Baby pic...sort of

At least one of the baby bluebirds has started sticking its head up to the hole. We don't really know when they hatched--they've been peeping 3-4 days when they get fed--so we haven't interacted with them. Anyone know how about how old they are when they start "peeping" and start showing themselves like this?

I could tell more by looking at its feathers. Usually when they start looking out like that, they're getting ready to fledge/fly the coop, within a couple of days. Do you know when the eggs were laid?

I do not mean to come across as an expert. Can only speak of my experiences and that of what others have shared with me. If they are in there for only a short time, it should not be a problem as long as your lights are the type that do not create a lot of heat. The misting is kind of a question. The misting probably not essential at this point. Once in a while probably not bad, will help reduce condition in which spider mites dislike. I would not mist when they go under the lights. Mine are under lights with reflective material on three sides and top. The room is kept at about 60-65 F. I feel that I am always experimenting as we grow these in such a different environment than where they grow naturally or even in places such as Australia, Thailand, Arizona. Wow thanks everyone for helping out. I have looked at the pics of MB/JC as well as KvD on HMF and gosh they sure do look alot alike. Lots of the Marchesa Boccella pics show sort of a button in the centre with the petals turned inward and I haven't seen that on mine. Most of the blooms on mine have the "swirled" centre and the 2 tone pink with the darker centre. One thing I don't see demonstrated very well in photo's of either rose is, on mine the buds are very round and full with a dimple on the top. There are a few photo's here and there but not consistently. The sepals on mine are very long and kind of fringed. Either way, at least it is nice to know what it is. Since it's not KvD now that brings up a few questions. I suspect Marchesa Boccella won't be as hardy as KvD? Looks like it might be smaller overall, if it makes it through winter I may have to look at moving it closer to the front. Although whatever it is I really do love it and having an encore of those lovely blooms would be wonderful. Cathy

What a a well thought out landscape and lovely collection of plants. I so love your sidewalk planting - so much more interesting than a lawn. I think your Sasaella will be fine, so many plants are wrongly zoned anyway. I grow Sasaella albostriata and it is perfectly hardy for me. From the looks of the perennial plants you are growing, there really doesn't seem to be any zone difference at all between Zone 5 and Zone 3.

We don't know, Leslie. We know the adults were feeding for at least 3-4 days before the July 4 holiday. We wanted to look in on them about then, but we got busy and didn't. Then I read not to mess with them after about 13 days--so we've done nothing but watch from afar.

Drats...I'm going to be out of town all next week. I was afraid I would miss the BIG DAY when they left. I'll hold out hope for tomorrow or maybe Monday morning so that I can watch.

Will they fly out and then go back in or do they just fly off into the trees and stay elsewhere?

Once they leave the box, they don't go back in. Sometimes if they've fledged to soon, and can't flutter to a bush or low tree, you can throw a towel over them, pick them up and put them back in the nestbox. But you have to put a temporary hole reducer on it so they can't get out for another couple of days. The parents can still feed them though, through the hole. This gives them time to gain the extra strength to make it to safety. Then after a couple of days take it off.
I'd say they're at least 12 days old then, and they fledge at 16-21 days old.
