Miele Double Oven Master Chef Owners, question for you.

This is the dumbest question I think I may have ever asked. So dumb, I'm not even putting the question in the title of the thread!

Let's say you have the oven on, how do you make the light go on without opening the door? Because that is the only way I can figure out how to do it!

I'm such a ding dong. Can you help?

There's a general setting for the oven light. Off after one minute or on during use.

It's annoying, I agree. Would be nice to make it do what we want, not what they want.

Wow. Thanks. I can't believe there really is no "light" button. Sure seems odd in an oven like this. But hey, this is the same oven that I had to go back and buy a $40 grease filter cover for the fan in order to use the rotisserie that came with the oven. So maybe it does make sense....

I don't know that the Chef series have no rotisseries - the features about the oven on the miele page substantiates CJ's observation that it has none. While I think a rotisserie's great and grew up with my Mum putting out wonderful things on one that she had, I'm now a vegetarian and can't find that much to do on one, so a roti is a no-op for me. So, I'm ambivalent about that. I also don't know if it has the probe - that would be a sorry loss although there are certainly enough other probe thermometers about. Personally, I truly despise the oven interface on the MasterChef ovens - even without ever going into the MasterChef programming. The ghastly nested menus are *not* a good design - much too fiddly if you ask me. Too much like using a Microsoft application. I dislike them more and more every time I need to use one - and that's both: the Masterchef interface as well as Microsoft apps. ;-) The interface was wonderful on the Novotronics and I'm thinking that these Chef series ovens may be similar. A good thing. MonaW, you quote your appliance man a bit too much. There is almost daily evidence here that repairmen spout much nonsense on a regular basis. And while I'm no fan of self-cleaning myself, Miele isn't selling a non-self-cleaning oven in the US any longer (I know, I was looking for one earlier last year and was hunting out a non-SC one). You'd be hard put to find one.

The resurrection of this thread is perfect timing. I'm planning on a six burner 36 inch Culinarian range, and had been up in the air about an additional oven. DW and I were in an appliance store in Tampa yesterday, and since we don't do a tremendous amount of baking, the Miele Speed Oven and a warming drawer seem to be a good complement for us to the large gas oven of the range (whether an additional full size wall oven, in addition or instead of the Speed Oven, would be better or resale purposes at some point down the road is another matter). In comparing the two, my bride much preferred the more conventional controls of the Chef series SO. Even though she's still likely to want a dedicated microwave oven (doesn't trust that the SO will do that and hold up over time), she didn't like having to push the Master Chef menu buttons through about three levels to get to the point where she could enter the numbers for a straight microwave task. OTOH, the combination of different modes one can use is so staggering to an untutored barbarian such as me that I have to wonder whether the Master Chef would ultimately show me how to get that much more value/use from the SO. For example, DW likes to take a frozen filet of salmon and nuke it. To me, it's hot and edible, but that's about all I can say for it. I can imagine the Master Chef first defrosting, then roasting that same block of salmon in a much more appealing fashion than straight nuking. I just wonder how many pieces of fish I'd ruin if experimenting with the Chef oven before breaking the code for times and modes of cooking. :-) I grill 90% of the fish I prepare (gas grill or over hardwood charcoal on the back porch), so the oven roasting would definitely be a new experience for me.

Thank you so much, rych! Since I will not have a range oven, these will become my primary ovens, so I think that I will go with the XXL. But the silly question that I have is, would people expect me to have a 30" oven when I sell the house years later? I know, I should just get what I want and need, rather than the resale needs, but it is on my mind... BTW, how do you like the plumbed in version? If you were to do it all over again, would you still go with the plumbed in version, rather than the non-plumbed version? Thanks for pointing out that about the Speed Oven.... the probe is probably not that important to me. The fancy one has the Master Chef menu which looks nice but I don't think that I will use it much either.... for a difference of CAD$1500 I am wondering if I should go with the cheaper one.... hmm..... BTW, how do you like the induction range? If I am not incorrect, Miele's induction range does not have the bridging function - does that matter at all? How do you like the Miele induction system overall? Thank you again!

Antss is correct. I have a Miele speedcook and it functions superbly for my needs. It does have a one minute button on the front panel. It is really easy to get used to. Start everything out at 30 seconds and see how it goes. I put bacon in there to reheat at 1min and there were pieces of paper left in the microwave. 20 secs and it was perfect! The speedcook function works really quickly. The miele manual has some guides but it still takes some getting used to. I used it to bake bread the other day and it was wonderful. I am going to order an extra swizzle stick (the stick you put in liquids to heat it up) because I can never find mine when I am looking for it. They run about $4. The only thing that concerns me is the glass tray that is used in the oven. I worry that it will break easily. So far, it has proved much tougher than I expected. I have used a Le Creuset pan and several porcelain pans full of food without issue. Good luck!

The grease filter cover should come with the oven -- or they should have sent it to you under waranty. Bizarro.

It has its quirks most definitely. Another one is that to lower an oven temperature setting while it's running, the oven must be turned off and turned back on to be reset at the lower temperature.

Additionally, the timer goes to 59 minutes 59 seconds only.

However, auto roast, intensive and the rotisserie are worth the price of admission IMO. Also being able to place food directly on the racks and having the drip pan is such a no-brainer. And the probe is my sous-chef.

There is a nice "Big Circle" labeled "Oven Light" on the Elux.
Tap the circle, the oven light comes on, tap it again and it goes off. The light also comes on when you open the oven door.

Temps can be set anywhere, anytime, up down and all around, and it "actually comes to the temp you set it to---we see quite a few posts about a number of Mieles that never get to set temp.

We've seen posts about how much folks love the "Perfect Turkey" probe for the Elux, (Of course the meat probe works for other meats too).

Gary, she's not buying anything. She already owns it. Those of us who have Miele ovens and don't have issues are entitled to like them and say nice things. We are, of course, happy for you that you have pluperfect appliances and paid less. Different strokes.

On the single oven if you touch the keypad, the oven light goes on without opening the door.

Daveliv, you might be on to something because it did come on once by accident, maybe that's what I did.....

And yes, I called about the grease filter. They haven't been including them for a few years. Stupid since in the directions it says to insert it.....took me a long time to realize I DID NOT HAVE ONE!

That was kind of a "psycological Prompt" that I did Bee.
Knowing how some folks love their Miele ovens, I figured If I post the Elux can do it, then I thought it likely that somebody would say, "And so can the Miele"!

Close enough, You thinks?, You just touch the panel, even I could handle that, I hope you, Rococo girl,and the rest that have the ovens, continue to be served well by them.

Bee - My husband really likes the Miele double ovens...thinking of ordering one -- sounds like you like yours? I have read many garden web review from people with trouble on temperature. My husband is not deterred.... Not sure how widespread the issues are... Any advice please? Thank you!

I made sure that mine were given the software update before I bought them. (Supposedly that had something to do with the temperature issue). They were floor models. They called Miele and took care of all of it for me. So far so good.
