Cancer's struck my family again!!

My brother has breast cancer that has spread to the connective tissues. :(

He & I are the only siblings left out of 7 and he'll be 84 in September. He has heart disease + blocked arteries in his legs. Recently had stents in his heart and a defibrillator/pacemaker...dr. planned to do his legs later when he's a little healthier, so don't know now what this latest news will do to that.

I'll be going to see him in a few weeks. In the meantime, if you can spare some good thoughts and/or prayers for Woody, I'd appreciate it. Thanks, my friends!

I'm so sorry to hear that!! My aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer in her 80's,she said i'm not going to do anything about it,and she didn't.She lived to be 93,and died from pneumonia.

Suzieque...thank you so much. I just heard that the hospital may send her home tomorrow, they have her on a pump for pain and i am not sure if that will continue at home, but her dh said she wants to go home. Marie... I hope your DD and DH continue to improve. Thanks for the note, you have been so kind to me in the past. and helped me with other things. Ellie.... aw, thank you! I often feel, and say, that I wish I could be as articulate as some of you on here. I appreciate your kind words. I imagine as we all age, we will be in these situations more often than not. And, of course, one of these days...... no one can say when..... we will each be the one whose hand is being held. All I know is that we are not promised a tomorrow....so live today as if it is your last. I have not done that by any means, ever, in fact I am one of the worst for worrying about things I cannot change, but sometimes things happen to put life in perspective for you. This is a wonderful place, this KT, to come and share and ask for advice, and for prayer and good thoughts. And also to pass on encouragement to our 'cyber' friends as they need it. Bless you all!

Ugh...just returned from my regular vets' in order to get Sasha's files and ultrasounds, etc. for Wednesday's appt. with the oncologist. I reviewed my decision with my primary vet to go to a specialist. They still feel that surgery or euthanasia are the two options I am faced with. I reviewed the second set of ultrasounds with my vet. She noted that there appears to be a small tumor on a lymph node as well in addition to the large one on her intestines. Not good news at all. I'll tell you, I'm glad they can read those ultrasound pics, they seem pretty confusing to me. The kidneys look like tumors to me.... After leaving my vet, I'm feeling less sure about the specialist route now. I'm starting to feel like I'm fighting a losing battle. I am normally a very decisive person and feel like every hour I change my mind as to what to do for my cat. What I am struggling with is I don't want to put her through the ordeal of surgery--- only to then euthanize her. She's lost half her body weight in 3.5 weeks. I'd like to get a prognosis without having to have surgery. Is this even possible? My vet did 3 aspirations -- all showed necropic tissue which leaves the results indeterminant. Symptomatically, based on location of the tumor, lymphoma is the best guess. My vet feels that surgery is the only option left for treatment. Also, this specialist I have the appt. with on Wed. is the specialist my vet has been consulting with and who would perform the surgery. Ironically, last night and this morning, Sasha decided to begin eating again on her own. I got half a can of A/D into her. While it felt like a small victory, I have to remind myself that food will not cure her. I'm really struggling with this and feel more confused than ever.

Jamie, I whole heartily empathize with you. I almost didn't reply to your post, but I kept coming back, knowing that I needed to. My DH lost his battle against cancer on December 16th., 30 years ago this coming Sunday. He was 62. I had not made any preparations for Christmas at that time. Three days before Christmas I picked up my 2 grandchildren and we put up the tree and went Christmas shopping. I some how knew that if I didn't have Christmas that year I would never have Christmas again, and that was not fair to my family. My neighbor called when she saw the tree lights on, and told me that I had just made her Christmas. We did have a Christmas, but no, it was not as usual. We continue on, as he would have wanted us to. DD and I talked this morning about our plans for this year. Those two Grands are now grown and have jobs and in-laws that have to be worked into my schedule, or mine into theirs. It is still very hard, I'm tearing up as I type, but I wish for you strength as you move on, knowing that we are not in control of these things, but moving on with memories that never die. I hope you and Lance will be able to celebrate Christmas this year and many more years to come. Blessings, Sue

cherryfizz (Anne?) sorry to hear about your niece. Will she be going to Princess Margaret Hospital for the treatment? Some years ago I was diagnosed with multiple thyroid nodules, which they keep a watch on, but so far, they have never grown larger, so it's thought that I may have developed them many years ago. I don't know if you recall, but we've spoken in the past, and I've mentioned that I grew up in Windsor and moved to Toronto after college. Anyway, my doctor here discovered my nodules years ago, while feeling my neck during my annual physical. She has been sending me to get my nodules scanned over the years, to check for any growth. Interesting thing...one year when I was getting scans, the radiologist mentioned that since I had several, which had never changed in size, they would probably never turn malignant. But then she happened to mention, "Windsor Ont. has the highest rate of thyroid cancer in North America, so at least you live here." I was shocked and told her that I spent my first 19 years living there. I asked my own dr. if she had ever heard about that, and she said no. I have no idea where the radiologist got her information, because I've never seen anything written to confirm that.

Sorry to hear that. I am 72 and have decided on no treatment if I am diagnosed with serious cancer. I do not want to live as long as my husband and my Mom.

Woody certainly has ours. DH has all the same problems minus the cancer. Poor Woody certainly didn't need another problem.

Sorry to hear anyone has this illness! I volunteered in a cancer facility and they are wonderful to the patients and technology has come a long way...you and your brother are in my thoughts for a good report and the promise of hope that things will be worry free again for you all.

This has got to be so hard on you and your brother. I just am at a loss for words for you.

In addition to all of the problems that Woody's coping with ... now this extra trouble comes along!

I am sorry that you have this extra worry ... and send my good thoughts and hopes, along with some prayers.

Perhaps, with all of the research and discoveries that have been made, some will be helpful to him in this, his hour of need.

I hope that Woody may feel a strong sense of peace in his heart, trusting that he will do well, whatever the result .. and that you do, as well.

I hope that it does not cause him substantial suffering, and that they can manage whatever hurtful things come to him.

It seems to me that there will be more of of this terrible cancer, due to increases in pollutants, and they are discovering new and exotic chemicals almost every day ... and without doubt some will be human unfriendly.

Eva..I am so sorry and Woody is in my Prayers. Cancer is a demon to be reckoned with, that's for sure, but I believe with Prayer and the treatments available today..it can be beat!!

It really is a horrid disease. I will say though that my Aunt had end-stage Ovarian CA in her 80s, and lived to late 90s. She didn't tell anyone of symptoms - we found out when it was technically too late to do anything. She didn't die from the CA.

Sending good thoughts for your family, and prayers that your brother will get through this in a good way.
