about engagement/wedding rings

My engagement and wedding ring is welded together. Had to take it off after the Oklahoma cross state ride, as I had a rash under it.

Now, getting ready to put it back on, but YIKES, which way does it go?

Engagement ring first, or last?

I always heard, wedding ring first, closer to the heart, then the engagement ring. I prefer to wear my engagement ring on my roght hand.

I have. Similar story to sueb's. We were in upheaval from remodeling, and one day, no rings. I had only gone to a gas station that day. (Bad habit of tucking them in coin purse, where I never kept coins, and thought maybe, just maybe, they fell out when I paid.) For over a month I looked everywhere in the house, the car, went back to the gas station several times. No rings. :( Thankfully, I had insured them separately. I went back to the same jewelry store that made them. Same little old Russian man was still there making jewelry. :) He remembered mine from a photo (I had sketched the originals for him). Mine have baguettes on top half of both engagement & wedding band, with a marquis on engagement. Only thing I changed was I opted for white gold. Prefer that, I rarely wear other jewelry, but when I do it's silver. I do wear my pre & post marriage Christmas & Birthday diamond studs daily, they are set in white gold. Back when we got married very little was available or displayed in white gold or platinum. And the marquis is a bit larger, but that was based on what they had in the store, closest to what I had before. (Not a big rock kind of gal.) They don't match DHs gold band, and will never be the same as the ones placed on my finger. I am happy to have them tho, and if not for insuring them I would be up the proverbial creek!

We did it. Ring worth just over 5k. Rider on our homeowner's insurance. Don't have a clue as to what it is now, but 8 years ago, it was an extra 50 bucks a year. I would say entirely worth it too. My setting snapped at the base about three years ago. I was frantic looking for the stone. Finally gave up. Ultimately found it in the bottom of my daughter's jammie drawer. Total luck. We were just about to file a claim... So yes, do it. I wouldn't do separate insurance. That's got to be more expensive than a rider, but I would research it to be sure.

We went together to get my set. Very simple brushed silver band with a VERY small solitaire diamond. $103.00 and took most everything my DH had at the time! I got his on our first anniversary , as it took me that long to save for it. When you are 16 and 18 years old money didn't come easy. My DH had to stop wearing his years ago due to it catching on something and nearly tore his finger off. We thought we had misplaced it for years and both looked time and time again thru the years for it. Last week my DH mentioned that now that he is retired he would love to have his ring. So I looked for the hundredth time in my jewelry box and there it was! I was stunned that it was there all along and neither of us could find it. Being my 60th birthday was in a few days I knew the best gift I could ever get would be the look in my DH's eyes when I gave it to him along with a new one as the first was so badly worn and split. As we went to dinner for my birthday I had him stop the car as I had something I just had to show him. He was as stunned as I and we shared many tears together! It truly was the most wonderful birthday ever!

I don't care if the world knows I'm married, although I don't have a problem with it either. But I would love to tell the world how lucky I feel to have found such a great loving relationship! I'm not super caught-up in the symbolism of a ring, but I don't have a problem with it either. I like symbolism if I get to make it my own. That's what I'm kind-of looking for in a ring, something that speaks to both of us. SO is really the sticking point sometimes. He is very picky, very particular, very negative about a lot of things. He searches and searches for just the right thing to purchase. Drives me nuts sometimes. On the one hand. On the other hand . . . he found me!!! Edited to add that I had a serious talk with SO about the fact that I loved the hand crafted ring with the gold leaves, loved the natural style of it and could see myself wearing it all the time. He had to admit that he was conservative and traditional and just didn't like it. He said that he would be fine with my getting it if I liked it, but I said, no, we can find something we both like. So one down, couple more to go . . .

Mine is just two different pieces from sets that were my grandmothers..the "wedding" ring is a thin band from a set where the engagement portion is a large emerald cut ruby(this just sits in my jewelry tin)..and the "larger center stone" piece is from an anniversary band. I had them resized years ago and welded together as the small wedding band was close to wearing in two for the first 5 or 6 years I wore them an the 30 plus my grandmother did.

Now I've seen people wear the engagement on the inside because it was "on her finger" when the band was placed on...

I think engagement rings look funny with the wedding ring is on top. The wedding band is put on the bare finger at the ceremony, then the bride can put the engagement ring on top of that.

Traditionally the wedding band goes on first, then the engagement ring. This does have a practical reason too - many women don't wear their engagement rings every day so this way they can remove it without removing the wedding band. They might take if off when doing chores, gardening, going to the beach, wearing gloves, caring for a baby etc.
