What on earth were they thinking? Water Walking Balls?

I hadn't even heard of water walking balls until I received this alert from Consumer Reports. I could easily see where kids would find it fun, even adults for that matter.

But they are air tight and there's no exit from the inside - you need someone outside to unzip the bubble. I'm surprised that they're even selling these to consumers.

Here is a link that might be useful: water walking balls

Next? Why they'll decide to drop them off a cliff to see how high they'll bounce.

Thinking about the EarthTainer
Q
Comments (1)
I have done OK with gardening in pots over the past few years and am excited to try out EarthTainers this year to improve yield and quality. My first priority are tomatoes, but I have a number of other crops also ready to go. I have some questions/thoughts for the other enthusiasts out there, so thanks in advance for your help/info! 1) In ver 3.1 of the EarthTainer build, I like the idea of the pea fencing but I was unclear how many of the pea fences actually need to be purchased to make a single EarthTainer. Could someone please clarify? If I were to purchase from Gurneys, for example, how many items would I need (knowing that 1 item=2 sections) for each 'Tainer? That's correct. Gurney's has a funny way of identifying something as an "Offer". To make the base cage and the extension cage, you need 2 sections per EarthTainer, which equates to one "Offer". Be sure to use the 50% off coupon at the link referenced in the Guide. 2) Has anyone integrated compost or other more natural nutrient mixtures instead of the chem fertilizers into the grow medium? I would avoid adding in Compost, as this will cut down on the necessary aeration of the roots. Stick with the 3:2:1 Combo Mix recommended in the Guide, as well as you will get suggestions re: Al's 5:1:1 Mix. 3) I don't recall any discussion about rotating the EarthTainers. In the past I have turned my pots from time to time so that the plant grows healthy on all sides. Is this necessary or feasible with the EarthTainer? Yep, Werever possible, I rotate the 'Tainers in the Summer at 6 week intervals. It's called: "The 'Tainer Tango"!!! 4) If I need to put the 'Tainers on a concrete slab, any thoughts about what type of insulation would be best to reduce the heat-transfer during the peak summer months? Along these lines, has anyone measured water and/or growth medium temp throughout the season? Use a piece of wood or other material to provide an amount of isolation from the concrete. The dual wall in the new design acts somewhat like a Thermos Bottle, which will help. 5) Has anyone observed mineral buildup or nutrient diffusion into the water reservoir from the grow medium? (I may check this myself during the season as part of my experimentation.) Yep. That is why I recommend the Clearex treatment found on the last page of the Guide. 6) I believe 2 tomato plants/'Tainer are the recommendation, but what happens with more or less plants? What other crops have been tried successfully, and how do the number of plants/'Tainer change? In addition to tomatoes, I've grown Eggplant, cukes, corn, Snow Peas, Peppers, carrots, - - just about anything does well in them. Raybo

Blaze and I were 'just a walking in the rain'
Q

LOL, I love how you told what Blaze was thinking. BeeBee hates his feet wet even and looks at me like 'well, can't you DO something about this?' I hope you dried out all cozy at home after the ordeal. I'm so sorry about the rain in OK. I wish yours would come to us in the southeast who are in drought! We did have a sudden thunderstorm the other day that kicked up when I was checking out shopping. I pulled my car up really close to the store to try not to get so wet. The manager came and yelled at me for blocking the handicapped ramp [believe me nobody was gonna wheel up right then in that downpour]. He didn't have any employees who were out there already [playing ball] help me load... just kept asking when I could move it. Umbrellas all around!

What were you thinking?
Q

Oh, I have no doubt the next owner of my property will be cursing me endlessly :-) When we moved in there were two enormous Doug firs in the back and a diseased purple leaf plum and blue spruce in the front. Aside from a venerable tree-form lilac, that was it (and a nasty, upright juniper pseudo-hedge that was one of the first things to disappear). All that is left of the original planting is one magnificent Doug fir. But there are some 2 dozen other trees (not counting the dwarf conifers), gosh knows how many shrubs, 43 (at last count) clematis and other vines and a large and varying assortment of perennials, groundcovers and grasses. All on a rather conservatively sized urban lot. In no way could this ever be considered a low maintenance garden :-) I'm sure they'll be saying "what WAS she thinking" every day!

Stupid design things--what were they thinking?
Q

Human size cut out posters (standing upright) doing all sorts of activities or lined down a hall. They bother me for some reason. And is it just here.....but when did walking on the right to shop at malls (akin to driving) become a norm? Tis' a standard here. Haven't shopped at a mall for years and people sure know how to tell you where they want you to be. For some reason I do right side cart in grocery stores, from osmosis or all those electric carts. TPMs....has anyone notice they look like someone's "bare" rear end? Who designs these things? New car and the thing won't go off. What good does this do? Mechanic told me this happens with some cars and it is a law now to have them. Lazy mechanics are my stupid design things...animate or inanimate. Although the design logo is the same, MINI has had this for years and can be turned off manually when tires are changed, adjusted, etc. I can do it if they can't, an odd routine. But again, a lazy mechanic is going to avoid it and spend the time talking about how it is fine. They must have changed the build from original design, or we are getting junk ones. Perhaps there is a way for the user to manually turn it off....and off to search. This isn't a design thing. I cringe when looking for something in a store, then asking the clerk for information and they answer "I don't know". Can't count the times I've wanted to tell them to find someone who does know or to learn something and find out. Every color possible on appliances, no need to put any holiday lights in the kitchen. Just turn the lights out and everything else on. Same with your car at night. Dazzling!

"I'm surprised that they're even selling these to consumers. "

Wow!
I was not aware that the average consumer can buy these.
I have only seen them used commercially.

It takes several people to zip you in & inflate you, it's not like you can do it all by yourself.

So now, because one child was left unattended by the people who put him/her in there, we gotta have a warning....

Did anyone watch the last episode of "Weeds"? Syrus, the older son was modeling for some agency and they sent him on a job where he was to enter an art exhibit (I think) walking in one of these water balls! He almost suffocated because no one realized he couldn't breathe and just laughed at him. Finally Andy grabbed a sharp object and punctured the thing. It was used as comedy in the show, but wow what a law suite waiting to happen. Didn't know you buy them either.

When I first began reading, I began to wonder, "If there's no opportunity to escape, from the inside, and no airholes ...

... how long does the air in there support an inmate's life?"!

This is hilarious! When exactly did we get to the point where common sense is such a foreign language to people? Now we have to protect the totally stupid. Mother Nature is totally ticked and clearly trying to thin the herd or at least toss some chlorine into the gene pool, as long as the manatees aren't using it to "exercise" before pounding down a 5000 calorie lunch!

It's unbelievable we have to put warnings on dry cleaning bags warning that they're not children's toys and shouldn't be put over babies heads. For that matter, when did we get so stupid we still need instructions on shampoo? People try to tame bears, tigers and the like and get mauled so I suppose we should tatoo warnings on all wild animals. People go on "adventures" in the mountains in the middle of the winter, start an avalanche then we have to jeopardize other peoples lives to save the stupid. Or we're expected to feel sorry for people who send their life savings to Nigerian Generals, televangelists and the like because they can't tell a scam.

I don't understand it, but I'm not fluent in gullible and idiot languages, at least not anymore.

The first thing that comes to my mind when viewing those balls is the bacteria and possible viruses in them. Nothing like having several people crawling around fully clothed, sneezes and coughing (just plain breathing) etc. In a sealed plastic bag. Next.

stupid is as stupid does is a very fitting statement here.

These should never have been created so there should not need to be any warning! What part of NO AIR do people not understand? Only so much oxygen starts out in the thing, you breathe it up and breathe out carbon dioxide, then you collapse because you NEED oxygen to live. Yet there are idiots out there who no doubt will jump on in.

we may be seeing some of the next Darwin award winners ...

I agree with Wildchild about the health implications.
