I have seen the Good Sam Club advertised in RV magazines. They do roadside assistance and I don't know what else.

When we bought our motor home in March we purchased an extended warranty at the same time. It covers everything bumper to bumper except for tires and a couple other little things. Well worth the money down the road as your RV gets older.

We also belong to Good Sam and have their emergency roadside assistance. They have been great about coming out and changing tires or having a rig towed. We used it several times with the 5th wheel and truck. There is no limit as to how many times a year it can be used.

Through Good Sam you also are able to buy things in Camping World at a discount. It is amazing how many things you HAVE to have.

Have fun outfitting your RV with all the kitchen, bedroom and bath things that you will need. We have ours set up so that we only have to put in our meds and perishable food items to be ready to hit the road.

We just came back from a trip all around the Northwest for a month and it was wonderful. I am ready to head out again but my DH is a homebody and has to come home every month to six weeks.

Insurance, a simple rv policy. If you do add contents like electronics it doesn't cost much to add contents to the policy. Some come with a $1,000 worth of coverage anyway. See if you can find something with the option to suspend coverage. While it's sitting for long periods of time you can get away with collision (if its parked somewhere that it can be hit) and or comprehensive for fire, theft, hail, wind damage. You only need liability while your driving it.

We have ours on our car/home policy, but have checked out Good Sam's insurance. Right now, DH is happy with it the way it is, but I kind of think Good Sam's got the better insurance. I don't know how it compares to our policy, as he handles that, but they deal almost exclusively with RV's. Our's doesn't. Good Sam is also good for roadside assistance. Also, AAA now has RV coverage, which is what we have right now. Haven't had to use it, so don't know how good it will be. As for contents insurance, it should all be in one policy. NOT seperate. It's just like insuring a house.

We have an extended warrenty on ours. But, we didn't purchase it imediately. Check with your dealer. You should have a certain amt of time to make the decision to purchase it. As we had some major issues with ours and had to be towed a few times under original warrenty, we got the extended warrenty. To us, it was worth the peace of mind.

Tire warrenty is not part of reg. warrenty. It's seperate, just like for your car.

You can check out the rv forums for lots of info to help answer your questions. Good Sam, Escapee's (which we are members of and are great), Family Motor Coach Assoc., are a few. Google RV Forums for more suggestions. That's what DH did. Also, check out Passport America for discount campgrounds! We are only affiliated as members, not part of the company. It saves about 1/2 price! We have found that about 2 nights pays for our membership for the year. There are certain restrictions that apply to different campgrounds as to how many nights, weekends or not, ect.

I'm not pushing any of these sites or membership, just giving suggestions of things we've looked into and have worked for us.

Where are the RV forums? I did a search and I got this thread. Do NOT like this new layout. It's NOT user-friendly at all! :(

On the left of the index page there are links to Home Forums, Garden Forums and More Forums. These are to the lists of existing forums, though many have no current activity, which was true even before the move. There are forums for cars, motorcycles and hunting/fishing, but not RV-ing. There's a camping forum under Nature in More Forums but it seems moribund.

Ruthie, have you checked with your regular insurance agent? Also, there might be good info at AAA, as well as Good Sam. Good Sam has forums for all kinds of insurance questions, though, because they sell insurance themselves, make sure you know who's giving which answers about what. The maker of your RV probably has an owners' forum, too, where people might have particular insight into what works best for your particular rig. There are differences between driven and towed RVs, as well as class A and class C motorhomes. Add to that that the laws are different in every state, and speaking to a specialist starts to make more sense than anything, though the forums are a good way to start learning about it.

Extended service is a weird animal. It usually doesn't make financial sense, but occasionally it does. A lot depends on the exclusions. For an RV, it would also depend on if you can easily get a direct payout to whatever bumpkin is getting you back on the road. For the convenience, if you could just charge it to them and be on your way, it might be worth it. Most that I know about, however, run like regular auto policies, and don't cover labor or incidental parts, plus they require a lot of back and forthing to get the payment approved, etc. Think too about when it kicks in. If you already have a five year warranty, be sure that you really will be in this same RV in five years. Life stages change on average ever seven years. Having enough cash available on a credit/debit card could be a lot easier. Ease and peace of mind could mean more to you.

Thanks, Snidely. I usually do notice that, but it's one of those days. It's been a long time since we've done wheeled travel, and I've been researching a lot lately.

The extended tire hazard is probably not worth it. If you mount a new set of tires from most of the well known tire companies, a limited warranty comes with it and includes road hazard. The usual warranty is based on age and tire wear. The warranty expires after a certain age.

What is more critical on a large rig is getting help to mount the spare and getting it in a timely fashion. Check the service before you buy. For example, AAA has been pretty good to members of my family, but my father-in-law discovered that coverage can be spotty in certain locations and situations. For example, on one cold winter night, he blew a tire. The dispatcher put him in contact with the nearest service person, but apparently, that person wanted to close up, go home, and watch TV, so he passes my FIL to another service center that was miles away. When FIL called the distant center, he got the go-around that he was out of their area. It took a couple more call to verify that they were the only available service, so they reluctantly came out. FIL was delayed 4 or 5 hours with the temperature dropping.

Another example: Suppose your are traveling across a remote location, say mid-Nevada and you have a problem. The nearest town is 100 miles away. Will the service you purchased cover that location?
