.E. TX too -vehicles pull over and stop on the shoulder no matter which direction procession is going. The only exception is Interstate Highways, but a few still do.

Police Officers holding traffic at intersections remove their hat/cap & hold them over their heart as do many on foot if in town. During my parent's procession, that gesture of respect meant more to me than I can ever say.
I couldn't comprehend how the sky could still be blue, the sun shine or flowers bloom in a world from which my Mother was gone.

That is done here where we live too. That was a wonderful gesture that young man did. Very touching.

Here we always stop where ever we are and let the procession pass. But last week we were on the interstate coming back from vacation and happened upon one. There was no way we could stop and I felt horrible about it. It just felt wrong and disrespectful to me.

Its nice to read that someone in this day and age respected the family and loved ones plus the person that passed away.

Wow, what a nice thing for this man to do. Obviously he was taught well, just wish more people were like that. This brings a tear to my eye and a smile to my face.

An old man walking in Atlanta stopped and put his hat on his heart during my Granddaddy's funeral in 2000. The police officer stopping traffic also gave a car "the what for" when they tried to go through the intersection during the funeral. The procession was quite long and we had to travel about 25 miles from one side of Atlanta to the other, using both I-75 and I-85. We tried to talk my Granny out of the procession but she insisted.

That old man was one of the most comforting parts of Granddaddy's funeral.

Everyone always stops and waits till the whole procession has passed. Last summer when we was in the procession for my uncle we were going on a county road and a young man mowing the lawn stopped the mower and got off standing at attention. I saw that young man at the store a couple of months later and thanked him for the respect he showed.

patches- It was so nice that you remembered the man and thanked him when you saw him. Just as important as his gesture.

Cars in funeral processions here drive with their lights on and have funeral home flags attached to the cars. If a bystander turned his car lights on, I'd be confused, thinking he was part of the procession.

We live near a very small military cemetery that is part of Fort Sheridan, Illinois. The graves date from the Civil War, but there are still vacant plots. There is a funeral home about two miles south.

One spring day this year DH and I were driving along this stretch of two lane road when traffic came to a halt. A pair of Clydesdales approached from the opposite direction, pulling a buckboard with the flag-draped casket of a serviceman. About thirty family members walked behind, bearing flowers, and some cars of mourners followed them. I don't think there was a dry eye on the road for the 20 minutes it took the wagon to pass. There was total silence except for the sound of the horses hooves and the creak of the buckboard. Lake Michigan was grey in the near distance. We could see the large white cross at the entrance to the cemetery.

The next day I called the funeral home to inquire about the deceased. He was Army, injured in Viet Nam.

Your stories are so wonderful. I guess I am not such a wuss to be brought to tears for such a wonderful gesture.
That is one of those memories that will be etched in all of our minds for life. Nothing but good can come from respect and the good manners of a caring soul.

Many folks in this area when meeting a funeral procession, with lights on and little "FUNERAL" flags on the lead cars, pull over and stop, when possible without causing increased risk. No police escorts that I've seen.

There are a number who don't.

There may be police escorts for servicepersons killed in Afghanistan, while travelling from air base to Toronto, but I think not.

Usually such a trip is publicized, howerver, and a substantial number of people gather on the overpassses over the freeway en route to honour the service person who has died.

In South Dakota and Iowa, people safely pull over to the side of the road out of respect. I don't think that here in Las Vegas, I have seen that...except for a member of our Law Enforcement...and I live within a block of a cemetery. I do...just because that is the way I was raised.

What that young delivery driver did is to be commended.

I actually can't remember the last funeral procession I saw. Neither my parents, sister or inlaws had one.

Here in Tyler, Tx. I see a lot of that and always do it. While it was sweet that he pulled over, he went one step further and put his hat over his heart. That was one good man!! How respectful!
