DH and I would appreciate you prayers.

Yep, I am getting older and need to change some of my life styles. It is time for me to quit driving, after driving for 63 years. Haven't driven much in a long time anyway. My license is due to expire in a few weeks. Now what do you use for ID if you don't have a drivers license??

While I am going on, DH and I can use your prayers. WE found out he has advanced cancer and he is having a lot of pain. Dr has started him on the shots. Guess they are to slow it down.

I'm so sorry Velleen. What terrible news about your DH. I hope the treatment works for him.

As for an ID, I think you can get one to replace your driver's license. Give the DMV a call, they can help you.

Oh, Velleen, I'm so sorry to hear about Vince. My prayers are certainly with you for his comfort and recovery.

Also, I know it's got to be hard to give up the ability/opportunity to drive yourself somewhere if you want to go. I applaud you for recognizing that it needs to be done, rather than taking unnecessary risks. I'm thinking that here in KS, the driver's license bureau can generate an ID card for you ... I don't know where I heard that tho. Possibly check with the DL bureau in your state?

You did great! You shoulda called me, I would've come to do it for you. And for as little as a garden tour. You're no wimp. A wimp is defined as a weak, cowardly, or ineffectual person. You were none of the above. You held in there, were determined to do it, and very effectual at getting those bulbs in. Great job!

My shoulders are quite sore, I suppose from doing a handstand on the rim of the bath tub and then lowering myself to the floor. She has a woman come in each Thursday that does her laundry and cleaning around the house. I was surprised when I went in the upstairs bathroom, though it would be dusty since the neighbor hasn't been up there in years. Guess the cleaning woman takes care of it. Home health care comes in and sees that she gets bathed and she recieves noon meals from the senior center. The same woman does her grocery shopping. I saw dozens of cans of soups lined up on the kitchen counter, obviously she would not be able to reach them if they were put away. Leone and I have decided we are going to give her a Christmas present, a new lock for her front door. I will install it and it can be as secure as she wants but, we are going to have a key and I will disable the push lock on the outer storm door so we can get to the front door if necessary. We aren't going to accept any arguement concerning this gift. It will be done. I already mow her lawn, keep her sidewalks and drive clean of snow and thats O.K., I don't mind doing it but crawling in upstairs windows has to stop. Haven't decided whether or not to call her son but believe I will at least write him. She is only 79 but has always hated the outdoors and I don't ever remember her being out except to go between house and car.

If it were me, I think I'd do the quilt w/o the info. and give it. But I also think it would be fine if you didn't do a quilt. The feeling of 'obligation' does take the joy out of it while a 'gift' makes the heart light. Someone on this forum several years ago shared a piece of advice that has made a lot of sense to me. Giving a gift is about the recipient - if they would appreciate something hand-made, then use your skill, time and resources to make them a gift. If they would only appreciate something store-bought, don't waste your time, effort and resources on making something, purchase something within your budget for them. They are happy and you have not squandered your time. I don't think you're cranky - you just don't want your efforts to be wasted, which is wise. Part of having a skill is having the say on how you use it and for who. My daughter is growing as an artist and has done a few portraits for people of their children. Another person accosted her and demanded a portrait be done. My daughter shared what her charges were (I was so proud of her that she stood up for herself - I think I would have just agreed to do the drawing!) The person was taken back and asked her what business she had charging for a portrait when she was an amateur. My daughter stood her ground and said that actually her price was quite low for a portrait. We should have the wisdom to share our work with those who will appreciate it, and we should decide if we want to give it as a gift, or if we want to charge a respectable price for it.

I loved Marbree! Very nice win! I won a NO ID in the silent auction and two that I bid on. The first one was a dwarf hybrid musk? Jet Spray. It looked and sounded delightful in the PowerPoint presentation. I got it for only $10! Does anyone know bout Jet Spray? There are no blooms on it right now. The second bid is a brand new intro by John Bagnasco. A darling raspberry pink polyantha with tiny blooms. It has an Heirloom roses tag, so I assume it will be released next year. I did pay a bit more for Kendyl Marie. Here’s her picture. Opps, upside down! She’s very pretty and I think those tiny blooms will be wonderful in the vase. There were many great roses that either I didn’t have the space for, or were out of my price range. One thing I did learn, is that it doesn’t do any good to place a bunch of low bids early in the silent auction. Many went for very reasonable prices, but they were placed the last few minutes of the silent auction. I just left my bids stand and only won one rose in the silent auction. I know for next time, but I really didn’t “need” anything. I just wanted:) I arrived on Sunday just as the silent auction closed, and apparently I should have arrived about 15 minutes earlier. That’s ok, less holes to dig. Here’s a few rose pictures from the auction. Great Speckled Bird, below.I would have liked Pink Intuition. This one went a little too high for me in the live auction, while Red Intuition went for about $20. Wish I liked reds! You can still go to the DVR to get an ID, it just want indicate driving.

I don't know about any other states, but New York offers a "Non-driver ID". It looks almost like a drivers license. Good for you, giving up driving. My 85 YO mother no longer drives, she hasn't in about 15 years, but keeps her license just for identification purposes.

I think you can get another I.D. from the DMV as everyone above already mentioned.

In most all states you can go to the DMV and get just a picture ID.Good luck to you both.

I have nothing more to add about information for your ID question. My sister, who lived in Tennessee, had an ID from DMV that looked just like a driver's license, but it had " for identification only ".

Well, Velleen, if you don't have to drive, now you don't have to watch out for all the crazy drivers! :O)
I'm so sorry about your husband. Hopefully the shots will help. Some towns have transportation for seniors. We are a small town but we have one, a small bus with a lift for those in wheelchairs. Hopefully your town has one to take you where you need to go.

I commend you for knowing when the time has come to hang up your car keys.
As others have mentioned the Drivers license bureau should be able to issue you a state ID.
As for Vince. I hope for treatment that can lessen his pain. And I am sending my best thoughts to the both of you.

My DS doesn't drive because of a medical condition but he got an official ID at the DMV.

I don't, but I can sure say a prayer for you and
your DH. I hope the meds work and keep the pain
at bay for your DH.

It is a terrible thing to watch someone you love have

Hi Velleen,
I will keep Vince in my healing prayers.

Also, my grandpa uses Huron County Transit bus for older adults to get to his dr. appts. He can't drive anymore either. He doesn't mind it at all, and I'm sure your county has one too. I forget which county you are in though.

I am so sorry to hear about Vince, hopefully the shots will work and ease his pain. Bless you for realizing that it is time to give up driving. So many older folks just won't give up their independence and often injure or kill someone.

I will keep you both in my prayers. I wish there were something I could do for you to help.

I am so sorry to hear about DH, I send my prayers. The DMV has a free screening test for older folks that can help determine if they are still safe to drive. They will provide you with a "State ID" if you do not want a Drivers License. Thank you for not driving if you don't feel safe behind the wheel. You do understand that once you give your license up you may not be able to get it back right? I only say this because I had a client that changed her mind a little to late and was highly upset she could not get hers back.

I am saddened to hear DH is pain. Can he have someone come in and give him shots at the house? It sure would be much easier for both of you. I send my prayers and hugs to both of you.
I have added a link below for you to call your local Ohio
Registrar. You can get your ID there for $8.50. I assume that you will need to make a decision by next month by your birthday to get the ID. I think it sounds like the best thing to do, especially since you don't care to drive much anymore. Just make sure you have phone numbers handy for friends and family that will help out with the driving.
Or better yet~hire a driver and become the next "Driving Miss Daisy" How fun!!!

Keep us all posted on how you two are doing. We love to hear from you, even if the news is tough.

So hopefully you can follow in her shoes she had a great life...

Velleen, we all get to that point as the years creep up on us, don't we? Giving up driving is one of the hardest I think.

I believe though if I were you I would go ahead and see if your license can be renewed. If it can be, you will still have your ID without going through any extra trouble. And there might be times when you will need it in order to help Vince.

I hope Vince's doctors can help him and the two of you can enjoy many more years together.

OHH Velleen...I'm so sorry to hear about your hubster...I hope they can find something to ease his pain and slow that monster down...

As far as driving...I can see your sadness...I'll never forget getting my license and the freedom it affords us...I would probably follow Sue's advice and go ahead and get your license if you can...you just never know when you might need it...unless you feel your just not up to driving any longer...I hope you can find someone willing to take you wherever and whenever you need to go...You're both in my thoughts...

I give you so much credit for the realization that you can no longer drive. We have so many elder in our small town and some just scare me so badly while they are driving, worried that they will hurt themselves and or others.
